I guess I'm the only one who likes the design of the fat systems better. I have owned 3 PSones, 2 slim ps2s, and will probably own a ps3 slim... but I always seem to go back to the old fat models. There's something about their designs which look better. Personally, the PSone was horrible... very nintendo with the purple theme going on, and while small can be "cool", the fact it looked more like a portable CD player made it seem insignificant. And while the PS2 slim was alright, I wasnt a fan of the flip lid dvd drive which fung out at light speed in the verticle position. Also, the slims dvd drives constantly went bad on me.. very cheap product. While the slim looks good for the PS3 (from what I've seen) there's a sense of majesty that the original has about it that the slim misses. Maybe it's the width, or the paint job, or the size, but smaller variations rarely "do it" for me and they don't feel like you're really getting your money's worth.
By simply removing the PSU, they eliminate a good chunk of heat from the system. I might get one. Only thing I hope they fix is silence. The current PS3 gets loud due to the heat build up. Hopefully that's taken care of in the redesigned version. I went from the slim to the fat PS2 due to the HDD. something I feel I should have done long ago .
I just went the other way, I only seem to use SMS now for streaming movies and the pstwo is quieter. I might try usbloader, but I can't remember the last time I played a ps2 game anyway.
Yeah, I'm split down the middle on power supplies. On the one hand, it's nice to be able to just pick up a PSU and plug it in if mine happens to fail. On the other, I really like standardized power plugs and can easily do the maintanence of replacing an internal PSU (unless my shit is under warranty, then I won't and will be forced to wait for a repair...) Since I don't have much experience with the redesigns, what is the reliability track record of the PSOne and PSTwo? I had a PSOne for awhile, but then gave it to a friend so he could play DDR. Are the PSTwo lasers more reliable?
Yes. Both those stock photo's are for the slim unit. Voice of reason to the rescue. Also the whole 20/20 hindsight thing. Looking back on an original design you can find more efficient usage of space, features intended for future use that decidedly won't be used, etc., and re-design accordingly. -ud
No, it is slot. It just is simplified. Apparently no touch buttons, they use 'normal' ones, etc. HDD loads from the front.
no touch? indeed the poor man's PS3. I actually like the solid design of the existing model. A shame that they're phasing it out so soon.
I've only ever used the actual buttons on the PS3 once, just to turn it on. Huzzah for remote controls and being lazy.
Try playing Bomberman Ultra on PS3, and the need for the power button becomes obvious. You will need it to reset the PS3 every goddamn 15 minutes because the game froze on you. The PS button will do nothing so you need to resetting the PS3 by holding down the power button is our only option.
I've been hearing rumors that when the slim system launches it might be bundled with Madden 2010. Sure not my choice of a game, but I'm sure it would sell systems. The fact that a EA game would be bundled with the system also does give another reason for Activision to be bitching at Sony.
