Sony's presentation was shit, but the technology might be more of a true Wii killer. It'll have the ps3 graphics to go along with true 1:1 response to your movements, as well as a wand/dildo controller to hold for added input. The natal stuff was much more grand in scope, but you have to wonder how much of that actually gets realized this generation.
Natal will probably end up on the next XBox. That is my feeling about it. Developers have not yet got dev kits, the cost of the device is insane and the next Xbox is not far around the corner. Basically Microsoft are doing a Nintendo and exciting us on current hardware but saving it for the next. Also, the tech demos are not real. It's like when Sony showed us the first videos of the PS3. Kinda. Barc0de: how would you type or click without a keyboard and mouse? 1 day without them would be the last day without them, I bet.
"All in all, I found Project Natal to be quite refreshing. It's nowhere near the gimmicky device I originally took it for and the fact that it works already on a retail Xbox 360 (Burnout was running on an "out of the store" model, no debugs or special systems required) says a lot about its current stage of development."
1. Work alongside a controller i.e. not become a replacement for the controler. Im hoping for this. i.e. go give voice/hand signal commands to a squad to stop, move out, point to cover etc, while still using the controller to move your character. They could have the enemy AI hear your voice and give your positions away, so you use hand signals for stealth.
I don't see either of these things taking off very much (not into "wii killer" territory at least.) Peripherals like this usually aren't very successful. There really isn't much incentive for publishers to develop specifically for it either until it gets a significant user base. The 360 is already 4 years into it's lifespan, it's got maybe another 4 before being phased out completely, not much time to get a decent user base and library going. Kinda late to launch a major peripheral that's going to change the whole natrue of gaming, don't you think? I bet however that in the next round of console wars due in 2 or 3 years, each one will have something like this built in.
have you seen microsoft conference? they explicitly said that because of natal - they won't have to release new system safe to say that we won't see 360 successor for a few years (since natal will probably come out next year). ps.and I liked sony motion controller, of course not as much as natal but it was decent. as far as advanced technology goes - wii motion plus suddenly seems like the worst off the bunch
Natal was cool, and had some great ideas (IF it can be done. The demo was just a marketing blip to sell the idea, not the fully working product). However, I still need a physical controller with the motion crud. FPS are the most popular style game, especially for XBOX. I can't walk forward, or move my camera to look around and such with just Natal. At least with the Eye + remote, this would be feasible. I'd be able to jump around (if i wanted to... clue.. i don't) the room and dodge shit in my living room, but i'd be able to actually control complex games other than stuff like simple racing games. All in all, I don't think either one will be the beginning of a new era in gaming. However, I do think that.. obviously, Sony has the better approach. Sure, the presentation wasn't as polished, but then again, I saw it in action without pre recorded footage or "puppetiers" in the background manipulating what you saw on screen like Natal. So at the very least, I feel a bit more confident what Sony is saying they'll be able to do, they can do. That and the physics on some of those items (like the lightsaber whip) were really well done for early tech. Don't mean to gang up on the Natal or anything.. again, good ideas. I just don't think it's enough to make regular gamers (ie: not cloth shopping teens, and happy get together family session gamers) put down their controller for good. Also as a personal opinion, Microsoft can add this thing all they want, but it won't make the system current and up to date for years to come. This isn't portable hardware we're talking about. Consoles need to be more with the times. I kinda wish one company did the motion and the other didn't. That way we could see which game plan would work the best in the end. Unfortunately, everyone just seems to be jumping on the Wii bandwagon and ruining their previous, and perfectly fine, system's image.
I think one day Milo will become self-aware and kill us all. It will be a mix between Hal and Skynet.
why all the fuzz about a fucking motion thingy. Jesus I think this motion capture thingy is just a rip off . And also a "virtual reality 2". Since it seems to me, this video game playing generation is not allowed to sit on their arses and just playing the games. Please God give me a Cherry 2000 , then I will be doing a fucking workout, which is fun. And also I think if Creative were even more creative with their webcams (which they actually are even with my webcam), they could make a NATAL with the camera and a microphone. But hey that is just me in a nuttshell .
If natal is anywhere as accurate as they want us to believe, I imagine "pinching" your fingers in mid-air could simulate a clicking effect or something. As for the keyboard, there have been keyboard-less keybards before, them with the laser layout, although I m not really sure how they work -but they function just fine. Obviously this is just wishful thinking, i m one of those people who stick to what they know and use for the most part, resisting change as much as possible  It could have some potential in 3D cad applications perhaps though, rotating your model etc.
Some things to consider.. (and maybe we will hear more after e3).. Milo was being shown behind closed doors, the 2 tech demoes were actually being played on stage... as well as NXE interface interaction.. (The video was more of a what could possibly be done). Sonys tech was also obviously being played in real time on stage... Both of these products are quite far along... and both will suceed or fail based on price and developer adoption of the concepts.. what good is it if there is no soft ware to fully make use of the tech.. and judging by some of the third party "stuff" released on the Wii.. how willing are developers going to be to invest time to create good games that use these features to their fullest.. just something i was thinking about..
According to this Engadget article, Natal is based on 3DV Systems' ZCam. M$ acquired the company and used the technology in Natal. Check out the link for the original ZCam brochure.
They said that, but it is BS. They still can't even build the XB360 properly, so expecting it to survive even more years is fool hardy. Also, devs have specs for the next machine and alpha hardware has been shown already.
It's better, but there are still plenty of RRoD apparently. It is the only thing stopping me buying another one.
