I know a good number of you guys enjoy metal, be it of the black, death, mathcore, progressive (etc) variety. Let's discuss this wonderful genre of music. :)

Death has always been one of my favorite death/progressive metal bands. They are widely regarded as pioneers of death metal, and released eight studio albums.

Unfortunately, the band's founder (Chuck Shuldiner) was diagnosed with cancer and died in December of 2000 from pneumonia. His effect on death metal was tremendous, and many of the band members went on to play in other high-profile bands.

One of those bands is Cynic. I've recently listened to Cynic's Focus, and I have to say that it's easily one of the best records I've ever heard in my life. The concept of the music is unique, and I have to admit that's pretty rare in metal.

They have the standard growling/screaming guy, but instead of being lead he complements another vocalist. The second vocalist sings through a device known as a vocorder, and this puts out an electronic sound.

Some of the melodies they create are absolutely beautiful. If you listen to any technical/progressive metal at all, you need to hear Cynic.

Wow, I'll search something about Cynic right now, I like prog a lot :D
I'm not a black/death metal fan, I'm more into heavy, thrash (I saw Exodus live some weeks ago, it was amazing), prog and power genres.
Anyway, a topic like this was missing, great idea!

I prefer a good piece of Iridium myself, although you can't beat a tiny chunk of Terbium either. [/pun]

im watching the youtube link, they are pretty good...but that 'vocorder' crap is gay. i dont like the growly guy either, but the electronic shit just ruins everything. id buy some of their albums if there was a way to delete the tracks with those vocals on them.

Hmmm ok here goes, when I am in a very angry mood. There I put Manowar on (even when I am not in an angry mood there I also like Manowar). And then there is Iron Maiden, Nightwish and Guns´n Roses when I feel like I am in a nostalgic mood, heck they were my first "heavy" and damn Slash was an awesome Guitar player (and still is).
I am not particular fond of Nightwishes new singer, she reminds me of the leadsingers in Evanescence :banghead::banghead::banghead::noooo::fresh:

Then we have Sonata Arctica which I like too, but black, doom, are not really my cup of tea. And well if you want me to comment Slayer, then I would throw their work right next to the dumpster. The first I heard with Slayer was like a Metallica ripoff , and now they are a itsy bit heavier than Metallica (perhaps a bit more death) , but
    still fucking boring.

Metallica hasn´t been great in many years, so you have to shout out songtitles so I can comment on them. But anyway there are probably more great metal bands, than those I can remember right now.

I heard some Slayer the other day, at a record store . And well I think they are non musical deathy TRASH "metal". Sepultura is much better than Slayer. But anyway Slayer makes me uncomfortable , and why I am not really fond of Evanescence is because it is too "poppy" and Nightwish shouldn´t be poppy . But when the new singer doesn´t have a great big voice, then her little voice reminds me of Evanescence. And Nightwish was famous for having another sound than Evanescence , but since the leadsinger in Nightwish dropped out. Then it made me cringe when they had chosen a female singer who had an Evanescence like voice...

Trash doesn´t have any kind of real melody , just like some doom , black , death metal songs have. And if the melody is churned through the guitar at a speed where you can´t hear it, and there are no real harmonies in it. Then I just turn off, and throw the shit into the dumpster.

Majesty is a German "true metal" band which made a cool live CD and DVD some years ago.

And right now I am listening to a quite cool heavy version of Pippi Longsocks Theme in Swedish, it is a VERY funny song even in heavy version. But anyway I like so many genres, and bands. That I could talk for hours about it.

Not really a great fan of metal, but if I do listen to it its stuff like Pentagram, Trouble, Saint Vitus, Black Sabbath. Like all eras of Bathory quite a bit too.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about, I felt the same way when I listened the last album. It's really disappointing...

I like thrash, but the problem with it is that you have to pass through tons of crappy bands (I don't like Slayer or Sepultura as an example) to find the good stuff. I recommend you to listen Dublin Death Patrol, a new band formed by ex-members of bands like Exodus or Testament, between others. They sound really good and they don't just make noise, you definitely have to check it out :D

BTW, I have the Majesty CD since a couple of years, great stuff.

Old In Flames is what drives me the most right now (Lunar Strain through Jester Race). Jesper Stromblad is a genius - simply wonderful (and a very friendly, humble guy ). As a guitarist myself, I truly appreciate the music - while not incredibly technical, its AMAZING - the harmonies, the themes, the feel.

Also listening to Opeth's Blackwater Park - my fav Opeth album.

Jester Race is an astonishing album.

And Still Life is far better than BWP!

The Jester Race is fantastic, along with Opeth's work. Have you guys listened to The Gallery by Dark Tranquility by any chance? That CD blew my mind, but then again I'm a sucker for the "Gothenburg" sound and odd time changes.
