So i got a saturn, now i need games, recomend!

  1. While it may be fun to do the drooling Japanese fanboy thing and eschew US releases completely, the fact of the matter is that A) You'll find a good deal of US release for pretty cheap at places like thrift stores, pawn shops, retro game stores, etc. and B) they're all in a language that you understand.
You're far more likely to find US releases locally, while Japanese releases will mostly come from eBay. Some of them can be found a few dollars cheaper than US versions, but factor in shipping from Japan, and you'll most likely end up paying the same price, if not a little more.

The cases are big and bulky, yes, but a collection of them definately looks pretty neat on a shelf. Also, while they DO tend to break easier than normal jewel cases, they don't seem to be as insanely fragile as PAL Dreamcast or original Japanese PSX games, which seem to break when a sharp glance is thrown at them. So assuming you don't manhandle your games, the larger cases should be fine.

As far as case art goes, you can constantly bring up Mega Man 2 and Mobile Light Force if you REALLY feel you need to make that argument, but the fact remains that few releases of the Saturn era (or even the current era) share that sort of horrendous design. Yes, the majority of US case art is DIFFERENT from the Japanese art, but they aren't the horrors that everyone makes them out to be.

While I'm not saying that you SHOULDN'T go for Japanese releases if you want to, the reasons you listed for avoiding US releases falls under the same petty elitism as people who - for example - hate Sony and then go on to proclaim that every single PSX release of all ever is irrefutable crap. Break the cycle of ignorance! Be a true collector, where regions don't matter! :-D

Exactly. You don't really play the box art anyhow (of course I say that and then go crazy when my games don't have the boxes:rolleyes: ), I guess it would matter if you were displaying them or something though. Is there any how to get replacement cases for Saturn games?

  3. I usally just buy a bulk of cheap, shitty sport games and switch the cases. There's also a few sites that sell them for about 4 dollars a piece but I can't remember any of their names.

this is why I hate PAL/US titles...
I keep their cases in the separate box and just keep their disc in std cd jewel case for the convenience...

for the source the best bet would be if you ever see any of crap titles in the bargain bin grab as many as you can as long as their case are intact... I did similar a while ago for PAL DC cases with bunch of cheapo sports titles picked up from local shop when they were closing down...

What's with the PAL Dreamcast games? The ones here are just regular jewel cases.

don't you mean the 'VCD card', not the 'Movie card'? Knowing that its called that might help find it. As far as recomendations, other then ebay I would have no idea, as thats the only place I buy saturn stuff anymore (pawn shops and flea markets never carry any good saturn items for some reason).

movie card/vcd card/mpeg card is country specific so you need JPN card for JPN saturn and PAL card for PAL saturn.. of course you can use ARP4-1 to bypass that...

    2.
you will need US one as it doesn't require the pre-paid keycard to use unless you have JVC dev modem cart for JPN...

I don't find most american games appealing. I am, however, a huge fan of Sega's NFL 2K2 on Dreamcast. But if I look at my humble collection, I could say 95% of my post-Atari games are Japanese made (thought most of them are the american releases).

I'm not really a fanboy, though, I'll try everything once. That's what it should be, I think. The problem is that most american made games simply aren't within my tastes.

And for Saturn, while I don't have one, I know there are many more great japanese releases than there are american releases. It's simply a matter of convenience.
Most of the great console games are made in Japan. You'll have to buy games by japanese companies, and sometimes you'll seem biased.
I think there's no way around it if you like Shooters and RPGs - which is where the Saturn shines.
Now that, and going on an Import-Frenzy, are very different matters. If something has an american release, it's good to get it, because it's cheaper, and... well, Japanese is fucking hard to read. Japanese games can be great to study the language, though. Sometimes they have voiceover and they read over a Kanji, so you learn how it's read, then work out its meaning by context.

ok other question my saturn collection of games is mainly racers

whats a good rpg for it, and also VR Racing is not all bad, i think they could have done so much better

i mean it has the tracks and cars, just if they had spent more time making it look better, and less blocky, but still i like it

    :)

Yes I do. It's actually for learning English but it works the other way around too apart from youcan't do the "study" section but you can play the game in a way that teaches you Japanese.

Nah, Virtual Racing on the Saturn is crap. The Mega Drive one is more fun ! The best version is the 32X. That kicks arse !! The Saturn one is heavly americanised too. Probably because it was by Time Warner. It's also region free or at least the PAL version is.

'Shining Force 3' if you like strategy RPGs.
'Dragon Force' if you like menu-driven strategy RPGs.
'Shining the Holy Ark' for a first person RPG.
'Shining Wisdom' for an action RPG.
'Albert Odysse' for a traditional RPG
'Panzer Dragoon Saga' for a unique (and graphicly/artisticly rich) RPG.

(I feel like im splitting the term RPG into too many catagories, but oh well)

Thanks, ill look into it :)
