Guess they figured the colorful buttons wouldn't be received well by the US market. Too colorful, looks like a toy, not serious enough, etc.

Haha holy crap, he must've been kidding when he called the Super Famicom a "bag of bread"... I think it's one of Nintendo's most appealing designs but to each his own I guess :)

I can't see myself paying more than $50 for this, which will never happen because scalpers will immediately buy them and try to sell them for the same cost as a Playstation 4

MottZilla, thanks for the link and got to say that "bag of bread" comment made me chuckle somewhat.. :D

Haha. Funny to hear from the individual behind such a widely criticized design.
I wonder if there's a silent majority that agrees that the US design is totally rad, or if that guy is just deluded.

I like the US SNES console design just fine plus the cartridge end labels are very nice to have. However I don't care for the Purple & Light Blue controller color scheme and wish they would have kept the colorful buttons. I don't know if I have an opinion on the concave Y and X and convex B and A buttons. Never really bothered me either way. The SFC console design doesn't bother me either. I don't dislike it, but I do dislike the cartridges not having end labels. I think the SFC's power and reset switches look nicer. But I like the SNES's eject button better since it blends in nicer.

Interestingly, the guy who designed the SNES, Lance Barr, also designed the SNES 2/SFC Jr. I think the redesign was a major improvement. I like the design of the SFC carts a lot more than the US SNES carts, though having top labels is nice.

The super famicom design was nice and colorful, but at the time would look bizzare in the American market. I never was a fan of the purple buttons but it worked for what it was.

They should've kept the colored buttons cause it really did help simplify things doing color association. Now the carts for the super famicom looked very stylish and had proper grips on the side. On the other hand snes carts felt more durable and tough and stacked a lot easier than sfc carts.

I'm glad Nintendo decided to go the one design for all route starting with the 64. More practical approach than different design.

I always liked the SNES US design. Not sure why people always hate on it. Looked futuristic and powerful at the time.

I was sad to hear him throw shade on the Neo Geo design. The unit itself is too fragile but the look has received almost universal love from fans. Not true of all the NGCD models.

I wonder how long it will be before someone takes the Star Fox 2 ROM out of this thing and starts making repro carts of the final Star Fox 2 game...

Hopefully not long because that's all I want this for. Couldn't care less about the entire concept on a SNES mini since I own a SFC with all the games I want.

I'd have to disagree personally. The SFC Mini/SNES JR design is awkward and cheap looking. I always disliked that design growing up.
My only issue with the US SNES design is the colors really. Though I do love the SFC design too.

Both cartridges are equally as good too, though the top labels give the edge imo. Now if only there would've been a hybrid design of the two.

I did balk at the comment about the Neo Geo design however, that thing is beautiful and as is the design for the arcade units. That red cabinet and art is unforgettable.

It's a matter of taste. The system is very light - it's so light that you can easily lift the entire system by the cartridge. I like its compactness. I also just like the design of the SNES 2; I prefer the more curved look as opposed to the boxiness of the original SNES. As I said, it's just a matter of taste. I do think the SFC Jr. looks better than the SNES 2.

I think the US SNES carts look pretty terrible. Again, very boxy, and a lot of games had pretty bad cover art, especially compared to the SFC versions.

It's worth noting that I didn't own an SNES until several years after they had stopped producing it. I played on my friends' systems some (my friend had an SNES 2), but not nearly as much as other systems. So, by the time I had my own system, it was already "obsolete", but not old enough to be really valuable like SNES stuff is now. I think I had played SNES games in emulators some before I had my own system.

Yeah me too. Especially because as long as people are making repros anyway, they'd might as well be repros of the complete version of the game.

Anyone able to identify in this hands on vid, if the StarFox 2 ROM is indeed something different than what we already have?

    It's...different, a bit.
Different Title Screen, debug functions disabled, official translation, different font. Even the copyright is different, as for the game itself, it doesn't really seem that different, I guess we'll have to wait 'til next month

It's less different than some of the older footage from CES, but there are definite differences from the leaked ROM. The title screen logo yes, but also the character portraits are totally redrawn/different at the bottom and have a materializing in effect. The map screen is the same old one and not the more interesting CES one. I guess it got scrapped.
