And retail takes more time off your life than tobacco.

Similar situation here, just that I'm 21 and I did some freelance IT jobs, nothing fancy...

Dunno if professional IT is that good, some dudes I know who are inside say its incredibly depressing and the money isnt worth it, which sucks 'cause I was planning to work there since highschool:-(

I been hearing some good comments about startups though.

I love my IT job. I wish it paid a bit more, but I have not been in the industry very long, so it is balanced. There are few days when I don't look forward to going into work.

The best kind of IT work is project work for sure. One major issue with IT is people think they can go in with a Certification on 50-70k a year. It's just not going to happen. Expect to work your way up and you'll be fine. I also recommend avoiding tech support to the general public. That is a wrist slitter.

Yeah I hear that a lot, specially from people that went to google expecting the so called "20% project development time" and ended up working with a phone all day instead.

On the other hand, $65k a year (no shit, they get that much) for answering a phone isnt too shabby either.

Where? I have never seen opening jobs for that price. Experienced techs get it, but not someone fresh from college.

And not general public either. That is the kind of money you'd get for ERP systems or complex tech support such as SQL or such.

Depends on who you work for really. I've heard both good and bad stories.

Its not common, true, thats why I mentioned google since they were the only one I know that did that.

They go to any ivy league college and start hiring people that looks promising. Ironic, since is just for tech support stuff, and even more if you consider that the guys who made google were from stanford.

Yeah me too, but what you gonna do? you have to keep going man...

Agreed, but in my case bad stories beat good ones 2 to 5

I have the best IT job on the planet, hands down. It didn't happen by accident though. I don't even have a technical degree (just a Japanese one). Nobody, and I mean nobody is going to make $65k a year their first year out of college in the IT industry...especially on the fucking phone. Even in an expensive city, you're probably not going to get that w/ a Masters if you don't have any work under your belt. Your degree and grades are all fine and dandy, but experience trumps all that with an iron fist. If you're competing for a job within a company, your communication skills and the effort you show will trump even experience. It did in my case, anyway.

The difference in the IT world is that you are very likely to move up the ladder quickly if you work hard. Being in a non-IT based business (fiancial, ideally) also helps. No shit, I now make multiple times what I made my first year in the industry (about 8-9 years later). Was it easy? No, I still to this day get screamed at. But, it's part of the job, and why the pay is so generous. If you fuck up, just take your ass beating and get it done next time.
