It's not like you just shoot aliens either. For example, in Halo 3 you have to take down a Scarab, a giant walking tank, which is pretty damn cool.

The last few moments of the first and third one are pretty intense (depending on how into your games you get).

If I was going to call out a black sheep, I'd say Halo 2 is that sheep, though it did bring a lot to the series.

I'm not trying to offend any particular members, but how many times in JRPGs have the villains been corrupt religious characters / Monsters?

The same kind of people who call Halo generic probably praise generic crap themselves, like JRPGs. Granted, Persona 3 tried to be different. Sorta. And it had to be a dating sim with the characters pretending to shoot themselves in the head with magical toy guns.

I don't mind killing Aliens, I'd rather play that than a historic shooter, but thats just a little bias I have.

Jamtex said "played well on a console". Goldeneye was an awesome game 10 years ago. but i find it unplayable now. from the frame rate to the single analog stick. i even played Perfect Dark on an overclocked 64 and i couldn't play it for more than a few minutes. and i used to love those games back in the day. just my opinion.

Halo mastered the controls for an FPS on a console. a lot of shooters that came after Halo, that were released on a console, copied Bungie's control scheme.

With Halo the control scheme was the same, they only used the analog indeed of "c" buttons, because N64 didn't have two analogs; yes Halo plays better, but the idea is of controls is exactly the same, as I've said before.

Jamtex, that post was so very...unlike you! Impressive!

exactly though, whoever said Halo is as "deep as a puddle", I DOUB't you even played Halo. When the flood came in, it was totally unexpected. Especially when the game first came out. And when the series got to the second installment, and you found out more about why the covenant was doing what they were doing...and you start to understand the religious based government that runs the covenant race you can see the parallelisms to anchient civilizations that bungie drew from.

All I was trying to point out was that Halo was a minor evolution of an already well-stablished genre, and it's a genre of which I've long since tired. I don't object to anything in your posts, Phreqency, it's great that you like the series, and they are decent, well polished games, but I hope you'll respect that they don't do it for me.

I own and have completed the first Halo game. What more would you ask of me?

Own and Complete the 2nd and 3rd game :p. Nah Just kidding.

The only thing Ive ever had a complaint about In the halo series is that you will never(So far) be able to understand the story completely untill youve read the books, The books Explain everything From Before the First game All the way up to EVERYTHING. Its a good series of books.

That being said, I bought a ps3 just for MGS4 and sold it after I beat the game a week later. I feel that the game coming to the 360 Would be amazing because, I just(my opinion) feel that the 360 so far has the best games, and MGS4 would just add to its already expansive line up of Awesome games.

Yes lots of really playable FPS games on consoles around that time, I mean there was, erm.... er.... give me a minute I am sure one will come to me... erm... er....

(Goldeneye was nice but the N64 joypad was not the greatest at playing the game, which was a shame as GE was one of the better games on the N64).

I don't see how a shift in platform defines a revolution. Are you honestly contesting that there were similar games to Halo around before Halo was released? It was a well-made game that improved on the staples of the genre (although the level design on the first game suffered from excessive Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V). What more is there to say? The messianic reverence it receives puzzles me. Someone earlier in the thread said that it was the first game to attach melee to a single button press. Heavens, what a revolution! Really striking into daring new ground there. Never mind that Duke Nukem 3D did it in 1996.

I was going to say, Duke Nukem can do it! But I don't know of anything else. It really does add a lot to the game though, especially multiplayer.

About MGS4....is it really all that?

If you were into the other games, you'll find it to be a very well done goodbye to the series.

If you haven't, you still may enjoy randomly killing hundreds of guys, as well as the innumerable unlockables.

okay, duke 3D did. But I was still playing Doom and then Quake, so I never played duke 3D.

Did melee's in Duke have as much of an impact as they did in halo? I'm not sure, since i never played it I won't say.

However- you mentioned Ctrl-C control V for the level design. yes lot's of area's felt similar - that is what they were going for.

And Halo became known for it's mutiplayer. It has a pace, an ebb and flow, that is not matched by other shooters. The games don't have an "all powering" gun, like the rockets or railgun in quake. there is no BFG. There is no "redeemer". Quake and Unreal are fast paced, while other shooters are much slower (like Cod). Halo set the ground for a medium paced FPS. A strategic mutiplayer FPS, that isn't about perfect team set ups like Battlefield, or Twitch action like Quake.

Granted- some don't like the mutiplayer. That's fine. and I admit - a lot of people like halo just because the backing of people behind it. but I will be the first to admit- when I first saw Halo. I was unimpressed. When I saw my friends play the campaign, I was unimpressed. When I played the first level or two, I was still left unimpressed.

When we did co-op. I was still, unimpressed. So we tried Versus. We did a free for all, on prisoner, with standard slayer. And I was still, unimpressed. Slayer Pro however, made me fall in love with the game.

If you just play some Random ass Gametype on Halo 3, like Zombies or some all rockets or something like that, you'll feel it's just another FPS. But when you break that core, and start to understand the dynamics of the game you will see it's a MUCH deeper FPS than a lot of others out there.

Earlier we mentioend the regenerative health and someone said it does nothing for them. Really? I'm glad I don't have to hunt down health packs now in FPS games. But one thing about the regernative health system - In Halo. It makes sense. Your armor regenerates it's "shield", when the shield is broken after enough hits you will sustain damage and die.

In COD4, or Rainbow Six Vegas...where you're human and not a cyborg...I don't understand how standing still after getting 30 bullets to the chest will allow you to take another 30 bullets to the chest xD.

No, it didn't. I appreciate the three-pronged attack choice in Halo (melee, grenade, weapon), but again: this was refining something that was already present in many FPS games. Bungie had buttons to spare on the pad and assigned these actions to them, which cut out the need to weapon switch. This does not constitute a tectonic shift in gaming to me.

Ahem. Nothing to do with the developers having a launch deadline approaching fast and needing to bulk out the game, then? I'm sure they really wanted to reuse level assets over and over again rather than making each area unique and interesting.

Aside from that, I appreciate what you're saying - I'm sure the multiplayer in Halo is excellent, but given that I don't really go for deathmatch, and I definitely don't go for deathmatch with a random assortment of mouthbreathing idiots online, the Halo series doesn't really offer me much.

This is my problem with Halo. I love playing team multiplayer with my friends, but it really fucking sucks when you play with total assholes who do nothing but hide and do cheap shit. I hate that on any game. It would be nice if people played a game like the game instead of exploiting parts of the level design so they can be THE BEST SNIPER EVER.

I think a big reason I like Halo's multiplayer is because of the shields, if someone shoots me in the back I can still beat there ass. I played COD4 with people the other day and it really irritates me when I always die cus some guy runs up and shoots me in the back, or hides the whole game. I just can't stand shooters where everyone camps. I need to move!

Alchy you are right about some repetitive parts in Halo 1. The similair rooms inside the buildings on Halo is a good example, but it still works for me.

there is far more to halo than deathmatch. capture the flag, assault (kind of like plant the bomb in Counterstrike), Oddball, king of the hill and others.

And I don't like playing with random people online either - I do a lot of LAN parties and play with my friends. We'll get a group and go into the team slayer playlist. You can't hear the other team during the match.

also - I'm sure some of the reason the levels are repetetive is because of time but I felt it gave a deja vu feeling while playing the game.
