Seriously, directed at Max Payne. Two fantastic and consistent games that went together well. A god like series in my mind and then they begin to make Max Payne 3. I haven't checked in a while on it but my question was, Why? The game is set in brazil. Completely removing the charm off the first two games. The double crossed cop in the gritty NY setting worked fine. Will it work well outside of NY. Absolutely not. Not to mention the blatantly overused by now and piss poor storyline of 'They screwed me so I'll get them back' ''Max has been double-crossed in this new city and he is searching for the truth and a way out.'' A way out from what? Why did he go there in the first place? 2 straightened everything out.
Technically, The Curse of Monkey Island could be considered one, since after the surreal ending on the second game, there wasn't any need for a sequel. I like Curse though, it's just as funny as the first two games, and the only thing that really makes it seem like an unnecessary sequel is the stupid exposition sequence near the end between Guybrush and LeChuck - they definitely could've found a better way to tie the second and third game together. Now, Escape from Monkey Island on the other hand...perfect example of an unnecessary sequel.
? Far as I know Remedy has nothing to do with Max Payne 3. Max Payne 1 & 2 were great because of Remedy. No remedy and it's just another shitty ass game.
I don't see a problem with sequels really. If a sequel is released a year and half later i guess it's normal. The biggest problem these days, IMO, is to have a game divided into pieces. Yes, i'm talking about DLC. Game devs should only start to think about making those after the game is launched. But what happens is that there's DLC available at the game launch! They develop the "full game" and additional content side by side, already thinking on more profit over the retail. Plus game devs that make sports games have to stop being so greedy. Apart from presentation and improved visuals / audio, there's nothing else on the "new version". Sometimes they add a new feature yes, but remove another. They should support the previous game for at least one more year with rooster updates and so on.
How about the New DMC with this Sorry ass excuse of a Dante. Emo, fag, blackhaired teenager? I mean seriously..
Pokemon The kind of people that play it may have few friends lol so red/blue was a way to extort people to buy both versions to trade amongst themself for a perfect save or game collection. Thats not so bad if the people have friends with a copy but then the ultimate pisstake off all appeared... Pokemon: Yellow. No significant difference red/blue except start off with Pikachu to cash in on the TV series. More annoyingly the TV series was there to cash in on the original game... I bought/played/never heard of the show before the pokeboom but once it took off I quickly lost interest. If anything was ever uneccesary Pokemon: Yellow was it.
What are you talking about? Monkey Island is as close as you're going to get to a video game equivalent of a comedy, it's not supposed to be logical, but to be anything but pointless, it has to be funny, something both "Curse" and "Escape" was. Atleast both of them were different gameplay wise when compared to "Revenge".
Bioshock 2 and 3 GTA is rapidly losing the point Two Worlds 2 Mafia II Lost Planet 2 Latest Front Mission
All great games do not have a necessary sequel. Look at it that way. In the same vein, sequels do not need to be necessary to be good.
Blasphemy! I actually enjoyed it. I figured it would be a game my m8 would like but he hated it. We co-op'd on it once and never again. The story is a little disjointed but in a weird way it does kinda make sense. I still put 400 hours in though. 200 campaign 200 deathmatch
Game sequels have for the most part been superior to previous games. I think BioShock is the only game in recent memory where it was such a standout storywise that a sequel just didn't seem necessary. And I think DLC is out of control as well. Marvel Vs Capcom 3 is releasing with the dlc characters already on the disc. You're paying for the unlock codes basically.
I bet the MP-3 guys want to get some of that The Elite Squad feeling to the game, but it will fail 'cause gritty NYC cop crap doesn't even approaches what happens at Brazil. Seriously, most cop dramas are Sesame Street-grade kiddie stuff compared to BOPE Anyways, my take on unnecessary sequels: Every Sonic game after SA2 (or even S&K if you're hardcore) Nights JoD All those dumb GTA clones featuring peabrain rappers (seriously, one was enough, and considering every single one is the same piece of putrid shit each one should be considered a sequel of the last). Most FFs after VII, specially VIII and IX Daytona CCE and 2, the first was perfect why ruin it? Virtua Fighter 4 HoTD 3&4 Modern Warfare 2 (fucking short and overhyped too) Halo ODST and Wars (seriously, the only good thing about the RTS one were the CG cutscenes)
My copy of Street Fighter IV was the same deal IIRC. Paid a pretty penny just for 100kb unlock code for some alternative costumes =/
I disagree mostly about Grand Theft Auto. I didn't think it *had* a point until IV came about; while its detractors complained that it was less fun, I finally found a reason to play in the really deep story. Chinatown Wars hooked me for exactly the same reason. I wouldn't have gotten into the series at all if it weren't for the sequels. As far as pointless sequels go, Clockwork Knight 2 comes to mind pretty readily. In an era when game releases were less frequent and reviews weren't all over the Internet, that particular game seemed to be a textbook definition of a cash grab.
