Well after seeing a topic on neogaf of people getting back into playing Gameboy games, it kind of made me think back on the games I use to sit around playing and also got me thinking of GB i missed out on.

So i'm diving back in to GB games, maybe after a few months i'll upgrade on to GBC but for now i'm strickly keeping to GB compatible games (games that are in color when on a GBC do qualify).

    --------------------------------------------------
Here is what I got so far these past three days..
. Duck Tails (slighly remember playing a friends copy onetime)
. Donkey Kong 94 (Was big on MvD, I think one time I did get it to play on my GBA but don't remember playing it much)
. Elevator Action (I think my brother had this onetime, I'm a big fan of the arcade games both Org & Returns)
. Motorcross Maniacs (This game was soo awesome back in the day, use to always play it when at a friends house)

Looking to get more but not sure what else to get. I think the big thing is I need to get my hands on a GB soon. I tried a few places over the past few days but all they had where beat up old GBC units. I kind of want to get a GB Lite or GB Pocket (at worse case). I know i could go GBA sp but I never liked how games stuck out on them. I never had a lite but the reason I want one is i'm most likely to play either at my desk at work (during builds) or at night after my wife heads off to bed (tend to turn down all the lights).

I think I might pass up on a few usual suspects (all Mario Land & Wario games) to get due to playing them too much in the past but I will probably cave in on zelda since it's been a while. I hear great things of Crayon Shin Chan 1 & 4 so I'm looking to get those soon (big fan of shinchan).

Feel free to join in, anybody got some old GB games lying around they want to get back into? Got any game recommendations on what I should play?

    --edit--
I forgot to note but untill I get my hands on a GB, i'm sadly going with emulation on my PSP to play them. =(

So far i've only put some time into duck tails & DK94. Dk is seriously hard at first and I was dying in the first 10s of the level. =P I'm getting better now and can beat 2 of the levels so far. DK94 I also find brutal, i'm on world 2-1 atm.

I still play the Gameboy port of Donkey Kong every now and again. I remember being very surprised to learn that it was a full-on complex platformer and not just a port of the arcade game. I also just picked up a few Pokemon games for the first time a month or two again, Red and Green specifically.

I find this topic really interesting because I don't feel like I ever stopped picking up GB and GBC games. I'm just now getting into the RTS genre, which put me in the position to pick up Warlocked just last week. I've also been hunting down the second Heroes of Might and Magic game to go with my lovely boxed copy of the first game. But keeping with your original restriction of original, first-run GB games only, the most interesting thing I've found lately is the first two Game and Watch gallery titles. The port of Donkey Kong on the second edition, with its odd chain ladders and swinging crane, are like nothing before or since.

You might want to check out picking up the InfoGenius productivity software that they released, just for a laugh. I have the Frommer's Travel cart here, and it's interesting to see phone numbers and addresses for airlines that don't exist and rental car companies that have long since folded. It's a little depressing to see recommendations on theme parks and other amusement places that don't exist any more. InfoGenius published some foreign language packs and an organizer too, if I'm not mistaken.

I grew up on GB/NES games but sadly I never really got into collecting stuff. I use to be really big on GBA stuff as that is what lead to me landing my first programming job. Most of my original GB stuff got destroyed in the past and I never really got into gbc other then to play MGS GB.

Right now with the prospects of stuff being sold on 3DSware got me thinking about getting back into stuff but after seeing the neogaf topic with people still having box filled with gb carts, I kind of wish to do the same. =)

How are the pawn shops in Ontario? I ended up picking up about a dozen GB and GBC carts for around $3 and $4 a piece when one shop in Florida did a big cull of old stock they couldn't move any more. That's where my Pokemon carts came from. Even the independent game shops tend to have a pile of unloved GBC games lying around for $5 a piece at most.

I thought of a couple of other interesting items to check out if you get the chance. Robopon Sun was an interesting Pokemon clone that had its own system link feature, an IRDA sensor built into the cartridge. There's also an interesting case of game asset reuse in the Real Ghostbuster and Garfield Labyrinth games by Kemco, in that they're exactly the same games but with different sprites. I also just now found my Gameboy Camera, which is hilarious for its limited capabilities but also for the interesting shooter and LCD segment games that it lets you superimpose images onto.

Is Duck Tails the same game as the NES version (only b/w)? If so, that's one hell of a game. One of my all-time favourites.

Should probably try it on GB too, just for the hell of it.

The maps in the Ducktales game differ significantly from the NES version, but it's otherwise the same game, with the same story and areas. Bounce around on the cane, Metroid your way through hidden passages and into power-ups, fight giant bosses. Collectors go after the original 1990 release rather than the 1992 reprint, but as far as I know there's no difference in the released code. I think I ended up paying $10 for my loose cart a year ago?

