Ok, so Natal has just been officially announced and I'm sure no-one can share any real technical details without breaking several NDAs. But how does the PS Eye compare technically to what M$ showed off today? The Natal demonstration really was incredible and an excellent way to show off the new technology. I'm really interested in what the Eye could potentially do, and why Sony aren't doing it.
They have demos for this on ps3 release. They had almost the same thing as MS but AFAIK it has no depth perception.
From a first point of view i found that very interesting & amusing.. But givin it a second thought though i was sad because of what will happen to ninty if the natal project goes well.
So we're saying that both the Natal and Eye are very advanced cameras/mics that could offer similarly interactive gameplay experiences. However, the PS Eye has been used for what? Video chat over PSN and a sodding Magic the Gathering style money-eating CCG. Sony haven't exactly capitilised on the potential for the Eye in any way. Whereas M$ get Peter Molyneux(!) and Steven Spielberg(!!) to demonstrate really incredible interactivity and a glimpse of the future. It may be a peripheral this generation, but I think we can all see where this is heading.
you can't compare those two, sony ps eye is years behind compared to project natal. but then again ps eye costs what, $30? natal will be expensive. microsoft hinted at revolutionary showcase at e3 conference, and they delivered.
Didn't have any time at all yesterday to look at stuff so I have just caught up now. Project Natal looks amazing! If they can introduce it into certain genre of games rather than just gimmicky titles I will definitely be keeping an eye on it.
The original Live vision camera supported a few games, like Totem-ball, for Eye-toy-like interaction. That sucked, I have it, and I use it as a PC webcam.. I got the PSEye in hope that it will be used for something awesome, like importing 3D models into LBP - although it turned out to be just stickers..great. Project Natal seems promising, especially what Peter showed off with Milo, but I m hoping for more than just gimmicky novelty gameplay. Milo isn't a game, it's an interactive life-sim of sorts. Also, if I could use the Natal on the PC to contol windows 7 and get rid of my mouse, then fuck yeah!
Project Natal looks amazing and from what i seen of it on the MS conference it looks to be less of a silly/gimicky peripheral and does seem more serious. If it can do the following several things when released then i'm sure it can do well: 1. Work alongside a controller i.e. not become a replacement for the controler. 2. Not just focus on casual but also hardcore games which take use of its technology . 3. Make full use of the technology in games and not just have it as an added extra in certain games which makes them worse 4.Be able to easily use it with windows OS and compatible windows games It is excellent looking but i think untill its actually released and/or we start seeing more of it then right now its only good in theory and the few demos we've seen.
PS3's motion controller tech demo impressed me more than what I've heard of MS's Natal thing. I think motion controls are a fun separate genre of game, but they have to be that and that's why I sold my Wii waaaay back. I can't stand it if every single fucking game has to have motion controls. They have their place though.
Funny how today seems to have evened that equation out. I find the whole facial recognition auto log-on and hands-free dash navigation quite cool. But couldn't the Eye do that with the correct software? I think this is the one area where hands free will really work. As I said in the E3 thread, I still think that people need something tangible to hold on to (in most circumstances). With Natal you could, say, just use any toy gun that you had laying around. But if you're going to be holding something anyway, surely it's better to hold something that's going to increase the accuracy and give true 1:1 feedback. Especially as we saw how the PS3 can turn the 3mote into golf clubs, comedy swords, whatever on-screen. We also need to consider the controls in games like FPSs. How are you going to move your character around? This isn't a Holodeck we're talking about here! You still need something in your hand with an analogue stick/d-pad for some sort of in-game control of your character's movements on the x and z axes (y axis is sorted - it can see you jump). I'm not taking any sides in this Natal vs Eye/3mote combo discussion. I'm just interested in the potential of each system. I'll make my mind up when both products hit retail with some actual software.
