    It's crazy to consider the possibility that the community kept better records of their products than they did.

    But yeah, I agree. There's going to be hacks for this thing, but at that point...what makes this different from a Orange Pi? A nice looking case seems to be about about it.

    Well iirc the OPi doesn't have physical power and reset buttons either. Total dealbreaker, I know...

    Going by Nintendo's source drop, those controller ports are just speaking I²C btw, so if you really really want to have pads with short cords I guess you could harvest some connectors from dead Wiimotes or whatever and slap sth together.

    its not really wanting to have the short controllers but more about making a proper clone box

    Not crazy, it happens all the time. Some displays in the NYC Nintendo Store use Evan's pictures: https://twitter.com/VanamoMedia/status/797223571286278144

    I am betting they lost all the source code from the 1980's. They would have done something more like a new DLC for original zelda with more dungeons or "zelda maker".

    Zant and BLUamnEsiac like this.

    Not really all that crazy, they need to get the firmware on there somehow and since the USB port's gonna be installed anyways, why go through the bother of pre-flashing the memory...

    Well when you put it that way it just further pushes the theory that this is an extremely lazy console

    Why so negative? How about "simplified", or "streamlined"?
    We live in a time where computing hardware is powerful enough to not matter all that much any more, so as long as the software side is good, everything's peachy. And in this specific case you don't even have to lock down anything tbh since all the roms are out there already anyways, and the NES emulator implementation is just good enough for mass marketing but lagging behind more accurate open source ones, ie someone getting access to that probably doesn't matter either. So why overcomplicate things without any need?

    @rso
    As a side note, take into account that the emulator was made by Nintendo's internal team (N.E.R.D) for a replica of one of their old products (as opposed to something like Virtual Console). So i think it might be worthwhile for someone to see how it functions compared to the open source ones.

    That was pretty obvious anyway, since you can plug the Wii "Classic Controller" into it, and that was already known to use I2C

    So if you can install linux on it, how would you run it via usb and charge it at the same time? Multi-USB port? Would it work that way? I Imagine you'd need a usb keyboard and mouse cause linux wouldn't be able to just take the classic controller unless it was recognized somehow.

    Interesting I hope Nintendo doesn't fix this in the later units.

    You also have to remember that nintendo has to service these units as well, when it comes to warranty repairs, cheaper (less time spent) is all they care about..

    if the famicom mini ever gets modified to the point of having SD cards, a mini FDS SD reader would be awesome hehe
