Most of this weekend has been spent working on the Manx TT main unit. It's all up and running again, cleaned up externally and partially inside. I'm going to remove the main boards and fans towards the end of the week. However the next couple of days will be spent trying to do something with the bikes. I dashed between the garden where I was spraying Manx TT parts and also Initial D parts, to the garage where I was rebuilding the main cabinet. Too much frankly! Were it not for the fact that the conservatory needs to be returned to normal I'd be taking it a bit more slowly. Anyway, here is a video to demonstrate the unit is back up and running:
More images, and that's that until the bikes are fixed & resprayed. Front panel completely refurbished & painted. the unit complete apart from 1 floorboard, which is here but because of the Sega Hang On cab I can't put down and the map, which is the middle panel and missing. The bikes and footplates still need to be cleaned and new M8 bolts purchased to attach the bikes to the main unit. Edit* the wife is happier now, at least it's much more of a bargain than either of us initially thought looking at the rusty, sh&t covered unit that arrived in a disorganized heap last week. The faulty monitors were the last straw for my wife, so when they kicked into life without too much fuss and I decided to tackle it all weekend and give her back the conservatory things started to look up.
Discovered the issue with the 2nd bike is down to a large metal pin running through the middle of the centering mechanism. It has snapped in 2 places and will need to be reproduced. Images later. It's part number: TTR-3203-N, which was confirmed by Sega and a member on another site. Edit 2 : Ordered from Sega Amusements UK Ltd today. 24 hr delivery, so might have time to sort this in the coming days.
There is no spring in the Manx TT system. It uses a metal centering shaft, which has a massive metal stopper. The stress of 350,000+ plays shattered the rod in 2 places. However, clearly the previous owner decided it wasn't worth replacing the shaft and through thousands of extra plays the broken sections literally ground down to points. That metal shaft is meant to be one piece! Removing both bikes to clean and respray them, plus my neighbor and I replaced the centering shaft. Due to the amount of sand in the units, I guess this came from a seaside amusement arcade. A mass of parts later... Each bike consists of a metal frame and 2 fiberglass sections. Cleaned up bikes need to dry out to be sprayed.
The wife truly makes the most amazing sandwiches - nothing I ever make tastes nearly as good. I think that is the rule of sandwich making however. It'll only taste great if made by someone else. Twimfy, glad you are enjoying it. I am not sure my half arsed bumbling and stumbling about over my own feet whilst listening to Radio 4 and smacking my hands accidentally with a hammer would make great TV. h:
Currently hunting through Honda CBR '95 decals & bike graphics. I've painted a basic undercoating of red on one bike and blue on the other. Utterly boring to look at just now, so I need to think of some ways to spruce them up and make them look less like plastic toys and more like Honda CBRs.
This amount of painting has taken hours and hours, lots of rub downs (the bikes, not me!) and several cans of paint. The silver paint is Hammerite Hammer Silver, which is great! In 3 coats it acts as primer, paint and lacquer in one can. It's given a fantastic finish.
They look awesome that's a really nice job. Time to head down to Halfords and stand in the forbidden Hoody section with the youths drooling over 50 Inch diameter tail pipes made of tin and kit kat wrappers and grab some decals.
Thanks! Decals are far hard to select than I thought. Most that are available are either really crap, skulls & death related ones or full kits for racing bikes with fairings, pan decals and sponsorship decals. I just wanted something a bit better than 'Honda' and the 'wings' logo. I thought it would be easy to find background stickers as the CBR range went on for years.
looks great. I actually managed to find an arcade moderately close to me with one of these machines. I didn't bother playing it though since they had a great ITG2 machine and a naomi cab with mvc2
You should check the centering mechanism in the other bike aswell while its off the cab. who knows how long till that thing gives out too.
Sega Spares in the UK have run out of these centering shafts, so have put them on back order from Japan. It should take 4-6 weeks before they are available. In the mean time I am leaving that mechanism well alone. Old saying 'what ain't broke, don't fix!' It will be replaced though as I am sure the other shaft must be in pretty poor condition. It's not currently broken to such an extent that the bike cannot right itself though.
As an Ikea flat pack I was trying to assemble once stated in it's instructions "you must be two people to assemble this item". This is a pig to reassemble on your own!
