Google used to have the "cached" text below each link years ago, but they "tidied" it.

I guess the cached pages aren't used to often, but they are VERY handy for old articles like this, and especially for obsolete / hard-to-find datasheets etc. ;)

For example, finding the Sega Packet Interface document a few years ago was great (after FamilyGuy or somebody mentioned it's existance.)

I dont want to beat a dead horse and its all up to the owner to share & care or just bury this device in his garden.

So, maybe I did miss something new about this thing...somewhere on the net ?
Any news would be good news, but Im slowly starting to loose interest in this thing. -_-

That sounds fair I think. For 30k$ that's 375 hardcover books at 80$ each. Independant publishing of harcover is kinda expensive, that plus travel expenses etc., plus a little profits because you got to pay bills. Not that bad.

Had this been found by an overexcited 15 years old, there would be a 1M$ Kickstarter for starting a twitch channel streaming a live feed of the console sitting in a dark closet.

Crowdfunding is supposed to cover the R&D costs - effectively replacing the investor / loan stage. Which, indeed, is what they're asking for (to go to Japan and get a translator). If you see it only as "free" advertising (i.e. I need to make 10,000 to make tooling worthwhile, so let's sell 10,000), your business is going to fail. You don't just pick some target and say you need to sell that many copies. If their goal is to self-publish and print so many books upfront - well, it's a risky strategy.

Anyway, it's a book. It's always possible to PUBLISH a book regardless - you get a publishing deal, or self-publish. You can, technically, publish today at no cost to you... although it's going to give you less profit. So we're talking about the costs of writing the book. It doesn't cost $30k to write a book. Yes, there are costs associated with travel if you're needing to travel, of course. Still... $30k? In fact, they say more like $40k. Eh, maybe.

Sorry but I don't understand your point. I think 30k$ is fair for the cost of traveling and publishing. I used the small calculation as an estimation, a ballpark figure. That said, I don't plan on buying it.

That's stupid. Unless he can get someone who actually worked on the hardware, he's just some guy taking pictures of a system pulled from a trash heap and writing summaries of threads found on this site.

The insights gained by finding this system warrant an article, maybe two.
    A book? No.

He's like that guy who found a sega pluto. He tried desperately to make it something special, but there just wasn't anything beyond the initial look.

    Awesome stuff, guys. :D

I will have a play with the BIOS now.

@Cauterize - I didn't know you were on here, Adam.
Thanks again for the article on the Dreamcast HDMI project - we're still working on it. ;)

Just found an issue with the current prototype, but it's easily fixed, and the final-final board is nearly finished.

Sounds like you don't know the full story of how this guy aquired it, and how he's related to it.

Oh dear - I can't get the BIOS to work under MESS with the debugger enabled - it just spits out errors?

    "Exception at EIP=7485B090 (construct_ioport_microtouch(device_t&, ioport_list&, astring&)+0x7265b3d8): ACCESS VIOLATION
While attempting to read memory at FD37FD4E"

It's obviously doing some IO reads that MESS isn't set up for. Hmm.

Not to worry - I played around with BSNES for a while, and managed to find the IO ports for the CD drive (I think?)...

Looks like it's mapped at $21E0 to $21E5, at least those addresses are accessed during the CD-ROM decoder / CD Player self test?

    Interesting stuff. ;)

"The elder Diebold explains that he got the prototype at a bankruptcy auction of a company where former Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Olaf Olafsson worked."

Fascinating. I hope Ben Stiller plays him in the movie.

    EDIT:
    From the kickstarter:
"We would travel to Japan and interview some of the people who worked on the project or anyone who was associated with the project in anyway."

That's a great idea. As we know from experience, Nintendo will happily discuss unreleased products; all you have to do is ask nicely.

Owners are being silly. Sony or nintendo can demand return of it, and if they need 30k to make a book they don't have the money to defend repeatedly in court against lawyers.

They should have shut up, sold it and moved on.

All they are doing is drawing more and more attention to themselves.
