Actually, I misspelled a word once when I cut a movie trailer, and no one caught it until it was released... that was much worse than this:clap::clap::clap: But still, I see the fact that people are forcusing on my misspelling as a ploy fron Nintendo to divert attention away from the subject at hand.
I think the 3DS will do just fine, and in the end I imagine it will be almost as (if not as) successful as the original DS. The issues with it now are that: 1. Nintendo still hasn't put a heavy hitter on the system, and they won't be for awhile (I don't think N64 ports count, probably Mario Kart 3D). 2. Nintendo did an awful job of getting all the features in the damn thing out there. All anyone knows is that it has glasses free 3D. But where's the mention of StreetPass or the play coins or all of that? Hell, in terms of game development, Capcom has done a better job of showing off what the 3DS can do than Nintendo has. Though I guess now we can say Capcom and Team Ninja. I think those are the two main issues. Software is the biggest one. I personally love my 3DS library right now (Steel Diver, Pilotwings Resort, SSFIV: 3D Edition, Dream Trigger 3D), but almost all of those games are a bit niche, and one is a port that isn't going to sell a new system. Regardless, once Mario Kart and a new 2D Mario come out, the 3DS will outsell everything on the market for months and those two games will outsell every game on the market for months. This is simply the way things work.
Is Nintendo working on a new 2D Mario title? The pics they've shown of the new Mario for 3DS have all been 3D, al a Galaxy. Just from listening to them, I don't get the feeling that the Big N is focusing on 2D style development for the 3DS. Icarus, Mario, etc. ect. all 3D worlds.
Me too! I think that the average person can look at the sales numbers of 2D Mario games vs. 3D Mario games and say, "Hey, wait a second... people LOVE 2D MARIO!". I'm not so sure Nintendo sees that.
It took me years to get a DS Lite, now im enjoying a very saturated market full of a wide variety of games. There just are not any games out worth investing in the 3DS, and to be honest I doubt n64 ports are going to make me jump at the system.
How would Nintendo not see that? NSMBWii and NSMB have sold almost 50 million copies worldwide combined. To put this in perspective, the Mario Galaxy games have sold about 16 million worldwide combined. Or better yet, any single New Super Mario Bros. title itself outsold both Mario Galaxy titles combined by several million. Nintendo would be insane to not have one ready by next Christmas.
At first I wanted to get one for the remake of Zelda OoT but after seeing it I'm pretty disappointed how they went with a lot more brighter colours appose to the grittier darker N64 version. Plus I've got the game already 3 times and a beautiful HD version on emu I don't think I need it again. Star Fox 64 on the other hand though....
The 3DS is not priced to move, the N thought it could get away with a big sticker like it did with the Wii but it backfired, mostly because $250 its iPhone territory. Wait until it drops to $150 and you'll see how it sells
this is the first time I m not buying a Nintendo handheld on launch in a very long time.. and there are good reasons behind it. No money, high prices, no software that appeals to me.
They are slowly dropping in price at retail and plummeting in the second hand arena here in the UK, so much so that I was tempted to buy one even though I have no interest in the system. I just think the system is far too underpowered to ever make the 3D worth investing in. 3D will only ever pull in the public when it adds to realism that next gen graphics provide. Social networking is a great way to scope out the hype beyond our niche forum. On Twitter and Facebook, everyone went nuts at launch and then after a day or two everything went quiet. Now that OOT has been announced all of the fanboys have come out of the wood work spouting "best console ever" but that aside there's not much of a fuss over the machine. Ninty will only every make it work if they completely stop producing the DS altogether and just phase the 3DS in as the only variant available. IMO the 3DS is Nintendo's Mega CD.
In the U.S the two factors killing it are game selection and price. Ds sold well here cause mario 64 ds was a decent launch title to start with and the systems price seemed fair. I mean it doesn't help that the 3ds current strong title is ssf4 which most people have played to death on 360 and ps3. Zelda might move some units, but it wont move units till the price is droped near the $150 mark. I mean here it's just more logical to get a smart phone for the same price and play emus and casual games on it full speed.
As HCK quite rightly says, people game a lot on the trains here in Tokyo. 6/10 are on PSP, 2/10 are on DS and 2/10 are on iPhone (maaaybe Android). 3D doesn't add a whole lot more to the game-on-a-train lifestyle that many people have here. They just want killer, addictive titles. Everyone is playing monster hunter or some RPG thing. Outside of Japan (i.e. my experience when I was in the UK), the PSP is a laughing stock, the DS is seen to be for kids and everyone has either an iPhone or Android for angry birds. Console gaming takes precident in the UK, with handhelds second. In Japan, I know lots of people with one or more handheld, but no TV-console game system.
Ever since it was announced I thought of it as being Nintendo's PSP Go. Doesn't feel like it's their next new handheld, it's just the DS all over again, just like the Wii was the Gamecube with a new gimmick. Kinda feels like the 32X before the Saturn was released. Something to tide you over, but it's not their next permanent console that they'll be developing on.
Wanna bet ? While I agree that a core Nintendo franchise out at the beginning would really help any system launch ( and 3DS didn't get it ), DS sales in US were brisk because it was launched during the holiday season. After the astonishing DS success very few remember that in US until DS Lite and Nintendo combo killer apps like Mario Kart DS, the system sales were kinda weak ( with GBA still going quite strong so much that NCL ordered NoA to kill it in favor of DS). EDIT: Argh, didn't see later replies.
The design of the console itself I think is so unappealing compared to the elegant and simple DSlite design. It looks.. just a bit shit really. And the games are things you can get on other console and have a better time with. No killer app. Or even anything unique...
Simply put, it's too expensive. It needs to be $149.99 and even at that price the DS lite is going to kill it.
That's because it's using negative parallax, which unfortunately (and I say that because I think it's what most people liked and remembered about 3D effects from the 80s and earlier) isn't used so much these days. Most people designing in 3D for films, TV and games use positive parallax because it causes less headaches or discomfort. but it's definately a cooler effect IMHO. This diagram: from here: http://depthbeyond.com/blog/?p=83 explains it well (the screen is the blue line, the red dot is the object being looked at in 3D). Mqark.
Funny how everyone keeps referring to the DSlite in this thread, yet there's also the DSi which is newer.
Shows you how many people are jumping to pick up a DSi the DS lite has a longer battery life which is why I got it. I think the reason why the 3DS isnt selling well has been beaten to death:gravedigging::gravedigging::gravedigging:
