I finally had the chance to try it for 10 minutes at a shop... It had nintendogs on. I tried it normal. yahwn. completely dsish. tried to move the slide from 2d to 3d. ENORMOUS ghostings. I told the seller about it and he said that's better to try it with the menues to appreciate it. he brought the handheld to said menu' with a rotating square with mees on it. nothing special on 2d. started moving it to 3d. At max 3d the effect was very small and not so impressive, but at least no ghosting. i'm deeply unimpressed, i literally said "is that it? nothing more?". is it so for me only, do i have an eye problem? do glasses spoil the effect? or is it all the matter just a silly very limited 3d effect gimmick? i'm really 100% confused. or maybe it was the game's fault, or the lighting in the shop? i can' understand people getting crazy on such a little effect.
I don't have one but a mate of mine reckons you need to spend a bit of time with it before you figure out where the sweet spot for 3D is. You do have to get it right or you'll see ghosting everywhere.
I see a lot of ghosting on some games. Pilotwings Resort has awful ghosting at full 3D, and still maintains some in dark areas with the 3D down low. Rayman 3D has more ghosting than not going on. I see ghosting on the avatars of racers in Ridge Racer 3D. Haven't experienced much of it in SSFIV or Steel Diver though. It seems to be a major problem with light colors over dark colors (or vice versa). I'm hoping its a software issue and that as developers get more used to programming for the system it appears less, because it is certainly annoying. Also, this ghosting happens regardless of being in the sweet spot.
jp have you tried toying with brightness levels on your 3DS? I'm starting to wonder if the ghosting is color bleed from nearby pixels.
What's this "ghosting" phenomenon that I keep hearing about? Is it those double images that you see when the 3D isn't quite balanced? Or is it more akin to blurring? I'm not really sure what it is exactly based off my limited play of th 3DS
I saw it running Rayman. Reminded me of the holograms that were popular when I was a kid. Kind of a parallax effect rather than real 3D. A bit like the Virtual Boy. I don't know if Rayman is a good example though.
$250 for a handheld 3d device with no need for glasses. People complain. really? really? You know how big a jump this is? Makes me wonder what it would take to impress you!!!
I don't think people here are crapping on the capability of glasses-less 3D itself, Assembler. They are just having issue with having to adjust a certain way never before needed.. and also that the effect has been a mixed-bag game to game and even within the game itself. I haven't played one, so I can only comment so far. If 3D is to reach the masses, then this glasses-less solution IS the key to making it happen. So for now, the technology is new and will have the usual share of bumps and difficulties and be expensive and so forth. I don't want to buy a specific HDTV with a specific technology and have to buy proprietary hardware glasses and leave out people because there aren't enough sets of glasses to go around. Glasses-less 3D is the only way. We'll get there and it will be an interesting (and as always, expensive) ride.
Go see a doctor and have your eyes tested for stereo vision... There are people who see little to no 3D at all, be it with the 3DS, cinema movies, or even 'real life'. I'm one of those who are compeltely stereo blind which means I don't see any difference between 2D and 3D content. I still enjoy my 3DS and think about getting another from a different region.
It's a jump that we don't need, doesn't work, and from the way Nintendo's influence has worked before, a jump that will begin to infect other systems needlessly.
There's definitely some ghosting, but it's not all that noticeable in the games I've played. As far as the 3D effect being "very small" ... well, no offense but that's a load of crap. To me, and everyone I've shown it to, the effect is pretty striking. If the 3D effect isn't very noticeable to you even with the 3D slider set to high, then there must be something abnormal about your eyes or your visual system.
I feel fairly confident now that the ghosting is a developer error and not the hardware in general. My reason is as follows: In Ridge Racer 3D, I would often see light ghosting on the vehicle I was selecting (during the select your vehicle screen). Thus, I decided to investigate by closing one eye. When I closed my left eye, the ghosting disappeared. However, when I closed my right eye, I could clearly see the "ghost", only now it was rather clear and it just looked like they copied and pasted a piece of the image to the right a little bit. I suspect the problem is similar in Pilotwings Resort, though its mostly NOTICEABLE in dark areas. I guess in lighter areas its just not as apparent. Thus far, Rayman 3D is the worst about ghosting, but given that Ubisoft pretty much phoned in their launch line-up, that shouldn't be surprising. Also, subbie: I did mess with the brightness. Ghosting was still there. I didn't think it was color bleeding though because the "ghost" isn't connected to the object, its just a transparent version of the object shifted a little bit.
IMHO,the feat would have been impressive is properly executed. I bet that the next 3ds release will fix lots of problems... like now it's like seeing a pseudo 3d effect with a dept of a few millimeters and that in many situations ends in ghosting  No problem with my eyesight and i can enjoy 3d films at the cinema...
I have it as well as steel diver & Super street fighter 4 3D. It takes time to get used to at first, but once you figure out the right distance and angle it works excellent. My only complaints are: A.) The web browser/3ds/dsi store aren't going to be up till may 5th at the earliest. And, B.) The top screen is scaled down for ds games. Neither are pivotal or that big of a deal.
In my personal experience, so far I'm loving my 3DS. I have Pilotwings and SSFIV. I find the 3D effect in SSFIV pretty cool, but in Pilotwings it makes my head hurts and I can't see anything unless the slider is almost all the way down. That being said, even without the 3D I would recommend people to buy it.
I play Pilotwings on almost full blast in regards to 3D, I think it helps enormously. I guess everyone's eyes are different, which is why the slider is such a good idea. I never had to "find the sweet spot", I just tilted the thing until the 3D jumped out, it took half a second. I hear it's much more difficult on display units that are fixed at a given angle, you really need to be holding it.
I tried it, ghosting wasnt that much of a problem to me, in fact it wasn't as evident as it was in the fat PSP. The price is over the top though, considering what you're getting. I'm waiting on this one for two reasons: lack of games and the imminent cheaper&better version that will come out in a year or so.
3D works great on 3DS but you must watch directly at the screen and keeping it at about 35cm from your eyes. I suppose it's hard find the right spot on a shop. If someone has a 3D enabled device here a set of photos I took with 3DS. There are some nice effects in there: http://3dporch.com/users/Celine
Does it ever get old? I mean eventually I forgot that Avatar was actually 3D about half way through the film. It's a nice feature for sure but there's going to be fuck load of crap games hoping a few fancy 3D effects will carry them to the top of the charts.
