hmm I wonder if I am too harsh If I refer the japanese people are mainly narrow rather than open minded, based on what the "insights" contained in this thread ????
the country where I originated from, was once colonized by the japanese, way way long time ago, several millions of natives killed by the japanese during 4 or so years occupancy.. yet no one there (this present time anyway) hold any kind of grudge towards japs or japanese ppl.
Its very funny to think the kind of racism existed in japan now (based on what this thread indicates) exceeds what a normal average joe would imagine.

Japan is a country you would have to visit for a long time to get the full effect of the culture and video gaming introspection. I could imagine people being totally closed minded there, but i lived in Paris for 2 years and those people (Me being half greek part french american) suck they hate everyone. I hated every moment there other than my grandparents but i do believe they sucked just a tiny bit. So i wonder if it is racism or just selectiveness on the japanese part. If you are american your probably taking all their japanese women and video games so they tend to get touch about those things. :smt014 who really knows unless your japanese yourself. My question is what if you are japanese american and you spoke Japanese and you were married to a white or black girl. How would they treat you then?

Not sure which country your'e from, but a lot of those countries are notorious for hating Japan. I do agree it was attrocious what they did, but it was only a few hundred years ago that England was doing the same thing, and America killing off a whole race of Indians.

Before we moved, Me family were all born in Indonesia, where the japanese once came during the early 1940s and stayed for about 4 years, made those atrocities that claimed about 3 million or so souls, okay it was war but the 3 million lives in 4 years ?? :smt009
In Indonesia the japanese, dutch, and same for any other kind of foreigner, are treated well in big cities as well as rural areas, the whole nation do not have anything against them. japanese ppl and the japan culture thrives in indonesia, the highest number of japanese restaurants (i read on a mag) in a foreign land is in Indonesia, you could find a japanese restaurant in just about every corner in the big cities there. Kabuki performances holds regular sessions and developed quite a cult by the local population etc.
Thats why maybe japan is the no 1 foreign investor in that land since early 1980s till present time, there are japanese malls everywhere in the country, isetan, yaohan, daimaru, sogo

Well, that makes sense as Indonesia is within the Japanese sphere of economic influence. Read somewhere that Japan buys a lot of it's raw materials for manufacturing from Indonesia, and is begining to outsource jobs there.

A lot of you guys are from Eurpoe, right? Is there a lot of this type of Racism/Eliteism in European countries? What about South America (for our Brzilian members?)

Shit, you could write a thesis on this. If I ever go to graduate school....

    One note to add...
The Dutch aka The Netherland, colonized Indonesia for about 450 Years since 1600 to end of 1940. During those few hundreds years God knows how many millions of lives lost due to the hardship given by th dutch colony. Then after Indonesia gain independence and proclaimed a sovereign nation, The Netherland didnt help much in terms of economic aid or anything to that effect until now year 2004...
Still.. The dutch were not hated, not even by the elderly ppl who once suffered or experienced the colonial years, sure there are few bunch of sore ppl I suppose but nothing significant that could spark a racial hatred towards dutch who come and visit.

Maybe the indonesians are very forgiving ppl, bygones be bygones, forget bout the past and just march towards a bette future, or maybe is it because asians are tend to be calm and restraining in behavior ?

That time when me fam decides to move out, was purely due to education, better universities etc.

When you get down to it really every country has some form of prejudice for another group or country. Honestly name one that doesn’t. For the most part it's not so much race but culture or nationality. The Japanese and Koreans pretty much hate each other but their both Asian in race. A lot WWII and Vietnam vets in the US still use the term nip and gook but the majority don't really hate the entire Asian race. People just use what they can to vent their anger. It is still hatred and I'm not defending it but it's not exactly true racism. I hope everyone understands what I'm trying to get across.

Yes its what the sociologists would refer to as "LabeLLing", a labelling theory that generalise something to a commonly spoken word (not necessarily has good effect tho)

British calls all chinese looking person "Chinks", USA calls chinese looking person "Gook" "Charlie" etc

still.... the victim of such remarks would refer it as "racism" :smt042

I take offence to that, the only time I have ever used the word "chink" is in the same context as "chink in the armour"

I read somewhere that the Japanese slang term for white people/europeans basically translated to "smells of butter," becasue back in the day it was uncommon for Japanese people to use dairy products (and Europeans didn't bathe much 200 years ago.) Any truth to this?

I know all the racial slurrs for other minorities (chink, gook, spic, sand monkey, etc.) What are the slurrs for white people, from each country? I would like to know, first because it's interesting and gives more verbal ammunition to you insult vocabulary, and second if I do ever travel the world I'd like to know if I'm being called names.

The only one I know is from Mexico/South America, which is of course "Gringo," although I don't think that's really a slurr so much as a "label" (as discussed earlier.) Would be interesting to know labels, names, or insults for white people from other countries/continents/societies, like say Africa or the Middle East.

Read also somwhere that the Navajo word for white person translated into "pale face" or "ghost man" :smt043

Another one: "Haole" (pronounced HOW-LEE) from Hawaii. Not really a slurr, more of a lablel, as in "You surf like a Haole."

I was once in London's China town when some Chinese guy shouted something over to a white guy. I asked my Chinese friend what it was. He told me that it meant "Wide Eyes" He explained that it was the Chinese equivalent to the English slur "Slanty eyes" for Asians.

Same apples for 'gora' , not necessarily a slur but more of a label.

Sorry please dont take offence, that word is what most of my chinese origin friends in UK told me, what they experienced while living in the UK.
and I suppose its the commonly used word to refer chinese or slanted eyed ppl in UK, sometimes the word "chinky" is also used.
