I used some shrink wrap, black tape should work too. Surround the LED so that the light cannot pass out the sides.
But I want the light to pass out of the side on the red and yellow ones. That's where the light pipes are! Edit: I figured I'd throw in a before/after pic (taken in the dark) too. If I could get a good pic of just the red LED lit up, I imagine it would be more dramatic, as that one seems to be brighter, but this works.
Is there anything specific about the 3 LEDs on the SD2SNES, I was considering replacing mine so they stick through the holes I drilled in the cart shell.
Does anyone else have trouble getting their SAG SD2SNES open? I think mine is sticking maybe because the paint wasn't completely dry (or at least still somewhat tacky) when it was assembled. I don't want to accidentally ruin the cart or the paint job trying to open it.
it's not because of the paint...there are 2 hidden tabs on the inside near the bottom : http://i.imgur.com/WFCpj.jpg you need to press on those while your pulling the halves apart. do one side at a time and it will open up. i held it with a cloth to protect the paint. then you can snip those tabs off if you want.
The LEDs are low current LEDs, the series resistors are picked for 2mA forward current. If you use LEDs that need more current you may have to change the resistors. I advise against it though: with standard 20mA LEDs the power consumed by the LEDs alone would amount to roughly half the power consumed by the entire sd2snes.
ikari_01 , what led type is in use with the sd2snes? When I relocated mine I had to replace the red with one of the leds I had around , I thought they where standard ones ... red works fine btw... is it possible to give me an eBay link with suitable leds? Something like this perhaps?
I was curious if there were any guesstimates on when the next wave of these amazing carts will be available for order online. I check the regular stores daily and so far, no dice =) Thank you so much!
No there are two tabs on sides that clip shell together. We do not put them together when paint is wet. We don't even use paint, we use Vinyl Coat. Its different than paint. One main difference is it dries very fast.
That's the type of red LED I used exactly. The same dealer also has them in yellow and green and they should work perfectly.
How significant is the power consumption using the SD2SNES? Would improving power efficiency with new parts in your console lead to better performance with the SD2SNES or a prolonged life of both the SD2SNES and console?
I'm also curious about this. The suggestion I've heard is that the vertical line may be made more pronounced due to the power consumption of the PowerPak in particular. (SD2SNES looks exactly like the original carts to my eyes on both the FFVI intro and Seiken Densetsu 2 endgame Flammie ride, while the PowerPak makes the vertical line much more pronounced.)
I do not claim to be knowledgeable on the subject, however it is of my opinion that if the vertical line was due to power consumption it would be solved. There is so many people in this hobby that are educated enough to know how to fix it if it was. Multiples of scenarios have been tested and retested on this theory and nothing has solved the issue. I "assume" because I don't know, that the vertical bar issue is something to do with backgrounds and how the processors interpret them, maybe an anomaly in development or a processor incapable of doing its job. Some people claim to not see the issue, and then adjust their TV's and out it comes. Could it be that the Dev tools, equipment and TV's used never showed the issue, no one would have thought to adjust the TV/monitor settings while programming a game would they? So back to the subject, the SD2SNES is an amazing piece of hardware isn't it, I'm quite happy with mine and look forward to many future developments with it.
I picked up these today when I was out they are a little different in spec, but I grabbed them anyways. Just want to check make sure they will be fine before breaking out the soldering iron. View attachment 4081
what would be the best dremel bit for cutting slots in the cartridge shell for the sd card, usb, and leds? I didn't really want to buy a dremel just to do that but it looks like that's my only option. if a cheaper method exists, i'm all ears...
Not sure any size Dremel bit is better than another. Just have to be slow and steady. The LED holes are probably better with a drill or at least a dremel or screw gun drill bit.
Just got my SAG SD2SNES the other day, overall an awesome product! I'm very pleased. I did happen to have some issues (quickly searched through the forums and didn't find anything relating to this, strangely enough) with a few games freezing, mostly fading to black without loading the next section of the game running stock from what SAG provided (firmware 0.1.4a). Best game I found to test this with was Wild Guns, although it does happen randomly with some other games (NBA Jam, Sunset Riders); it seems to produce this a large majority of the time at some point during the character selection process. I did manage to fix the problem by downgrading to 0.1.3 -- now everything that I've tested that claims to be supported seems to be running absolutely fine. A fresh copy of 0.1.4 and 0.1.4a from sd2snes.de seems to cause the same issues on my cart. Apologies if this issue is already known! Excellent work overall though! Looking forward to playing around with the SD2SNES much more.
Welp, just had my first major issue since I got it. I'm playing Dragon Quest V, farming coins at the slime race, and I got all the way up almost to 38,000 coins (it takes about an hour to get 10,000 coins legitimately). Then, after a break, I fired it up, and to my horror, the save was corrupted. Also, when the save is corrupted, this game automatically deletes it, which is not a good thing with auto-save functionality, since it wrote the deletion to the card and I'll never know now if it got corrupted on read or on write. Fortunately, I had backed up my save, but it was at around 16,000 coins, so I ended up cheating with save states in an emulator to get back to within a few hundred coins of my previous total. Edit: Oh, I should add some details. Generally before I turn off the console, I do a long reset back to the menu. Is this a good or bad idea? Anyway, from now on, I guess I'll be backing up more frequently to multiple filenames and also doing soft resets occasionally to make sure my save is okay in SRAM at least, though I guess this could still be dangerous because of auto-save, but at least I'll have a better idea of where the data's getting corrupted if it happens again. Edit #2: I might also try putting the Star Ocean SRAM fix on my SD2SNES, since I don't necessarily see any huge downside to a little more time between saving in-game and having the save copied to the card. I don't know if it could solve the problem, as for all I know it could be a freak thing, or maybe a sector of my card is going bad, but I might as well...
This exact same thing happened to me while playing FF6. Does anyone know why the save could be getting corrupted? Also, can someone link to the Star Ocean fix?
