Hi guys again sorry to bother but im having trouble using popstarter to play ps1 games through the ps2 harddrive. I have all the corect files and partitions like _common and _.POPS. All the vcds are in _.POPS partition. When i try to launch them i get a long blackscreen and then it goes back the ps2 browser. I can see the emu trying to load cause of the yellow activity light. I'v looked everywhere but can find no solution at all. I used the readme in the latest popstarer build. Have not used the latest beta build... so if anyone can help me to get it working that be great! :)

    P.s. USB works perfectly.
Also ill be updating the usb compatability list soon with the CORRECT id and all unlike before.

    Info: FAT PS2 SATA 500GB formatted with winhip 48bit. CUE2POPS 2.0.POPStarter Revision 13, WIP 05

Hmm but i have no control on how the "+" symbol shows. What can i do? Isnt the + mean that it's a user made partition? No matter what happens there is always a + at the start.

You need double "__common" not the "_common"

4.42a cannot change name into __.POPS
4.42a can change only into +__.POPS which is not correct. Use newest uLaunchELF

Then maybe rebuilt POPStarter with the last PS2SDK and last DEV9 module could fix
    this type of stuttering?

    Best regards.

kHn, like with several other developers out there, is likely staying at some older revision for various reasons. If he needs help to make his code compatible with the late SDK revisions, I wouldn't mind stepping forward to help him with that... but that is his prerogative.

Also, there is no guarantee that updating the DEV9 driver will certainly solve all performance problems. What I wrote above, is based on an assumption that the stuttering is due to the sound driver thread getting starved on CPU time due to the strain imposed by the HDD stuff.

Given that only the ATAD module needed to be patched/replaced in order for SONY software to support non-SCE disks, it is possible that POPS never used a homebrew DEV9 driver (and hence an update to the PS2SDK wouldn't do anything).

It is also possible that the thread priorities within POPS were simply not planned out properly.

I see, well maybe kHn likes take a look on it in the future for be sure.
Thank you very much sp193 for you detailed explanation.

In another way i'm thinking if making any mode or new function for slowdown the speed of the
internal HDD to MDMA 0 could help for fix some stutterings in the sound and fix some freezes...
or maybe the high speed of the internal HDD do not affects PSX games like happens in some PS2 games
which they need activate MDMA 0 in OPL/HDL?

    Best regards.

I've digged out my FREEMCBOOTed fat ps2 and updated it and its elf launcher. Now i should be ready to start testing with pops...

I read the installation text and it says

    do i really have to:
Create a partition named "__.POPS" in your PS2 HDD, large enough so you can put all your VCDs inside.

can't they run from the folder on the HD? I'm asking because i have a great amount of stuff on the HD already and i'm pretty sure i can't make a partition in it without losing all the dumped discs....

Sorry to bother you guys but I'm having trouble with this.

I have tried to play Diablo, Spyro 2 and Spyro 3 (All NTSC) off both USB and HDD and have never got it to work one time, despite the charts saying they should work fine (bar Spyro 3 with mode 01). I have all the stuff set up correctly, half the time I get to see the PS logo on startup, and then either a black screen, flashing black and red (in the case of Diablo) or getting to the Insomniac logo and freezing (Spyro games).

I don't understand I have followed all the instructions properly and they should be compatible. This is very frustrating. I hope someone here can help me out. Thanks

1 you have the folowing files?? and with the following spelling?? for internal hdd path hdd0:common\POPS\IOPRP252.IMG and in the same folder folder the POPS.ELF. a partition in the hdd called __.POPS witch hold all your vcds. also your popstarter.ELF is named for internall hdd the same name as your vcd example spyro3.ELF witch means that in your __.POPS folder their must be a game spyro3.VCD.2 if you use a usb the file needed is the POPS_IOX.PAK the IORPR252.IMG and the POPS.ELF are not neded for usb. the path name is mass:pOPS\POPS_IOX.PAK and in the same folder your vcd for example spyro3.VCD and the popstarter.ELF must be named xx.spyro3.ELF also your usb must be defragmented use defragler for this.
