So, i've upgraded a few XBox's for folks using a certain 7200 RPM Western Digital IDE hard drive that seems to work pretty good. I've been using IDE because they are CHEAP, but yes, I know I can use a SATA and use an adapter. But I need to make a few bigger ones since my Xbox Rom library alone is 235GB now, so for a soft modded xbox: which 500gb and 1TB hard drives to you guys like using the most? anything good of any type that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
Yep, most guys seem to be using chimp to accomplish this. I picked up an already softmodded 500gb and my buddy has a 1TB softmodded. I do think a chip is the way to go however, I have one chipped Xbox I got back in the day and my buddy has 3. They've been easier to work on by far. I've recently started looking into which chip to get that is fairly easy to solder in place. I used to do PS1's back in the day but that was an easy 7 wire solder job. The Xbox one's i'm finding look a little daunting. Wonder what the guys here like to use?
Has nothing to do with chimp. The last few versions of NKPatcher support the onboard partition table, the only requirement is you use XBPartitioner to format the extra partitions. (XBP, will write the partition table to the hdd & NKPatcher will read it) If you haven't guessed NKPatcher is the softmod patcher, that patches the kernel in memory allowing all the cool features of a softmod.
Awesome, thanks for clarification. That explains why the ones I've seen who've used chimp talked about partitioning their hard drives afterwards. Any preferred 500gb or above drives you like?
My preference always will be to do a TSOP flash or modchip install. Softmods that break without a backup generally need a modchip to be fixed unless times have changed (and you have your EEPROM dump I suppose). For me I have a 750gb Seagate that was pulled from an old server with an IDE->SATA adapter. Works wonderfully.
As general rule it's always better to use 5900rpm (or lower) HDDs in consoles, media players etc. Avoid any "green" drives though - you don't want to get 3-5 sec freeze in games each time that drive wants to spin up from sleep mode. If you see a HDD with anything related to NAS on the label - it's the one you want, those drives are usually designed to run constantly without any sleep timers (it's hard to use something like hdparm -B 254 on console or player).
Funny part is most threads I find all say the xecuter chip is easiest to install, most reliable..etc etc and..can't find them anywhere. Is alladin the only way to go? More and more it seems like the old xbox support is dying. Followed a few links given for AID, all dead. Everyone moving over to the 360 or PC? or these type of emulated inspired mods just dying all together?
I had tried that exact link and every time I download it, then go to unzip it I get a message that the "archive is corrupt" and there's nothing in the file to unzip. Thanks though
i'm using winrar, perhaps thats the problem and yes, I had both parts. Thanks, I'll try again tonight with 7zip...once I get 7zip downloaded of course..lol.
I wonder what the heck i'm doing wrong then? thanks for checking for me, I really appreciate it. Are people doing the same with the 360? now, emulators and such? It's just so nice to pick up an old xbox for $20 to $40 and hook up friends and family. It's just that i'm out of chipped xbox's and trying to learn how to do softmod HDD upgrades now. May chip but seems like everyone favorite xecuter chip is gone so no idea what the easiest chip to solder is nowadays. I'll download both again tonight and see if they open.
Tell you what, i'll make it easier for you. I'll extract it, zip it, and upload to mega.co.nz. I'll edit this post when it's done.
No problem. Decided to just make a new post instead of editing previous. I ended up sticking it in my dropbox, simply because mega.co.nz was not playing nice lol. So, let me know when you've downloaded it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/v409n3xbw3khcud/Auto-Installer.Deluxe.v4.53.Xbox-Hq.zip?dl=0
Downloading now kind sir, will report when complete. Again; I really appreciate the help and you can bet im going to make back-ups..of the backups on this!
