So, I was wondering, what are the rarest and most common Xbox motherboard revisions? Maybe someone can make a list ? It sucks for me in Latvia, because the Xbox here was sold only in 2003-2005, meaning that most Xboxes bought in Latvia have a 1.6 motherboard. I have bought a couple of Xboxes locally and all of them are 1.6 versions. It would be interesting to know the rarest to most common Xbox revisions.
For retail units, 1.5 is the most rare unit. For the most common, I'd say 1.0 since I think it was the revision that was produced tje longest.
Thanks for the info. What about reliability ? Which on is the most reliable and which one is the least reliable ?
1.6 is the most common, it was produced till 2005 (most sold now-a-days). Most uncommon would certainly be 1.5.
I am also curious about this. From what I know the v1.0 is most desirable to me, but what's thought of as the best version and why? And as to the v1.5 being the rarest, would it also make it more desirable, or just harder to find? I would say v1.6 would be least desirable, though I am no expert. Not being able to flash the tsop is a big downer to me.
From what I've gathered is the 1.0 and 1.1 boards are most desirable because of their Larger TSOP chip. The 1.4 board seems to be the the "best" board parts wise, pretty much all the Power supplys work for it 1.2-1.5 Can still upgrade the ram to the 128mb and no moving or removable parts (gpu fan and usb daughterboard) thats just my opinion thought.
So is the heatsink better on the fanless GPU? Just curious, haven't looked at them aide by side. You would think a fan would be better for keeping it cool.
Least reliable is 1.0 - the clock backup cap often leaks and etches traces off the main board. Apart from that, it's a pretty reliable machine - the biggest issue is the optical drive.
Leaking clock cap happens on all boards. Only reason would be those caps on the v1.0 would be the most oldest, really about it.
Is the leaking cap also an issue with a 1.6 ? The only info about the 1.6 clock cap I could find was that it "doesn't leak" and the console can't boot without it.
It's an issue on all consoles but all my 1.4's seems to not leak and are different caps to the 1.1 and 1.0 (which have leaked badly)
Can someone post a picture where the clock cap is located on a 1.6 ? I can't seem to find any pictures online, all of the pictures I have seen are below 1.6. Thanks. EDIT : Nevermind, I found it.
1.4/1.5 have Focus encoder which is less preferred from it's Connexant counterpart. For example, I think Virtua Cop 3 still doesn't work on Focus boards(I haven't checked for a while, maybe it changed!). Maybe there are other homebrews that works less well on a Focus. Here's my order of preference of motherboard revision, from most desirable to least: 1.1 - No GPU fan, no USB daughterboard, Connexant chip and 1MB tsop, RAM mod possible 1.0 - Connexant chip and 1MB tsop, older(obscure) homebrew softwares that interface EEPRom or other hardware will work, RAM mod possible 1.2/1.3 - Both are equally desirable to me but 1.2 as the LFRAME signal still wired to the LPC port so cheapmods and older LPC modchips will work on 1.2 but not on 1.3(without risky mod), Connexant chip, RAM mod possible, 256KB TSOP 1.4 - Focus chip, LPC is properly wired, RAM mod possible, 256KB TSOP 1.5 - Focus chip, LPC port mod required to install modchip, RAM mod possible, 256KB TSOP 1.6 - Xcalibur video encoder, no flashable TSOP, RAM mod impossible, LPC port needs rebuild, Incompatible with 1.0-1.5 BIOSes. 1.6 - Xcalibur video encoder, no flashable TSOP, Hinyx RAM chips, RAM mod impossible, LPC port needs rebuild, Incompatible with 1.0-1.5 BIOSes. About power supplies, 1.0/1.1 and 1.2-1.5 have the same characteristics minus the connector that plugs into the motherboard. If you're in trouble, it's possible to take a 1.2-1.5 PSU, cut the motherboard connector and wire it directly to the motherboard power connector of a 1.0-1.1 and Vice-versa. You can also use a computer PSU with a small adaptation circuit (couple transistors and resistors) on 1.0-1.5 motherboards and it'll work just like a stock PSU. Of course you still need to mod the interface between the PSU and the motherboard. 1.6(b) use a different power supply than 1.0-1.5 and so are not interchangeable across Xbox revisions (except you can use a 1.6 PSU on a 1.6b mobo of course). It's still possible to use a computer PSU on a 1.6(b) but it'll always be ON.
Xbox revisions with sharp tsops, I have had crap loads of Xboxs & I have never had a sharp tsop. Rare in my eyes.
Virtua Cop 3 plays fine on my 1.4 board with extra RAM 1.5 boards are the rarest. Although, I've never seen SHARP TSOP.
IIRC SHARP was only used on 1.0/1.1 boards.. It's a different package to all the others. 40ish pins compared to 32 or so on most others .. they also required a higher voltage to erase and program, I think I have the datasheet here somewhere still..
After 1000+ xbox mod installs I've still never seen a 1.5 and I still don't believe it's real. Still think it was just a manufacturer defect :|
If that's the case, then the moment you will find a 1.5 will be the moment that Half Life 3 is confirmed.
