Probably the most sensible thing anyone has said contrary to the Ouya so far. that Oton though, looks VERY promising.
Interesting to see some pics of the internals of this thing. Would be interested to see what the temps actually get up to. So very much has gone wrong with the OUYA. It's just another notch on the ol' resume for the person in charge. She consistently dodges questions with marketing BS, no real data. She claims they'll have shipped something like 20k of these things by the end of this week however the isouyashipping site shows only 30 people have received theirs. It has been out for a month but now they're saying this is a "beta launch" because they can't ship any significant number of units. Then there are the "games", of which I've seen nothing original or interesting. Blech, I could go on..
Uhrman was full of shit as usual when she claimed it was a "beta launch", just trying to cover Ouya's ass because of the bad reviews they started to get. The original Kickstarter never mentioned the Ouyas the backers would get would be anything other than retail ones (in fact, the whole retail launch idea didn't come about until later), Uhrman herself said that the hardware was "baked, it's done" in an interview so they most likely won't be doing any major changes in the next few months and besides, if they did it'd be an OpenPandora-sized screwing over of everyone who actually funded this whole comedy of errors. Just another example of Ouya's incompetence, but what'd you expect from someone who thought this graph was acceptable?
A lot of kickstarters etc have been like this. Dodges all questions, people don't get their items list goes on. I bet OUYA will drop, and people will forget about it, doubt it'd really take off by the looks of things.
Replace Cigarettes with Ouya and that's what I think the Ouya hates really want to say http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WL0r-YoCmuw
Because it definitely wouldn't be "wheres my Ouya" or even the timeless "Why do half the games in the library look worse than Hard Drivin' " You have this fetish that comes along every few months for cheap chinese junk. The Neo Geo X was garbage just like this is.
I believe the ultimate irony is that if the ouya was made by a serious company it would be the laughingstock of the entire industry and nobody would have signed up for a presale. Both QTF Dat graphs Not quite, tegra3 gets around 18k points in antutu2 while A31 much like the 6589 gets between 12k and 13k points. The R3188 however is more powerful than the tegra and on par with the exynos 4, but its just out and I only seen one stick that had it, for over $100, and it was a prototype
From what I've seen, it depends on which benchmark you run. This was the first link I found: http://www.newaydeals.com/testing-of-allwinner-quad-core-chip-a31-cpu/ I think that all-round they're pretty comparable.
There are two fundamental problems with the Ouya system. 1. Android OS. Don't get me wrong, Android is a great mobile OS, but it uses Java as it's only real programming language. It works great on phones because Java can run on just about any platform perfectly because it runs in a virtual machine, but this is not good for games. Programmers push the limits of consoles by writing low level highly optimized code specifically for their hardware. You cannot do this is java, the virtual machine adds overhead. Java is great programming language that works well to push non intensive media applications out on multiple hardware platforms, but it is not ideal for games and intensive applications when you have a specific platform. 2. generic phone hardware This hardware was not designed for what they want to do with it. It is designed to provide decent multimedia performance, but is primarily designed around low power consumption. There is a reason the big three all have custom gpu's made for their very specific platforms. I like the idea of Ouya, but to really be successful they need to modify the android OS to run native code and release an sdk for the platform. It's really the only way they could crunch real quality games out of it. It can use phone hardware for all i care if they do this, but there is better hardware out there they could choose from.
The "confidential" on the controller PCBs is interesting - that's not something you normally see on production hardware, but it's a very common marking on prototypes or engineering samples.
Dalvik is the preferred language for Android phone/tablet apps, but you can write C/C++ and assembly for it. http://developer.android.com/tools/sdk/ndk/index.html http://www.eggwall.com/2011/09/android-arm-assembly-calling-assembly.html
Only two? Haha. They're even using features from Cyanogenmod in the OS, which is still far from finished. It blows my mind that a console can be shipped with an incomplete OS. A lot of people are comparing it to the Gamestick - another droid on a stick type gaming device that was born on KS. They're both essentially the same thing. Neither ship with the Google store etc. The biggest difference is the Gamestick people are being open about things. Like, they had to delay shipping a couple of months but because they just came right out and said it they instantly look more professional than the OUYA. If you believe Uhrman's updates everyone should have their OUYA "soon". It's been a month and so far all we have is a handful of unboxings on YouTube which suspiciously all come from people who are reviewers or get a fairly high amount of hits on YT and have a following. But if you follow the not-so-regular updates from Uhrman nothings wrong! The hardware is shipping out at an amazing rate! "Feet are literally on the ground".
I'm just curios as to why people would want to play Android based games on their TV? They are basically like flash titles from the year 2000. Sure there's games like Asphalt and Need for Speed, but they are still mobile type games which get boring within 10 minutes... I know this system is meaning to be a platform for indie developers, but you're better off developing a game on PC like Team Nitronic Rush are doing with Distance. If it was developed on OUYA it'd look like Stunt Race FX. Personally I think this was a quick money grab, as even the motherboard looks like some cheaply produced MTK based phone in a box.
Well I sideload the sonic 4 episode 2 and runs very nice, now I gonna try the need for speed, dead trigger and the mame4droid to see how they work. I also love pinball and the game look nice for an android console. Shadow Gun and The Conduit look beautiful too. I want now the Pier Solar for the OUYA so watermelon team I'm looking forward.
