I would assume some one has posted this already, but I can't find any threads so I thought I'd throw in my two cents and see what you guys think. For the most part I'm pretty disappointed with what has been shown so far. From what I can tell the majority if not all of the sprites are from previous games, and according to one article I've read most of the music is from MM 2(which hopefully is only temporary). I also seem to remember reading that most of the bosses will be from previous games(though I can't find it now, so I might have misunderstood the article). When I first heard it was going to have a look closer to the nes games then what was featured on the snes/psx I was quite happy. But after seeing so many reused sprites, and talk of reused music I'm not sure why capcom is even bothering. Surely the costs involved with producing an 8-bit quality game are low enough that capcom would be able to get a return on their investment with even moderate sales. It's been so long since we've seen a new Mega Man game I'd hoped capcom would give 9 the deluxe treatment it deserves, but it seems they have no problem rehashing 15-20 year old sprites, throwing in some new levels and calling it a new game. I likely wouldn't be quite so upset if I hadn't been playing through mega man 1-6 over the past month, all the time thinking to myself "Capcom must have something good planned if they've waited this long to continue the series, surely they wouldn't wait 10 years only to whore out the game like they've been doing with the rest of the MM spinoffs."
If you've seen the gameplay trailers it seems decent and interesting enough. You gotta imagine they are going the budget route, targeting the retro crowd. It's not a bad thing. I know you'd love to have seen Mega Man 9 with high definition 2D graphics with lucid animation and in general amazing feat of technology, but that costs alot of money to do that. Money that often isn't well spent. We'll know when we play it, but I think it'll be alright. Afterall it'll be a downloaded game for like what, 10 or 15 bucks? Considering I find most of the downloadable games lacking depth or they are a cheap emulation of an older game, I think it should do alright. My only concern is the 360 has such a shitty D-Pad. I rather get it for PS3. So... I'll need to get a PS3.
I think it looks AMAZING and im so excited im about to wet myself >_< I think its great that its all 8bit. It might be interesting to see it HD with the effects and flair but what it boils down to is that its a classic MM game and giving it a classic look is great. I would die of happyness if they made a NES cart version you could buy from their website or something. And if they dont Im eager to see if the game gets dumped and can be pushed on actual hardware. The only thing im bothered by is that its all download versions right now. I want a flesh and plastic version with a case and a manual I can collect lol. Even if they just put it out like that on DS and PSP I would be happy. A PS2 version wouldnt hurt either, maybe a new collection with MM9 and both the X collection and Classic collection rolled into one. Anway you slice it this is good news...
There are gameplay trailers h: How in the world did I miss that? Edit3: Actually I may have to eat these words. I watched a video(the one on ign) and didn't recognize many of the enemies(nor did I recognize the boss silhouettes), so hopefully I'm just a fool who speaks to suddenly and Capcom is doing exactly what I had hoped for. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy that they have decided to go with a look similar to the originals, and I'm in no way disappointed that it isn't hi-res similar to sf2hd. While I wouldn't mind smooth characters and fluid animations, I would assume that would increase the price well above $15, which is right in the sweet spot in my opinion.(as well as making it hard to retain a similar look). I just hate to see them reuse so much art. Bear in mind I really have no idea what I'm talking aboutconfused: ) but I would assume creating new sprites and animations on par with what was seen on previous MM titles wouldn't be too costly of an endeavour(considering most characters have 2-4 frames of animation). Neither would creating new music comparable in quality to earlier titles. It's great that they are actually making a MM9 that sticks to the series routes, It's just that I would be ecstatic if the game was full of new sprites/music. As of now I'm simply happy it's coming out at all. (I'm actually more excited about what this, hopefully, means for the future of new retro titles then MM9 itself). Also.... From what I understand it is going to be available on wiiware only. I believe there was an e3 list that claimed it to be coming to other platforms, but Capcom has since said that was a mistake. Edit: offtopic, but Jesus, I just realized it has been almost 3 years since I signed up here. Time seems to go so much faster then it did when I was a teenager. edit2: I should make it clear that I havn't actually gone to the trouble of comparing any sprites to see if they are in fact from earlier games. There are a few I know to be from previous titles(such as the dragon and the fire around him, and the helmet enemy obviously), and while the rest of them I have seen do look very familar I could very well be wrong and the majority of the games art could be new. Maybe someone more knowledable could say whether or not they are all reused or not.