Does anybody know of any other platformers from capcom for the GB that are good? They made so many great games on the NES. I know there is the mega man games but not sure what else they did for gameboy.

Pawnshops are great but I'm not sure of any yet where I live. I'm sure there are tons of them but haven't walked by one yet.

There is a game store over here that has a sizable collection of GB games but as one can expect they try getting $10-$30 for each game. I probably could talk them down if I got a bunch. I end up getting Duck Tails & Donkey Kong 94 for $15 each they where in great shape. A store I went by today is far better on prices but the selection is somewhat sparatic (if they have something good, it goes quickly). I got Motorcross Maniacs for $3 & Elevator Action $7. They had a few others that interested me for good prices but I didn't want to get too much till I get a GB unit.

How do you tell which version you have? Is there something on the label to give it away?

Chris Corvell's "10 forgotten gameboy gems" is an excellent resource. I was lucky enough to find a copy of Peetan at auction recently, and I have to say it's an addictive little time killer.

Try Kid Dracula. It never came out in the US on NES but it did make it on GB. It might be hard to find/expensive though. Also try the GB Castlevania games. I recall the 2nd game having some sweet music.

Ninja Gaiden Shadow is a fun GB game as well. I could probably think up some others. GB has a big library and there are many fun games for it. I prefer to play them on the Super Gameboy though. I'm pissed there wasn't a Super Color Gameboy. I know there is the GB Player on GC but I don't have my GC hooked up but my SNES will always be as it is pure awesomeness where as the GC is meh.

I still play tetris all the time on my GB Pocket! Funny story, my gf was rummaging through my sock drawer where I keep a GBP wrapped in a sock(so that the screen doesnt get scratched) , and she thought it was some sort of weird sex toy...until she took it out of the sock.

I used to collect GB games, had over 60 carts once upon a time.

Favorite game would be Bombjack, the GB version is superb and it got great music!

subbie you should try getting a GB Light, it kicks ass!

I usually play Super Mario Land 2, Wario Land 2, Tetris, Pokemon Yellow and Silver, and Mickey's Speedway USA (don't remember if this one was GBC only or not).

Tatsujin's recommended games are great, you should go ahead and get those as well.

Me and a few mates got really into this back in 2003 or so, running it on an emulator for the Dreamcast. It's great fun, but the later levels... they just get abusive. I'm all for games having a bit of difficulty to them but that game pushed it, really.

thanks for the additional suggestions, will have to look into all of them.

On a capcom note, anybody here play Darkwing Duck or Gargoyle's Quest? Both look pretty good and i'm tempted to go after them next (since I like duck tails).

I've always loved Game Boy Camera. What makes it fun is the amount of tools they give you to make stuff (games, animations, you can even print stuff if you have a Game Boy Printer) and the pure Nintendo craziness they inject into it. It's worth it for the DJ mode alone, if you're interested in creating short little 8-bit tunes that is.

Sure, by todays standards it's pretty awful from a technical standpoint, but it's still really fun.

I think Duck Tales was one of my most played GB games. I'm sure that I found the location of every secret gem and chest, everything.

Gargoyle's Quest is quite the epic platform/RPG. Well worth playing through from what I remember.

Link's Awakening is an awesome Zelda game. The DX colour release really doesn't add that much to the game to be fair.

    Also:

    Super RC Pro Am
    Super Mario Land 2
TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan

And, um, lots more. Seriously, this was a looooong time ago. I have vague recollections of a quite a few quality games, but my memory is a little hazy....

    Edit:

    Fortified Zone
    Batman
Mega Man. I'm sure I played at least the first 3 GB MM games.
    Revenge of the 'Gator pinball
    Mario Golf

I love the GBC, has the nicest screen of the GB family :)

    Games I loved playing include...

Pitman (Catrap? in the US) - An excellent thinking puzzle game
Puzznic - A fun puzzle game
Tetris DX - Best version of Tetris on the GB (works on both GBC and GB)
Puzzloop - The original and the best, although works better on the GBC
Tetris Plus - Loved the puzzles in it
Marios Picross - I found the GB version quite nice and fun to play
Pokemon de Panepon (Pokemon Puzzle Challenge) - Although only for the GBC it is a great little game
Puyo Puyo Sun - Will work on the GB but is more fun on the GBC
Family Stadium (Bases Loaded) - Simple and fun baseball game
WWF Superstars - Simple and fun beat 'em up
Kirbys Pinball Land - It's pinball and its quite fun

And games mentioned above and the ones that I have forgotten about at the moment,,,

Actually I found an old neogaf topic topic that had a few users who where pretty big on it. I think this will be my next purchase (a local game shop has it on the inventory list but the online list only gets updated every few months).

Mmm the birds. I always like ****ing with the birds when I'm bored. =P
