Sorry, I'm going to be rude, but all this discussion on GD-EMU needing a remote is getting on my nerves, really.

*cough* *cough* Clearing my voice. *cough* *cough*

Really, I know this is a collector forum but, damnit, you play so bad that you need to change the game every five minutes, ie. the time you need to get a game over? Seriously? Am I an old fart for playing the beat out of one game at once?

My thoughts exactly Braintrash. Although, what would've been nice, is to have a menu to select on-screen, so you dont have to remember how times you have to press the "next" button in order to play the game you want. Like, if Shenmue is one of the last games on the SD-card, maybe you have to press the next-button 11 times to get it right. A menu, would be alot easier than a remote ever would be.

And said menu is in the works, according to Deunan, so I guess we will get a consensus. :)

I know it is, but the impression I got was "well" into the future, and probably not on this board revision.

Dunno for that. He said board was upgradable and basically, my impression was that he would develop it as a DC app.

    Let's take bets. ;-)

I'm not sure that there will be another board revision. He's not even sure he's going to do another run after he gets through his current list. It works fine as it is although a menu would be nice. I'm perfectly happy with mine.

If he has implemented the possibility of such an application in the board itself, it should be an easy task to just create a minimal app that sends the appropriate command to the hardware itself.

Have you intend to make this concept to others consoles like Nec CD-ROM² or Sega Saturn ? Especially CD-ROM² who has a lot of hardware issues.

    Hi,

    Since nobody answered yet... ;)

@NightbreedUK - I would imagine that remote switch should work fine from +5V power on the DC.
The remote receiver shouldn't need much power at all.

Only thing then is that you'll have to hook that up to the GDEMU, which should in theory work, but you'll have to connect the "Ground" pin on the remote receiver to "Ground" on the GDEMU.
It's very common (excuse the pun) for push-button switches to use a pull-up resistor, then they are Grounded when the switch is pressed (like PC mobo power / reset buttons).

I don't want to take responsibility for people breaking their GDEMU though (it's Duenan's product after all), but thought I'd mention that the remote idea should work OK.

Sadly, I wasn't really enjoying the GDEMU stuff after all the years of trying to get my original version running.
So, I'll be helping cydyn with parts etc., but I won't be spending as much time on it as I used to.

Personally, I think cybdyn's G1-IDE Adv board is a great idea...

Yes, you can fit a fair few games on SD card, but a 2.5" HDD seems perfect for the DC.
We should also be able to find a cheap SD to IDE adapter for it too (not sure I'd want to use SD over HDD?)

Also, one of the biggest complaints people have for any GD Emu device is the price (even before it's released).
cybdyn is trying to address that issue now by making a version with just the right components to suit the design.

(just to be clear, there was my old "GDEMU" project, then there's Duenan's GDEMU, then cybdyn's DCIO / G1-IDE Adv, then there's Mario's project. :p )

Right now, I'm testing the new Dreamshell with an 80GB IDE drive, and it's working great with quite a few games now.

A "proper" GD emu board would be the best solution for compatibility of course, and allow CDDA support.

@Dr.Wily - I have intentions of looking into a CD emu for the 3DO and maybe the Sega CD / Mega CD, and Neo Geo CD.

The 3DO should in theory be easier than most, as it uses the "Panasonic MKE" type interface.

The other consoles use a very similar chipset, but the "MKE" part of it is on the main board, which makes things more difficult.

A lot of drives use a 4-bit bus protocol with a separate command bus that will be harder to emulate. eg...

    NGCD...
    Mobo chipset -> MKE -> Chip -> 4-bit bus -> Drive.

    3DO...
Mobo chipset -> MKE ------> Chip in Drive.

Anyway, I'm definitely not promising anything (don't want to build up hopes, as I've done many times before).

I've wanted a 3DO for a long time though, and now have an NGCD, Mega CD, and a 3DO.

I often have the desire to do away with CD drives, just like with Floppy drive emulators, as none of these mechs will last forever.
Of course, it also makes it easier to carry on retro gaming using modern storage devices. :)

Price is the price, yes lots of effort/money has been spent. I'm just flat confused on what is actually being worked on! As Ozone said, there's GD-Emu, cybdyn's DCIO which may be dead, cybdyn's G1-IDE that seems to have come out of nowhere, and Mario's board.

OzOnE's GDEmu is dead decause OzOnE is not interested any more on his project
Cybdyn's DCIO is not dead but will not be a comersial product it is for development and from the development of DCIO Cybdyn will make the G1-IDE ADV.

g1ide-adv is result from mix of dcio and g1-ide.
while i'm waiting for parts, i'm working on support of CDDA on the dcio.
of course, after Duenan released his device, it doesn't make big sense to offer almost the same. if i can try make such device more simplier.

also, if price could be less for gdemu. i'll buy it and make something additional. as hw is almost same w/ dcio)))

Hopefully with USB support. I would like to put all the games I've owned(some got lost in the fire) on one HDD. And before someone cry's about piracy and not needing USB because of this; this is a 15 year old console, and I've never sold any of my games.

I want my daughter to be able to enjoy the same games I did when I was a kid, just like on my other flash carts and ODE's. That will be what separates it from Duenan's machine. Duenan's machine is great at playing single games off of SD cards; and if your looking for the ability to play a few rare obscure games, or the 3 or 4 games you owned, and don't mind getting up to press a button to switch games, this is your board. It's not about having to get up from the couch, its about a more polished product.

I am certainly willing to pay more for a USB HDD support(just make the requirement for it to be powered), this will set the board apart. This would also make it a better value in my eyes. I know its hard to have 2 products. But my money will be reserved for the ability to put over 75 games on one console without having to fart with SD card swapping(which suck to label), and having my daughter mess with a hack of a circuit board(its still a good idea, but not for me) to change games.

G1IDE-ADV is for IDE storage device: IDE HDD, SATA HDD(ide2sata bridge), and other like CF, SD (through special bridges)

Sorry I am new to this thread, but where can one order or place an order for one of these. So many pages and I am confused by what seems to be three different types.