http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18991 and you also know that I want to head up a project to do it myself. Anyways I think my gripes with the game are well known I just picked up ZX advent and I already hate it. I didn't care much for ZX either and if these people are behind Mega Man 9.....we're in trouble. I also think Mega Man Deserves better than this. This could have been an epic HD opus presented in 2d sprawled out with twice as many robot masters as before with a tie in to the X series. Instead we get what bascially should be Mega Man 3 (with 3 being 4 and so on) However....the music in the trailer is kick ass. I love the bosses names first time since 2 that I felt a mega man game had bosses that could become icons (if 5 was easier than maybe 5's bosses because I think 5 had the most clever set of bosses ever) But the game was too hard to really be one of the best games in the series. I don't care much for 4. 6 is growing on me. Don't like 7 even in the 8bit fan remale. 8 Is my 2nd or 3rd fave. 1 is growing on me. 2 everybody loves. 3 is legendary. SO that's my 2 cents. so unless 9 is a prelude to something bigger I dunno. It shows promise yes and I'll no doubt get it. But I'm still proceeding with the Fan game. You grow up with a character you feel they're more yours than it's creators. My Friend tim is like that with sonic.
While I'm a fan of (most) of the games in the x series(not including the gba titles, didn't care for them much) I'd prefer it that any straight MM games have little to nothing in common with it. The only element I would want to see more of in MM games is the addition of more hidden areas, though nothing mandatory to completing the game.
You guys are mad if you think that looks good. capcom are just being lazy bastards with that. It's 100% NES / Famicom quality. 1 guy on his own could probably throw that together since all the spites are just recycled ones. I really can't believe that Capcom can call this a new game. I bet it's made from levels that were left out of the older games. Just think what people would say if Sega released a new Sonic game that looked like the Master System ones. I'm sure the slagging would have no end. Yakumo
Every one it drinking Capcom's cool aid talking about how it's a throwback and blah blah blah. It's laziness. It only takes them 6 months to cobble together an 8 bit Mega Man. Mega Man 5 and 6 were only that much apart. Maybe 4 months if like with Mega Man 5 they put no thought into the Level design. The Difference though between Capcom doing this and Sega doing this. NES Sprites are indeed somewhat iconic so it would make sense to cash in on them. The Master system while higher quality than NES graphics.....still tend to look like half assed shit. So Capcom can afford laziness they just say Hey it's a throw back and offer up the cool aid and people will believe them. personally I think Mega Man deserves better. But we'll see how this works out. I actually can't stop watching the Trailer.
Are you sure? If you havn't watched the trailer on ign http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14260822/mega-man-9/videos/mm9multidebu.html please do and let me know if what is seen in that video is mostly reused. I don't recognize many of them, but I'm in no way an expert on MM titles. And you would be right, but replace Master System with Mega Drive and I think most sonic fans would estatic. I think there is still a place in the market for new 8(or 16) bit games, but their success largely lies on how lazy the dev's will be. If Capcom decides to reuse older work for the majority of 9 I won't buy the game. But if they can manage to keep the old to new sprite ratio low, and the gameplay is solid, they'll get my $10. Which is an excellent price in my opinion. If the market value of old nes games on the wii is $6 I see no reason why a new title would retail for the same price. The big difference is that at that time most if not all of Capcom's employees were skilled in some area of 2d game creation. I would assume that today very few of their employees specialize in 2d games. I would also guess that the majority of work for MM9 is being handled by a much smaller team. Then again if all this talk of reused work is true 9 could very well be handled by one or two people in a relativly short amount of time.
the only reused sprites I've noticed so far are Mets sniper joes (Mega Man classics it's not Mega Man with out them) and mega man himself. I don't mind reused sprites. But this is Capcom....Morrigan had the same sprite for like ever. Initi Creates the company that did ZX and ZX Advent as well as the Zero Games is doing 9 or at least some of it. So they have some experence with 2d. However....the ZX games are bleh at best horrible at worst (but playable) ZX isn't mega man either just using the name. There are some phenominal and challenging Mega Man Fan games out there so there's alot to live up to. Mega Man's fanbase is pretty rabid and I don't think we've been that happy with it's direction as of late
lazy or not, it's the game that will count. I look forward to this because the game must be damn good to justify its alleged oldschoolness.
Really doesn't have to be DAMN good. if people think mega Man 5 was good people will love 9. I also think that this one has the best boss line up since 2. 1 and 2's bosses are icons 3-8 are barely memorable (Snake Man? Really? Ok then....) Only NOW we're getting a female boss? Things be gettin inderesting.
you're just changing your views because now you know the game will also be released on Live Arcade. That's pathetic though you Wii hater.:banghead:
