I THINK the rarest thing I own now is Metal Gear 2 for MSX2, complete in box.

Softimage 3D 3.01 windows nt version

Took me a few years to find, only thing I need now is a dongle.
    softimage3.01.jpg
Here's something though, that I've couldn't get 100% info on, maybe someone can: Has 3.01 been used for resident evil 1 (1996)? The NT version is from 1996 january, and the irix's is from 1994. It's been said multiple times that it has been used for the game, but the only thing I could confirm was PowerAnimator, and that capcom did infact start using softimage for the later games, starting with 3.5 (1996 may) for RE 1.5 (1997) on irix.

Unless you want it as an artifact, the dongle is not very useful - the way the licensing worked was that the dongle just provided a serial number and you also had an associated license file that specified what parts of the program you could use, since it could be licensed on a per-module basis. Basically, you need both the dongle and the license file if you want to run it as they would have back in the day.

I actually have both the serial and the license file, so that's not really an issue.

But to use that you would need to have the specific dongle with that serial number. The dongle and license file have to match, and either half is useless without the other. Basically, it doing the same thing that the hostid did on the SGI boxes, but since NT machines don't have a hardware hostid it was provided by the dongle.

Having said that, Soft were using a rather old version of FlexLM, and there were tools to resign license files even back then.

I could say that I own one thing I really like and one rare game.

I went to Phoenix Arizona Comic-Con and got my Copy of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness autographed by voice actress Sandy Fox (Voice of Flonne, the Angel Character) and I love that, but I gotta say my rarest game is a Complete in Box copy of Tales of Phantasia for the Super Famicom. The story of the Tales game is that I went to my local family owned Retro Game Store, and I saw that they had a box of import games, I bought Tales and Final Fantasy 1-2. The only reason why I bought Tales of Phantasia was because I played Tales of Legendia. (Tales was the only game with its box, plastic seal for the cart, plastic insert and instruction booklet) So I jumped on it and bought both games. I only spent 40 dollars.

Softimage 3D 3.51 silicon graphics version

A tad sad then, but yeah, there's other ways to run software... still, waiting for my NT cd to arrive. In the meantime, let me introduce the big brother, who just got here.

Rarest think I have is either my working Atari Jaguar CD (doesn't get a lot of use unsurprisingly), or possibly the PC Engine 'Shuttle'.

I own a debug copy of Extermination for the PS2. It is a beta, AFAIK.
I cannot get it to play on real hardware or emulators no matter what. It seems to be a legit disc, japanese lettering on it, and file dates all from around 1999.
