Yeah Can't wait for that method as well. Also I dont think cheats work using the patch method.

It's good to see progress. I really appreciate the work people have put into this. But I'm with you, I'm waiting for the day I could let my 8 year old play any classic game without having to switch carts.

Keep up the great work guys.

So can some of the shaders from retroarch be included on the Retron5?. I'd like a decent scanline shader, namely 'CRT-easymode'

right now No, but of course its possible with the hacking of the RETRON OS what runs on android. when someone decides to release a public hack to hack the OS that allows us to put roms on SD CARDS and play, of course they would be no real purpose of having a flash cart at that point, when you could dump all roms on the sd card and play. unless you wanted to of course.

Is the straight rom loader hack do-able now? I'm off work sick at the moment (awaiting surgery) so would like to have a go (instead of the IPS) method. Thanks.
(I tried to contact retronlabo on twitter but didn't hear back).
Thanks for any help (I'm ok on linux too)
    Cheers.

Hello I was looking around to see if anyone had successfully played ROMs off of the SD card in an R5 and found this thread. I know that currently some workarounds are needed to do so.

I have a few questions though.

    What architecture is the R5?
What kind of checks are in place when updating?
And is there currently any way to access the internal storage of the R5?

As I understand it the R5 is just an Android OS with a few ROM dumpers and controller adapters. Lots of possibilities though if we can completely hack it and gain access to all of it's internal features.

    Thanks in advance,
    Marcus

I think if you read backwards from where your post is you will basically be up to speed.

One could elaborate alot on some of your questions but the forum would probably rather you start a new thread for the non 'running roms' related questions.

Pm me a link if you do and I'd be happy to tell you probably more than you care to know about the console :)

I tried 57Lions's method. But I am having a few problems.
    The Roms load.
Sometimes, the colors are wrong (for example SF2 SNES is all green...)
Sometimes, the games level are mixed up (for example SMW SNES, the first level is with the ghost house... with some other ROMs, the game starts and I keep falling until it says Game Over...)
All the ROMs I tried work perfectly well (tested under Windows).

I tried a few IPS patcher. But none gives better results than another one.

Any idea what could be the problem ?

If you have problem loading ROMs.
Make sure you use the ROM version as your cartridge before patching... UK, US...

In the case of SNES games you need to remove the header from the source rom ("source" as in...matching the SAME EXACT cartridge you're making the patch for) before you even start on the patch making process. You can use something like SNESTool or SNES Rom Utility to accomplish that. Also this isn't necessarily required but it wouldn't hurt to remove the header from the end result rom/what you're patching to as well. After you do that then make your patch. If that's not the issue then I have no idea for you, make sure you're the rom matches your cartridge as well obviously I guess. As long as those 2 things are considered you should have a pretty damn close to 100% success rate...speaking from experience here.

What's happening with the Retron 5 hack?
Why isn't Retronlabo releasing his hack to the public?

    @danny

you could probably pm him here or dm him on twitter to ask. https://twitter.com/retronlabo

I think with kernel source now you could do a pretty low level hack, the best idea I could come up with was a redirect whenever file access to the rom is requested to the sd card--but I haven't tried to do anything like that or even really had time to setup a kernel compile enviornment yet

Any better ideas for a kernel patch?

edit: also tried writing an xposed module to do some logging etc but I guess the android version is not quite new enough because it just bootlooped when I tried to install the framework
