Nvidia has to start properly supporting Windows 10. Geforce cards below the 600 series only support one Windows 10 beta driver that was released in April. Also it isn't as straight forward as it should be to find Windows 10 drivers on the Nvidia website.
That isn't the case for 600 series or newer. That's quite stupid.

I've been trying to make Linux my main OS since 2003, but have been failing pretty much because it's too broken too use.
I've used different distributions, but the underlying issues that Linux has will always eventually come back to stab me when I least expect it. Still waiting for the day when the Linux world will get their stuff together, to make one version of Linux that doesn't have issues with being so hard to configure, install software on (package-management isn't always available, dependency issues can exist and they really should stop abusing scripts) and isn't heavy. Getting the Japanese IME (which is also a 3rd party add-on) to work was also a pain... and it didn't work at all in the end.

I seriously hope that Windows 10 will turn out to be decent. My Windows 8 experience (in 2013) wasn't really pleasant because they seemed to have made it a little more "primitive" (why replace all of the on-screen options with only keyboard shortcuts that aren't explained anywhere visible?). Not really yearning for some of the new features that they're trying to sell though, as I would just like a basic OS that works well as an OS.

Aren't the drivers universal? Other than some of the really old cards, I thought that Nvidia supported most of them with their "universal driver architecture"?

I just checked the Nvidia website, and the drivers are readily available, even for the 400 and 500 series.

    ***

Not exactly related to Windows 10 itself, but I find that the new Windows 10 promotions within Windows 7 itself are getting a little out of hand.
Not only are they sticking the promotions in my face by making that system tray icon nearly always visible, Windows update no longer clearly states that there are no new updates to be installed.

Thanks for this information. I'm still with a GTX560, will have to wait a bit then.

The drivers are supposed to be universal, but I can say from my own experience that Windows 10 has some compatibility problems with cards below the 600 series ( as I mentioned earlier ). Even though it says that it supports card from 400 series and up that is not the case. As of now, the latest driver Geforce video cards older than the 600 series can support is 350.12

I think this is the case because the 400 and 500 series still use the Fermi architecture and that may be the cause of this driver incompatibility.

So what happens if you install the Windows 10 Nvidia driver, when you have a series 400 or 500 card? Will it refuse to install itself? Or does it not work right?

Surely you'd have onboard video card, so you can install your drivers with accelerated video.

It would just refuse to install the driver. But Windows 10 has a stock basic graphics driver included, so at least you could navigate your OS. Although the max resolution wasn't even 1080p and the available graphics memory was just a few megabytes, so that basically means no graphics performance.

so apparently from a tweet from MS, if you are running Win10 TP you'll get a full version for free..

Also the spying stuff is a misinterpretation of the BETA TOS apparently wind 8 and 7 TP had the same thing

They're going to need a proper opt out function. It shouldn't be up to me to go change my SSIDs and then go around and change everything else's connection settings in my house to block M$'s little hole. I'm sure as hell my university won't change everything on campus for this. We each have our own sign ins to connect to the wifi there. If anything happens, they can trace it back to us and our asses are on the hotplate. I'm maybe exaggerating right now, but fucking Microsoft.

I was reading they have been using that feature also in windows 8.1 devices such as phones. So it may just sound worse then it really will be. Will just have to wait and see how it turns out :)

Windows Phone 8.1. I don't think this was on full blown Windows 8.1 or we would have heard of it. Pretty sure why this is new to me (and many) is because no one has Windows Phone 8.1. I'm probably blowing this out of proportion. If it is a big deal though, I sense a Xbox One DRM backpedal maneuver.

It will either be full of paywall bullshit, or be ok.

Microsoft says they are now making windows as a service. So no more windows releases, just incremental upgrades.

    A big mistake really.

They will be charging no doubt for each year's "upgrades", just keeping the platform the same, IMO.

I am actually really glad I made the jump to Linux about a year ago (I think). I've attempted to move over many times in the past and had always failed. Usually it would revolve around gaming, and rebooting. I've managed to alleviate most of the issues I've had. The main thing that has helped is offloading a lot of my apps and files into the cloud. (in my case I use my own personal owncloud) and using a Windows VM with hardware passthrough (direct access to GPU for gaming and other Windows things) So if I'm working on something and need to run that one Windows app. I switch to my windows VM and then drop the file in my cloud and go on my way. Still not completely stable but it works for my strange everyday use. It looks like Windows 10 is shaping up nicely but right now for me it's a question of if I'm ready to replace my Windows 7 VM with 10. The beautiful thing about VMs is there isn't a lot stopping me from keeping multiple versions around.

I've heard Windows 10 will have an easy to use screen recording software built in. That would be really nice.
