Judging by the picture (and by my memory of seeing similar pictures somewhere else), I think these are all gambling games of some sort that were confiscated and destroyed for some reason.
These pictures are from ... *drummroll* ... my parents basement. Bought that Galaxian cabinet around 12-14 years ago for what would now amount to ~25 EUR from a local pub, monitor was broken and it was as beat up as you see it now, but you could still "play" without picture. In my endless naivity I thought I'd be able to fix it with my limited electronic skills - didn't work out, as you can see. I guess I'll convert it into a MAME cabinett one day, until then it'll hold those staples of wood and collect some more dust.
Speaking for Virtua Boy at the first post here is an interesting story I read from a member at 1up about how he saved a Virtua Boy from being tossed away which of course he got free ( http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3181471 ):
Please don't convert an original Galaxian cab into a Mame cab. I'm sure you could sell that to a collector and bag a Mame cab with the profit you made. The side art looks to be in great condition
Just thinking about the number of games I've had ruined that way gets my blood boiling. I've had at least two sellers ship collector's editions - you know the kind that come in flimsy cardboard boxes - in envelopes. This one goofball outfit called "Gamebreakerz" (oh the irony of that name) packed my grossly overpriced Street Fighter IV PS3 CE in an envelope - predictably the box arrived crushed. I called them and complained. "We shipped them all that way, and haven't had any other complaints". After explaining that I was a collector, and that this, being a collector's edition, the condition of the box was, more than usual, pretty damned important. I sent them photos of the damage, and finally got them to acknowledge their mistake, but they wouldn't cross-ship the replacement, and they wouldn't pay for my return postage. So I ate the cost of the return postage and when I got my replacement, it was very well packed, but they had just grabbed a pre-damaged one off the shelf so it was worse than the first, but perfectly preserved in bubble-wrap. When I complained again, the seller went completely psycho and accused me of fraud and every other scam in the book. More recently, I ordered the EU version of the FFXIV to get the different box and bonus items, and ShopTo.net sent that damn thing in an envelope. The box was pulverized inside its own shrink-wrap. It was a truly awful thing to see. To their credit they shipped a replacement armored with about 4 inches of bubble-wrap all the way around, and it arrived in perfect condition. I makes me wonder what is wrong with people who do these kinds of things.
It's the kind of people who deal mostly with games in DVD cases. When one oddity comes along, the low-paid packers (who don't give a crap anyway) just treat it the same way as any other game.
No joke. I've got plenty of war stories in that area. Probably the worst offenders are cartridge based games in wonderfully preserved cardboard boxes that get shipped in envelopes. Or (more understandably, but frustrating nonetheless) sealed CD based games shipped in envelopes, so it's still sealed, but the jewelcase is cracked. Thanks, guys. Oh, and I just remembered: one time I had a trade going w/ some guy for some boxed Famicom Rockman games and when it came time for him to send me my stuff (after I'd sent him his) he sent the games inside a box with a few wads of crumpled paper. The games weren't wrapped in paper, just in the box with a few balls of paper to roll around with during shipping (about 50% of the box was open air), a Rockman maraca, if you will. I wonder if you can get your money back from PayPal on auction based stuff by claiming "item not as described" as it's truly the fault of the seller, not the shipping agency. -ud
I usually end up over-packing and over-spending on shipping just so something even remotely special gets there exactly how I sent it. It's amazing sometimes what people get away with in bubble envelopes...
This is true. I hate spending $100 on a game that is listed "New In Package, Perfect Condition" just to have it arrive in my mail box inside of a paper envelope and a cracked jewel case. When i mail stuff out i usually use a usps flat rate box one size big and use a lot of news paper or bubble wrap if i have it. also if its a disk, i will put something inside the jewel case so that the disk doesn't come loose and knock around inside. you usually do get what you pay for though. I bought a GBA and GCN-GBA player off shopgoodwill.com. the auction ended at $5 so i thought i had hit the jackpot. They ended up charging me $14 shipping which pissed me off. But when it arrives i realized why shipping was so expensive. someone meticulously warped each piece and packed in in a big fluffy box filled with foam packing nuggets. Well worth $14. k. i'll stop ranting now.
Sorry for the bump, but I saw this auction and immediately thought of this thread:- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...jMFtjHsjyo1E%3D&viewitem=&hash=item256237c6e3 Not the sellers fault at all and I commend them for describing it accurately, but still just look at it! ...At least it can be recased.
I can't begin to imagine what the rest of the poor bastard's house if their kid did that to a GBASP. I've seen some pretty horrific things done to consoles but thankfully it's mainly been stickers that peel off easily/with a bit of help. The Japanese "White" Saturn earlier in the thread likely will benefit from some retro-brite, though I can't say the same for those sun damaged games. Poor Kaze no Regret...
Since the auction has ended I thought it might be good to quote the seller before the auction disappears:-
For Satan's sake, I hope never to have kids - just for the risk of getting one like that one. I mean, holy fuck; that is horrendous, Geneva-convention worthy, fuckery.
Have you ever worried that you might accidentally press the cartridge eject button on the SNES? Well worry no more with this super awesome mod that makes everything clearer!:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUPER-NINTENDO-CONSOLE-2-CONTROLLERS-SNES-FAULTY-/180645423826
