Are you actually British? Her accent in Frasier is a Northern one. You can notice it in certain words - e.g. when she says asks, it's a gentle a as in apple, not the "ah" that Southerners would use.

She actually mentions Manchester in this clip:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiS_QGctFxU

Notice how she says "aah" instead of I, she says noone with an "uuh" sound, trying with an "aah" sound, Mum with a shorter u sound, a lengthened a sound in take (think Gaaaaarlic bread!).. and you'll probably notice some other subtle Northern twangs.

Her accent nowadays is "standard" English, with a hint of an American twang from being over there so long.

If you watch her Benny Hill stuff, she did accents back then. I think her real accent was standard RP, so technically Daphne's is a fake accent - but it's always sounded fairly natural to me.

I know which accent it is imitating- but it just sounds so forced, like waving a massive flag saying, 'yes, that is a 'British accent you hear', just in case there was any doubt. Either way it sounds ridiculous =)

But you get my point. When a British accent is present in Anerican shows it is usually forced and stereotypical..

Daphne's accent in Frasier was definitely suspect - it certainly never made me think of Manchester. I'd always assumed the producers made her speak that way to convey the fact she was English, in later seasons it's far less pronounced.

Surely the real question should be " Why do Americans keep fucking up the English language?"

From what I understand, the US drug laws are the draconian ones. Here in the UK you'd be amazed what you can get away with, as long as you don't take the piss or annoy the neighbours. Also, my county's Police Service has about £1.78 left in its budget, which means no copper choppers, no drug raids without blatant tip-offs, in fact not a lot of anything that actually involves real work or investigation. :smashed:

As for the current state of the English language, it's shocking really. I can't stand the 'orrible little chavs and their entire degradation of the language. Don't ever call me 'geez', 'bruv' or 'blud' and expect a pleasant reply, 'innit' is not, and never will be a proper word either. Thankfully.

Also, the English language is not alphanumeric. Sending me a text message with 'm8', 'l8r' or anything that I have to stand there and decode isn't likely to warrant a response either.

As opposed to all those other letters that are written like they sound? bee, cee, and dee for example.

Fair point but we also call it Zed which doesn't make sense either.

W is forgiven because we're naming it for its shape. Although the french and german descriptions are more accurate.

You realize there's very little consistency in what letters represent what sounds in English anyway?

Anyone other than a "Proper Scottish" person (I use the term in "" as im not trying to be racist in anyway) always seems weird with a Scottish accent to me.

I.e. people who moved there and are Chinese/Korean/African etc but their children have been born and raised there. Their children obvious end up with the Scottish accent, but it always seems weird/confusing as its not what you expect.

(This would be from an outsider view, id imagine its pretty normal to Scottish people).
