The only way I'd go back to their games is if they released a sequel to Valkyria Chronicles, Skies of Arcadia, or Shenmue(or hell, even Jet Set Radio) Until' then, good day sega, I do not care.
Yeah, it looks so similar to like 8 other games. At least Inversion had the sideways wordmark to stand out. That's the thing that ticks me off about a lot of these Japanese companies. They make the games for Japan, then refuse to localize them for the US and Europe, which are much larger markets. And then, surprise surprise, THEY'RE LOSING MONEY!
It seems like Sega is finally kind of figuring out that people in the West want a lot of the quirky JP titles. Project Diva sold quite well from what I understand.
This era is a golden opportunity for Sega to get ahead of their old competition, what with all the speculation about game consoles and platforms soon becoming a thing of the past as the many forms of tech continue to creep towards a more unified, versatile, modular type of platform. At the moment, Sega is not tied to any specific platform (that it doesn't want to tie itself to at least), and it has more than enough AAA IPs. It also probably helps their case that some of these IPs have stayed dormant for a long time... Remember when they tried to revive Golden Axe a few years back? No? Well, if you do (sorry if I gave anyone flashbacks), imagine if people actually bought it enough for them to revive Streets of Rage or Shinobi in the same manner. All they really lack are the right people for the job. EDIT: Glassdoor has some interesting employee feedback on SoA's internal politics: http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/SEGA-of-America-Reviews-E4174.htm
I sure Hope consoles don't be come a thing of the past. The Day that happens is the day I stop gaming. I wish Streets of Rage would make a comeback, All that Streets of Rage Remake, that Sega Europe got it's panties in a bunch about did was just make me and probably others pine more for the real thing, Was that revived Golden Axe reallY THAT bad?
Not all quirky JP titles are equal in the minds of the buying public. Hatsune Miku is inexplicably popular enough to appear in car commercials and even made an appearance on David Letterman of all places. The new Shinobi on 3DS was good, though. And to be brutally honest, nobody really gives a shit about Sega's old games like Out Run, Golden Axe or Streets of Rage anymore. Even Nintendo's C-list franchises like Kid Icarus and F-Zero probably have more name recognition these days thanks to Smash Bros. and the like. The time to make new games out of those IPs was a decade or more ago, but Sega has squandered them in a way that they have even lost their nostalgia value in the eyes of the general public.
At this point i would be happy if i could get OutRun 2006 Coast to Coast back on Steam. But it seems i'll keep playing the PS2 port for a long time.
GodofHardcore, yeah, it's pretty bad. This, I'm glad to hear. True, but people do like arcade-style racing games, beat-em-ups, and hopping on the Retro HD fusion bandwagon. IPs can rebound and adapt: Pac-Man went through some weird phases in the 90s. Mortal Kombat was a joke for a little over 10 years. It took a lot, but it managed to turn around from something truly awful (Special Forces) into something fantastic like MK9. Street Fighter went 10 years between 3rd Strike and IV. Anything in between is a port, remake, or EX. These are more notable franchises of course, but they were all far from grace at some point or another. The right people, the right clout, and the right presentation could even have something like Q-Bert or Alex Kidd back in style if they took up the challenge.
I don't know which game I love more, Outrun (including 2 and SP) or Ridge Racer. It's neck in neck with me. Sega and Namco have worked together before........................................... Any Outrun like Ridge Racer will stomp unbounded from a few years back.
If Sega wasn't completely clueless, they would've done that long ago. Probably the only good move they've made in a long time was giving a job to the guy who ended up remaking Sonic CD; they had a chance to make new 2D Sonic games with a great engine, but instead they gave the Sonic 4 name to another shitty Dimps Sonic. There are more people out there who Sega could've hired to resurrect some IPs (because the people still making games for Sega are not worth a damn except for the Yakuza team), but they chose to let them rot until it was too late.
I also like Ridge Racer. The PS1 games have so much charm (even to this day) and i'm a big fan of RRV on the PS2, even though it's gets so much hate because the lack of antialiasing. I still need to find a good copy of RR7 though. Might even get it if it's a platinum / GH release, don't mind it really. It's sad to see how both Namco and Sega look like today comparing to how they were during the 90's. Talking about Sega, just imagine something like OutRun 2 with a huge map and add multiplayer to it. Forza Horizon 2 can be considered the current OutRun since Sega is so dumb to actually bother.
There's a bucket list race in an F40 which could be considered a tribute to Turbo OutRun (no 80s Testarossa in the game, though). Other than that, I don't really see the resemblance: both great games but very different.
Very true, but the thing is they've got a goldmine of titles that could be brought over with normally minimal work to a very happy US customer base. I'm very pleased with the 3D Classics series, for awhile I was worried that was going to stay in Japan as well.
Yeah, if anything I'd see the Forza Horizon games as a successor to Test Drive Unlimited, open world racing games. Outrun is about as non-open world as you get.
If it's similar to the most recent ones, I'm not sure that I want to see a new one. The series started to go downhill starting with VF4, I think. If they made a game more akin to VF3 or VF2 but with modern graphics, that would be awesome - but that seems rather unlikely. Admittedly though, if they release a new one I'll probably buy it anyway.
At least the PC version was released in a pre-Steamworks era, so you can still get a physical copy. GT6 has something that looks like it could possibly be fun? Wow.
