They are leaving console gaming, they aren't the next day they are. What's going on here? I don't see any credible sites reporting this rumor it's mostly places like Rocket News and Go Nintendo saying Sega is done with consoles to concentrate on making unplayable shit on phones. I also heard it was just Sega of America that was going Mobile only. SO what's really going on here? Anybody know?
I think the bigger question is: At this point, does anybody care? (No but seriously, in my mind Sega has been dead since shortly after the death of the Dreamcast. A lumbering husk of their former glory on a mission to destroy their own legacy).
They still crap out a good game here and there. I know Yakuza 5 is still coming stateside. There have been a handful of good sonic games. Project Diva is fun. They only Published Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax but that game was still fun for what it is.
As opposed to making unplayable shit on consoles. Sega of Japan is still making a new Yakuza game, so they're not quitting yet. I've actually wondered how badly the Nintendo exclusive deal hurt Sega, since Sonic Boom and Lost World bombed hard.
Sega of Japan still make the bulk of everything that comes out (that doesn't get localized...) and are doing pretty well at home and in Asia. It will pretty much remain untouched. Sega of America is in the midst of a pretty big restructure allegedly geared towards "corporate and administrative cut-backs" and moving offices out of their famous building in San Francisco to a cheaper tax region in Southern CA. Sega is a powerful cerberus with 3 arrogant heads. If they worked together and charged on, they would do remarkably well. But they continue to bite each other even after all this time. Call it an unawareness about dishonoring eastern corporate hierarchy structures, or stupid company politics, and short-sighted budgets. All leads to the same road.
They also said does not affect current projects in the works. So whatever they had in development for consoles still come out. Atlus I think will continue to do what they do as Atlus is treated as a separate thing.
I thought Sonic Boom was the last game on it? That has literally been going on for over 20 years. Pretty much ever since the Genesis succeeded in the US and the MD didn't in Japan, SOA has tried to run the show to the explicit hate of SOJ. From the 32X (developed by SOA because they didn't know how long the Saturn was delayed for) to the failed deal with Sony (which, from what I've read, was shot down by SOJ despite the support of SOA), to killing the Saturn (done by SOA alone, and the Saturn got games for another few years in Japan), the two Segas on the opposite sides of the Pacific have butted heads over seemingly everything.
As far as I remember they didn't specifically say they're stopping console production, more like they're focusing on mobile games I think. I think it's because Kingdom Conquest actually made Sega more money than Sonic Boom.
Only thing that's getting me hyped these days from Sega land is the yakuza series, Shame. Sucks seeing something you grew up with slowly destroying it's image And it's not like Yakuza 5 is going to sell millions when it gets released in the west (being realistic here), but i'll do my damn best to shill it
I'm buying it, Dead Souls and 4 Binary Domain should have sold better than it did. It was like Gears of War, but it wasn't like Gears of war.
The whole videogame market is upside down, many studios and developers (both big and small) are heaving great difficulties selling their games. Basically SEGA is doing what they have been doing since exiting the hardware market, being smart and acting on the constantly changing market. Mobile and tablet games are now 'the' big thing in videogames world, so it's a good thing that they give those platforms the attention it deserves. In the meanwhile for us 'real' gamers there will still be enough SEGA releases on consoles and PC to keep us going.
Ahh. That is quite a big if, sir. Now for my if: if only Binary Domain would have sold well here in the states...
Even if they keep making nice console games in Japan, how many of them are localized? Almost none. Latest Yakuza games would never been localized if it wasn't for Sony (one of the rare cases where Sony did something really good). It's a matter of luck that we will see Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai 2 in America and Europe. [h=1][/h]
