Maybe, but to argue that current day Sega is remotely in the same league as 1st party Sega is just silly. Sure, they publish some good games thanks primarily to Platinum Games (who wouldn't exactly be publisherless in a world wherein Sega did not exist anymore), but Sega is pretty decisively mediocre when it comes to what they actually put out. Their output during the Dreamcast era was legendary almost, but afterwards they had a few gasps of greatness left, and then it was straight to mediocrity.
The only reason this latest effort could possibly be hailed a success is because it caters to both sides of the Sonic fan scene, or at least from what I've seen based on the footage release so far: Classic elements (such as the early period Sonic design and featuring of reworked stages from the original 16-bit trilogy) presented in a 2D perspective will surely please the fans who've felt alienated by more recent efforts, while on the other hand being able to play as the contemporary version of Sonic in a fully three-dimensional representation of vintage levels is guaranteed to satisfy those who prefer their camera to require manual adjustment every five seconds, not to mention the god-awful floaty physics... sorry, my intention to remain impartial throughout this observation couldn't possibly last! Despite my obvious concerns there will still be plenty of unresolved issues - mostly the result of "New Sonic Team" getting its way in many aspects of the game's direction - and no doubt a resurrection of the Sonic cycle discussion yet again further down the line regardless of many promising not to mention that in regard to this game, would anyone forgive a jaded cynic for cautiously wanting to believe the hype this time around? My fear is that after so many half successes and outright total failures, Sonic may not survive another complete disaster. As always, I guess that all we can really do in the end is just wait to see how things play out.
Ok just watched this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqX21sshCHI&feature=player_embedded#at=35 And I'm totally sold. Even if it plays like crap I don't care. They've got the nostalgia spot on and I'll buy it for that alone. As possibly this forums biggest Sonic fan (I will contest that to the grave) this is the first Sonic game I've looked forward to since SA2 10 years ago. I'm even going to be buying a next gen console for it. My biggest question is though...after this...what will they do. This is undoubtedly their last chance and if they get it right it will also be their peak.
Admittedly, it looks really good, but I will never, ever get excited about a Sonic game before release and reviews anymore.
as long as sonic stays in ball form after coming off a ramp then im excited for this game and looks like classic sonic will stay in ball after coming off a ramp i can live with homing attack this is sonic 20th birthday they better get this right sadly i have the feeling sonic team will go back to shitty sonic games and more sonic on rails after this sigh alls i really want is for sega to stop fucking up sonic legacy sonic adventure 2 to sonic riders has been nothing but complete garbage
This does look like it could be a bit special but I've been stung with Sonic games before and am always wary now. Did quite enjoy Sonic Colours on the Wii though.
It really looks like Colors 2, except with classic sonic and (for the non-bilinguals here) as it says in the video the rest of the "characters" we have enjoyed (NOT) the past 10 years. 10 years! and to think that the original 5 games, the best in the series were released on just 3 years between 91 and 94! The 3D parts, again on-rails, show the problem with the series: since from heroes to today Sega has done everything to kiddify the franchise sonic has gone from being a game for all ages to be just for little kids, but they dont like the originals and lets be honest sonic isnt a hot topic anymore, pokemon took that place years ago, so there arent that many gamers of any age out there who still play sonic games, while back in 90s there was hardly anyone who hadnt play one of them. So we have this game thats a mix of the two, meant to get everyone happy and increase sales. Anyways, you know my motto: either they bring something new and with quality to the table, or they can stop raping the series. That's all.
The concept of the two sonics is a bit wonky. So one of them is 2D sonic, is he from another universe? Does he have a big attitude unlike 3D sonic? Are we going to get dialog sequences where 2D sonic talks about how much that fat cat from Sonic Adventure sucks and almost ruined the game? Kidding aside, I really like current Sega's output lately so I think they're in the right direction. I guess they just abandoned Sonic 4 episodes in favor of generations 2D though.
The new gameplay video really does look right or at least the 2D section do. The colours, speed, style, movement. Everything looks like it should do. I'm putting my money down on this one  Yakumo
7force said it best. Pray for the best, expect the worst. As I only have time to play casually these days, this looks pretty good to me (even the 3D bits). I might actually buy this one. Does Sonic 4 really suck big balls? Seems a little pricey at 800 MS points.
yah i think sonic 4 really dose suck that bad.. but only for 1 flaw when you come off a ramp in sonic 4 you instantly go into the fall animation rather then stay into the ball and be able to brush past and kill enemy's that and Hard4Games said it pretty well it focuses to much on just being a rehash of sonic 1-3 and borrowing way to much from them rather then expanding the story and taking sonic in a much more interesting direction the fan made sonic 2.5 D game was better then sonic 4
Bullshit. Sonic 4 is a good game on its merits, who cares if it isn't a carbon copy of old Sonic games? the gameplay is VERY enjoyable and everything clicks as it should (once you stop comparing to what you knew on the Genesis). 800MS points? Sure it's worth 8 dollars easily Paul. Try the demo for yourself. The later levels not included in the demo are also varied and feel different in quite a few ways. All said, it's a fun relaxing time. The end boss might be a bit on the hard side but you'll get through eventually after some practice.
I played the demo of Sonic 4 and yeah, it's pretty bad. Sluggish and frustrating physics basically kills it. The story in a Sonic game? Who fucking cares, seriously. One of the main reasons the 3D sonic games have all universally sucked is the unnecessary and shitty dialogue and an endless stream of bullshit new characters. Fuck the story, just let me run around at a high speed.
In fairness, if Nintendo released a new 2D Mario game with completely different physics and general feel to previous 2D Mario games, people would quite rightly take issue with it.
Just saw the gameplay trailer and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Probably the most stoked I've been about a Sonic game in the last decade.
They couldnt get the physics right, physics from games that ran on a 68000, a over 30 years old CPU. On a platform game thats EVERYTHING. Admit it, you never played the originals.
The physics in Sonic 4 were not the same as the original Mega drive Sonic games but that doesn't make it a shit game, just not a perfect Sonic game. I bet if the main character wasn't Sonic the game would have been received a lot better.
