Now i understand why the sega logo is floating ! Its because the beta had some water visuals behind! Too bad they removed those artworks :/ "Yeah I recall those images from a february 95 mag," Me too In a french mag In your betas, any cartridge that have pure demonstration/techdemo materials? or they are all more-or-less finished games?
Sonic And Knuckles was never intended to be Sonic 4. It was the other half of Sonic 3 that Sonic Team didn't have time to finish for the release of the Sonic3 cart. The lock on technology was an after thought. The real Sonic 4 was announced after S&K was released but was never shown outside of Sega Japan.
Dude I know that, why all the explanation? and I remember at the time that S&K was sold as a standalone game, not an expansion, and therefore it was the fourth in the series. The number (4) is just a formality if you ask me, plus sticking numbers in new games was already getting old at that time.
Sonic and Knuckles was indeed billed as a stand alone game at the time. I remember playing a kiosk demo of Mushroom Hill zone at the local target years ago, no Sonic 3 in sight. There is also an old X-mas commercial that very much sells the lock-on technology as a sort of extra bang for your buck.
Sonic and Knuckles is no more Sonic 4 then GTA Liberty City Stories (or any of the post GTA3 games) being GTA4.
Thanks for doing this Mr.Rare And have you given dumping any more thought? I don't want to hassle you too much, but I don't wan't these games to be lost either. I imagine looking through all these ROMs would reveal some interesting info. And out of curiosity; Anyone what game holds the record for most known/released beta versions?
LCS was more like a mission pack since it had the same GTA3 worlds but new missions and vehicles. Even S&K has new levels, but made with the same engine and specifications that Sonic3 was. Pudding has eggs?h:h::lol: Must be very early alphas or something, anyway, I think you can use a MD flash cart for that, dunno...
From what I read earlier in the topic, these aren't cartridges he has. He has the binary images of the ROMs. As long as he has a backup on a harddrive and/or CD somewhere they shouldn't be as risk of being lost.
Its interesting to hear that early versions of this game exist. I know personally that every time I hook up the old 32x I will pop the Chaotix cart in (that and Virtua Fighter). Just wondering, if sonic and mighty's sprites are so simular is there a possibility that there could exist a version of chaotix (not crackers) that has sonic?
Dunno, but it appears that sonic got replaced pretty soon in development, so I dont think so... I remember Knuckles was more popular at the time, with all the extra moves and such from S&K so I wouldnt be surprised if he was taken out from the Chaotix project cuz some smartass exec said "hey, what if we gave knuckles his own game?". And with chaotix the series of spin-off sonic games with new boring types of gameplay (that still lives today) was born:-(
I meant all sonic games that try to change the gameplay by adding stuff, like everything after Chaotix and 3DBlast to the date...
I actually enjoyed Chaotix. I wouldn't band it together with the more modern crap myself, it retains a lot of the design aspects of the early Sonic games and captures a lot of the vibrancy and appeal that Sega used to have in those days.
