I wonder if one could put a clock circuit in a controller and have it automatically correct it.

1994 -> 2014 correction circuit in controller concept:

Low power clock + low power logic (could be anything cheap and low power in the nanoamphour

Power on sense, timed wait for the clock correct screen to pop up.

Small program to correct the time, varying on location (Do EU saturn units do month first or day?)

month up/down input +/- 11, right input for next field, correct the date up/down input for +/- 1-30, right input next field, correct year(currently up input 20 times), save, exit and then reset command abcstart

Chip then disables. I don't know if the controller port voltage drops out in reset, if it does it would make it more complex compared to just sensing for 5v as a trigger for the circuit.

So six lines and one for voltage sense plus circuit power. I suppose it would be best to use the wireless controllers as they have 2x AA batteries.

Mind you I am probably inaccurate in some aspects of this and power consumption would be the goal, which might up the costs.

A button cell could power the circuit for 4-5 years

Even if this was a good idea, which I am not so sure about. Why would you put it in the controller? Just put it in the console and add some batteries inside the case. But if you are doing that, may as well just put a much larger battery in the saturn and not worry about it.

now to do the saft battery would i just need to solder wire on both ends of battery and solder the wires were the normal battery goes? I have never done this before. I have changed out my dreamcast batteries for a battery holder for easy change later.

Damn... the thing is set for more than a year with a new battery... why bother... ¬¬

And the Saturn already have a battery holder.. it's not really like the Dreamcast you know...

Because some of us have a lot of saturn systems and it's problem on all of them.

And what? Totally make sense setting up all the clocks and not using the save feature at all...

I mean, if you want to "use" some of them, why the clock is more important than the memory.

If it's not a special collectible Saturn, you can wire it to the board. I'd use some sort of easy disconnect.

If you have a special Saturn, get a soda can and cut two discs out. Solder the wires the them and then sandwich some epoxy in between ensuring the correct thickness is attained and use it in the stock battery holder.

It's a pain given the saturn's design. Saturn is also the first system to have games change according to the date and time (xmas nights, etc)

I just got a "for parts" US Saturn today (which works perfectly fine so I don't know why he said it was non-working). In the battery bay was a CR2032 with the little ribbon still in place. I yanked it out, tested it out, and the time/date was still saved after the console was powered off for awhile. I don't know how the battery could still be alive after all these years. I had the same discovery with another US Saturn a few months ago.

I have Donkey Kong for GB, a few FC carts with batteries - saves are still here. For some games it's almost 30 years.

I think they are rated at 10+ years shelf life to 90% capacity, so if they were completely off load they might last for a very long time.

Bumping an old thread here, but this is a cool mod, so shoot me.
I managed to grab a SAFT LSH 20 battery off ebay for £10. Put it into a D size battery holder, sealed in heatshrink and soldered it in. It was extremely hard to find somewhere to put the battery inside the console. I managed to squeeze it in where the power supply usually sits, but only because I replaced it with a picoPSU. It's a tight fit, but i'll never have to replace the battery again for a LONG time.

I like this and surprised I've never bothered to do it myself.

Ok here's the final layout of all the modifications done to my Saturn. This is literally the only place I could fit the battery, which meant I had to move the picoPSU to the other side. Those 4 SMD capacitors on the picoPSU get VERY hot too, so I dropped a small heatsink on top of them.
