GP, you live in Japan, right? It blows my mind to hear of Americans exporting this kind of racism to other countries like this. What a bunch of jerkoffs. Somehow I doubt that it will stay that way for very long though. I am assuming of course that Japan has the same kind of anti-discrimination laws that we do in the US? All it would take is for one black serviceman to get kicked out of that bar to bring that policy down. I don't know how it is in Japan, are segregated places still legal?
Where does it say Americans are exporting racism? It says the place caters to foreigners (specifically US serviceman) but nothing about who owns the place. Don't make statements like that unless you know them for a fact.
i went to the gas panic in roppongi once, it's now about 6 years ago. when i was there, i felt similar as you talking now about. ugly marines all the way!! even the doorkepper!
If I hadn't locked that thread, then id-republix and alien workshow would still be bitching about who is a child. It wasn't going to go anywhere other than piss everyone off. Was it the anti-democracy bit that annoyed you, or the loss of watching them at each others throats? The American understanding of "democracy" is an argument for another time. *sticks hard hat on*
You would assume so, but they don't. I know, it's strange, but what that place is doing is perfectly legal. To be honest, I don't know who owns Gas Panic, but I kind of have a feeling they're connected. Anyways, it's only one of their bars that is no-blacks (if that makes it any better). Apparently, it's less hassle for the women, they say. The kind of racism you see here is very institutionalized and usually very subtle. Things like what Assembler said are for the most part gone (at least in Tokyo). It's true - Chinese are kind of the scum of the Earth here (most of the women coming over and working in blow job shops, etc.) but you usually see things intitutionalized to make it hard for foreigners. The renting of an apartment is the first and foremost. With out a Japanese guarrantor, you can only rent a shithole. I don't mean "if you're poor", I mean if you' have a pulse. YOu can make $100,000 a year... you still need a guarrantor, and these are very hard to come by. There's the almighty language barrier. I don't give a shit what anyone says, doing your own legal work is fucking hard if you don't have a decent grasp of the langauge. They're just now getting people that can stumble through English at the ward offices and immigration. I'd hate to see what it's like in the country side. You can do it, but it's a LOT of work. On the not so suble side -- I'll be damned if an empty cab will stop for my ass on Saturday nights. I think the only thing that will get you out of the first two, is learning Japanese. It's extremely hard to dehumanize someone that you can communicate with. That's the way I see it anyway. In conclusion, while you'll likely never see a public humiliation or anything like that, you might see some weird sign somewhere that just states matter-of-factly, you're not welcome. I guess if you're from North Korea you might get an ass-beating though. On a similar note, A colleague of mine was ejected from a taxi in Seoul after confessing he was American.
well, that's true that it degenerate really too deep and quick, but that's not because 2 or 3 persons begin a war that everyone is included to it. and that's tru that some people tried to pitch rocks/blame to everyone ... I personnaly didn't like this comment, that, in fact, tried to make join everyone in the same fight...: (edited by myself) but did i start a war for this? i think some people are to blame for this , and that's true. but can we punish everyone here for three memebers? the majority of those who argue in this tread stoped to post at a moment because they know that it was going too far. this tread turned to war , when everyone that started it didn't whant this. but , hey, that was a fault and nothing else. anyway, i'll not demanding to you , moderators, the impossible but could we try again ? you know, those things where new to those who started the war , they need to know how to manipulate it. :smt023 its not because you do sushi for the first time and you miss them literally that you can't learn after! mmm...this sushi argue make me whant to eat somes. :smt043
GaijinPunch it's Japan where racism is a general thing.Chinese, koreans and japanese brazilians have a really tough time over there.I wonder why you still mention it because it's a general thing in japan.
Cahaz, you are very correct. We (the mods) don't want to have to resort to locking threads, but if a few people take it too far, then we dont have a lot of choice. By all means, discuss politics all you like, but when it comes down to petty name calling, then something has to be done. We don't want members falling out because of something as "trivial" as politics. We all like having a joke and taking the piss sometimes (look at the DS thread), but some things have be given a wide birth. No country is perfect, period!
I think you should have told the main culprits to calm down or not post on that thread anymore then lock it if that didn't work. Too bad there isn't a way to lock a thread for certain people.
After all that crap, the thread was pretty much unsalvageable (spl) If people want to start a new thread, nobody is stopping them, just act like adults and accept not everyone shares the same views as yourself.
It's interesting. The Japanese colony in Brazil is the biggest one in the world (outside of Japan of course). They came because of the World War, and now they treat ther descendant so badly...go figure. Of course, we are a third world (sic) country you can say... PD
But Japan is generally a racist country, you probably won't notice it that much if you're white, skilled/qualified with a good job and behave like a "good japanese citizen" (good apartment, wife, social) but many will still be scared or have other weird opinions of you.
Are you used to restaurants who won't let you eat because they think foreigners might not like the food or japanese only shops/clubs/massage parlours etc. too? ;-)
To a small degree, yes. Being Welsh, I have been at the receiving end of a good deal of "racism" from English people. While it is not to the same degree, I do know what is like.
The UK - Ireland thing is crazy too.As if protestants and catholics wouldn't be both christians, but anyway, the world is a fucked up place and I'm a realist.I don't glorify japan because I like japanese video games or whatever and take the reality as it is.
That's the best way to be in this day and age. See things with your own 2 eye's and make your own decisions. Carefull, this discussion is getting a bit too sensible! :butthead: :butthead: :butthead: :butthead: Thats better!
i agree with a.snow , but again, i'm not here to evaluate your opinion .. ;-) anyway, to continue what i said earlier, if someone don't like to eat sushi , don't eat them! :smt023
Wow, this just blows my mind. To think there are places where people still act this way... I'm a white/Filippino mix, and I can tell you that maybe ONCE in my whole life have I gotten some kind racism thrown my way. The whole concept of institutional rasicm is just alien to me. Is this a common thing in other countries? I've never really travelled, been to Mexico a few times. The people there definitely weren't racist at all (maybe a little eager to please, as I was a drunken tourist with a wallet waiting to be emptied) :smt040 I would love to visit Japan, but now I don't know if I would ever want to live there.
canada isn't a place were racism is develloped . its not rare to see someone that is upset and correct someone when this last one said racist things , and its rare to see someone saying racist things , sure they still exist , like all over the world . but here , in canada, they aren't loved at all (those who are racist , sure). canada is a place of freedom and of liberty rights, and we aren't surprise when we see someone that isn't of our colors or anything else like that , because we live with them. canada welcome alot of immigrants . canada is fun. canada have free hospitals . canada love you. come to canada! this reply was made by the gouvernement of canada. :-D :smt043 :smt043 :smt043 a bit of serious, i didn't know that the japan was so rasist , that's sad i always love japan and i didn't think this countrie had a great problem and i would really love to visit this country too, that's really sad.... :smt009
