Using the IPS patch method, can Super FX SNES games - like, StarFox, MegaMan X2, X3, etc. - be played when the original cartridge is a game without it (e.g., Super Mario World) ?

Yeah they work fine. It's all software emulation at this point anyway when it comes to the Retron 5 so particular special chips not being in the cartridge you have inserted has no bearing on it.

Hi everyone!! First of all, I'm not a "hacker". I know nothing about how to hack a game system. So, any help will need to be explained in idiot terms.
So, I bought a Retron 5. I was just looking for a NES system. But, most of the one's in good shape weren't much cheaper than the Retron 5. And, I can play a lot more systems on the Retron 5. THen I read about the everdrive. I looked and looked. Every place that had it was sold out. So, I found a "Jack DIY". After a month of waiting for it to be shipped from China, I finally got it. I put in my Retron 5 and I got a green screen. Everywhere I've looked said it won't work on Retron 5.
The good thing is, the included SD card came loaded with games. And, from the reading I've done on here so far, there is a way to play them.
My question is, is there a way to make the "Jack DIY" work. Or is there a way to just play the games off the SD.
I'v read that retronabo had some hacks for the system. I plan on contacting him when I have access to twitter.
HTF do you hack the game system. Like I said, I'm unknowledgable of such things. So, any help would have to be a step by step for idiots.
    Thanks!!!

I'm pretty sure that Retron 5 doesn't play flash cartridges because it only dumps the ROM from an original cartridge and emulates it from there. I asked in another forum (for the SD2SNES) if the Retron 5 could just dump the "selection menu" as the main ROM and then select the game from the flash cartridge but was told that the Retron 5 couldn't access the ROMs on the SD card after that.

No, it doesn't play flash carts, I found that out the hard way. I was trying to find a way to play the games without the cart and thru an SD card. From what I've read on here, there is a way. I would just like to see a step by step for idiots instructions. That way I can at least salvage the SD card that cam with the flash cart.
Is there a way to just dump a single game from the flash cart to the retron 5. Like if you only put one game on the SD in the flash cart without a menu to choose game. Basically, put the same info that would be in a normal cartridge onto the SD in the flash cart. I know there would be a lot of wasted space on the SD. But, would it be plausable?

Any info from retronlabo?? It looked like he was on the hunt earlier in this thread.

The only way a 'flash cart' will work with the r5 is if it looks identical to the original cart on the cart edge--this is theoretically possible with the type of cart demonstrated if i rmember right by paul of inifiniteneslives on youtube where there is no 'loader' like powerpak krkzzwhateverz etc but whatever reprogrammable parts are set in such a way that the cart edge looks the same exactly(mapper/rom/ram are already set and not selected) but to my knowledge no such cart is available commercially(nor is it needed with the r5 with the ips workaround available).

check out https://www.retro5.net/ for ips maybe

Okay, well it was just a thought. I was sure it was thought of and tried already. Like I said, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff. It's why I'm here instead of trying a bunch of things out myself.

So, has anyone had any success in playing the ROMS off an SD card. I thought RetronLobo was coming up with a way.
Like I said before, an idiots guide would be helpful. I'm not completely inept on a computer. But when it comes to hacking a game system, I have no clue!!!
    Anyhoo, any success stories?

Or a way to salvage a powerpack to take out the reprogrammable parts to play directly from a single game from SD card to in a cart to the game system.
I'm just throwing out Ideas. I'm pretty much out the money I paid for the cart. But, it came with a bunch of games. I was just trying to salvage that. It would save me money on buying cartridges.
I thought someone on here was getting close or already is playing ROMS from an SD on the Retron 5. I just need a step by step.

The only way to play roms of an SD card is the IPS method or contacting Retronlabo for the hack he has been working on (I got lucky, but many others were not).
If you need a step by step on the IPS method, just look back on some of the pages here.

Pardon me. But why don't you guys use OUYA to play your roms? It does almost the same thing. Furthermore you don't need to wait for a hack. All the emulator apps are free and emulation is near perfect. And there is almost no restrictions on OUYA when you compare it to retron5. I almost feel retron5 is kinda backwards.

I second your statement. Its just a emulator machine with physical slots..period. There are better alternatives out there if you are playing from SD card.
the pervious Retron 3 used true hardware clone chips, which is compatible with EVERDRIVES and SD2NES, pricing is cheaper but only S-video out and composite.

But I'm not playing entirely from SD card, I get a special feeling seeing my original carts running their games in front of me on modern hardware.

I understand the feeling of nostalgia. :) But the problem with Retron5, it is an emulator encased in plastic shell made to fool like a console. I understand that Retron5 hooks to your modern tv via HDMI. Actually it is no different from dumping that rom and playing on a console on OUYA to your tv via HDMI.

If you are looking for 100% nostalgia feel, I suggest you get XRGB-mini. It is an expensive investment to any retro gamer. But it helps you hook up your classic consoles to your TV via HDMI.

Except that on my Retron5 I can play my real carts, as I want to, with my real controllers, as I want to, on my plasma tv in the living room all nice and neat and have my original consoles connected to a crt in the spare bedroom. As I want to.
