Seems a high reserve for something he paid $1 for. But yeah, probably just second chance it if he deems it high enough
I don't understand the need for a unknown reserve. When the seller wants, let say minimal $20k he can just start the auction at $20k?
Anyone have a throw away account? Bid up really high to find out the reserve price, then retract it (must do it before the final 12 hours) and re-bid to just $1 below the reserve. If no one outbids, and you get second chance'd you can decline.
Since sellers can no longer leave negative feedback just use your own account. Make a massive bid and then just retract it is you want.
I would like to know if the winning bidder (and the reserve is met) how is it explained to the wife? If married of course....
Given as it was bought for $1 any form of reserve is pretty ridiculous, especially at $12k and up. It is a very nice item well out of my price range though and I suspect the second unit will not fetch quite as much money, even if the lid works properly I can't believe I missed this thread though. I only noticed it before I went to the gym this morning and even then only because it was promoted to a story on the main page. Actually, I can believe it as I have been busy and or slacking a bit for the last few months but meh very nice find, it would be nicer still if it was dismantled to know if the top card was blanked or functional and other differences etc, but it is the owners perogative and given their clumsy nature and the soft construction, one can't blame them for keeping it closed. Also it is very sad to hear and monkfish's passing, and no, not just because he had Dee Dee Planet hiding away and I was hoping to buy, dump and release it. I think it would be very fitting if the monkfish Geist Force disc was sold to raise funds for a brain cancer charity, or at least something else monkfish himself would have supported, but alas I doubt be in the running for it this time around. Cheers for the pics though
I know for smaller everyday items, if I see a reserve price I usually won't bid in the first place. I just assume the auction will not hit the reserve and find another seller with the same item.
Final bid was $15,500.00, which didn't meet the reserve. There were two retracted bids, one for $25,000.00 and one for $35,000.00.
I can't say I blame him. That Alamo XBox controller prototype I have? Bought for $4.99+tax and I've had offers up to about $250 for it due to the fact it's supposed to be an in-house only testing controller. Mine has serial #80 or so suggesting that at least that many were made and possibly more. Given that this controller isn't nearly as rare as the Pluto I wouldn't bother putting a reserve on it but I also wouldn't bother putting it on eBay if I wanted to sell it as I'd rather sell it for less than it "could" be worth and be sure it went to a proper home. OTOH if I was particularly hard up for cash and this Pluto was mine I'd like to cover a years worth of rent or more with it if possible. Better off taking it apart, cleaning it, fixing the issue with the lid while documenting it on a blog to drum up interest. Right now all he is doing is demonstrating what it isn't worth.
Are there any similarly rare systems that have sold recently and for what price? A reserve of over $35,000 seems a little steep to me but then again I don't know much about prototype systems such as this one. The prospect of a Sega Saturn modem seems quite an interesting one I have to admit.
I can't think of anyone else I'd be willing to even consider selling it to. For now she resides heavily padded in a box where the temperature fluctuations are minimal and occasionally I admire it.
