Nintendo has posted a six-month income deficit of ¥4.2 billion ($51.7 million) for the period ending September 30, 2010, down from a ¥69.5 billion ($854.5 million) profit in the same timeframe in 2009.

Net income fell to 23.2 billion yen ($285 million) in the three months ended in September, leading the company to forecast its annual profits to drop to the lowest level in six years.

The losses were put down to the strength of the Yen, falling hardware sales for the company's existing systems, and the announcement that the 3DS will launch in early 2011, missing this year's holiday period.

Nintendo's sales for the first half of its financial year were down 34%.

This fall is due to lower demand for its Wii console, which garnered 4.97 million global sales for the period, compared to 5.75 million in the previous year, and likewise its DS handheld, which dropped from 11.7 million units last year to 6.69 million this year.

The release of its latest figures came after the close of Thursday trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Nintendo shares closed down 0.7%.

I find it funny the way they use the term " lost money". They never had it in the first place. They should say " didn't make as much money"

Not surprising considering everyone and their grandmother owns a Wii now.

Seriously, who is left to buy one who doesn't own one, besides those who buy multiples?

? I didn't see the use "lost money" (unless i'm blind).

In general the first paragraph states they spent more money then they took in. So in other words they lost money/negative profit.

Hmm i don't see that at all.

To me it just says they made less money than they were, not really surprising taking into factor market penetration as other members already stated... add in the fact that a large portion of their software library is shovelware and not even worth renting. I don't see anywhere it saying they spent more than they took in which would really be a loss.

Regardless i couldn't care either way, imho they should have already released wii2 or at least wii1.5 XD

If i project/estimate/whatever that i will make 1 million USD in 2011 based on my income from the previous year/quarter/etc/etc and i fall short of it and make only $600,000 did i somehow just loose $400,000 based on Nintendo's financial logic?

Is there an echo in here?

Considering how loaded they are from the past years, this certainly isn't a problem. But it is hilarious, IMO.

Nintendo do have a good Investor Relationship page, so you can read the gory details for yourself.
    http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2010/101028e.pdf

The operating loss was indeed the figure that everyone said but the important one is the 6 month net loss, which was 2.011 billion yen or nearly 25 million dollars, most of this was in currency losses, due to the strong yen. Over 62 billion yen... the GDP of the Seychelles or 768 million dollars.

And this is a loss, not earning 50 million dollars less then last year. Although if Nintendo stopped tomorrow they still have 1.5 Trillion... the GDP of Bolivia or 18.8 billion dollars in assets worldwide. So they could make losses like this for about 20 years before they ran out of money...

I can see Sony, Nintendo, NEC, Toyota, Fujitsu, Matsushita, Honda, Fuji Heavy Industries wanting to punch the finance minister for the continued strength of the Yen. Nintendo even predict that the Yen will still be strong next march and will get stronger against the Euro...

I think it´s normal that the hype the Wii had in the past would not last forever. Despite that fans of casual games (btw casual games are NOT bad games) never were die hard videogame fans. The Wii did a lot of things right and still does, but the life span of the Wii is comming to an end... :crying:

Not bad when you consider the Wii is a just rebadged Gamecube at the end of the day... talk about flogging a dead horse. Novelty sold the Wii, little else.

They pretty much own the handheld market and don't look like they'll lose that position for a few years at least.

No violins playing for Nintendo over here - I say they've been pretty lucky these last few years - if the psp had done better things would be very different.

The only legitimate use for a Wii is homebrew. Other than that it's just shovelware and gimmicky peripherals.

Uh no he was telling the truth. The Wii's hardware is almost identical to the gamecube with a few enhancements. When it first came out developers talked about how easy it was to develop for since they had already been programming the gamecube for years. It also played gamecube games right out of the box.

Whats worse is that the wii still comes with RCA cables only. Try hooking up a wii to a post 2007 tv and it looks abysmal. Component cables are a must just to get a decent picture. Of course all consoles come with RCA only right now but they get away with having current gen graphics and hdmi ports for HD.

The 3DS will be a game changer for them though. The beginning of the next gen after ps3 series of consoles.
