the racing was much better on the N64. That said, it wasn't the kind of game any non-racing fan could play well, hence why they chose to simplify controls and rely more on weapons.
Trouble is, after years of playing Double Dash (which I originally hated, but grew to enjoy) and Mario Kart Wii (on the GC controller, as the Wiimote control scheme is appalling) I can't go back to Mario Kart 64. I've tried, and it feels like a slow, clunky thing when playing 4-player multiplayer. I wish they'd do expansions to the Wii version which add more classic tracks - the 16 they provide on top of the 16 new levels is just not enough! (I know that they do other classic levels in the online competitions, but it's a shame I can't add those permanently to the game).
i prefer MK64 over MKD because of just the simplicity. My biggest gripe with MK:Wii is that when you're hit you go to a direct HALT, and the weapons are so favorable towards losers it's near random to win. My first time racing, Graciano1337 brought it over, and I went to the bathroom. him and my brother started the race to get a headstart - my first was a bullet bill and I was brought to near first place and wasn't long before I pulled ahead. After they were already on their second lap. I did enjoy MKS. It's a perfect addition to MK:64, you have the weapon balance of 64, but with a touch of MKD's load out customization.
Mainly I just enjoyed the added gameplay element of the blue sparks. Without it MK64 feels dull to me.
Never beat it? Oh dear me, you gotta make some time! I knew a lot of haters of Yoshi's Island back when, but its a great game and the developers really put a lot of thought into level design and the graphics, its superb! Yoshi's story on the other hand... well, it felt like they were trying to make it for an even younger audience then before, but it was still decent. And as for Yoshi's Touch & Go... Well, I gotta make time for that myself! As for this Mario Kart discussion... This! I still think Double Dash is the best MK in recent years, the blue sparks add an even more frantic gameplay element that wasn't there in earlier MK's. And the dual riders was a nice addition as well. Mario Kart for the DS felt like Double Dash in a portable form, so this was awesome too! As for MK on the Wii.... Giant failure for me. And the SNES version? Well, it still rains king! Even just the soundtrack beats the full game on the Wii!
Wrong. What you refer to as sparks is actually the drift mechanic introduced in the n64 version. You have to shift the thumbstick left/right, left/right assuming you're drifting left, to get the orange εεεεε!! sign on the N64 version.
Ha, first of all I know all about wiggling the fuck outta that joystick, but in the N64 version? Are you sure?! I gotta check this out.
Drift boosting on the N64 version is awesome, you can damn near drift the entire of the first track alone. As for the SNES version, I don't think it's aged very well. The last time I played it last year it just felt clunky and stiff, not at all as intuitive as I once thought it did. And the track design? Waaaay too frustrating.
You never used power slides?! Damn, you must have got your arse whooped!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-uO7ZHPBeg
None of my mates at the time knew (or didn't tell me, the cheeky bastards!) edit: and yes, I did get my arse handed to me anyway. I could hold my own on the SNES game, though
Now there's a thread waiting to happen: tactics you've used before in multiplayer games that your opponent didn't know about until it was too late!
There was a manual? I had Mario Kart 64 back in the day and 2 copies of Double Dash to us on my GameCube LAN and never read the things unless I was on the throne haha
Yoshi's Island and Clockwork Knight 2 are two games I'd have to disagree with. Yoshi's Island is one of the best ever by far! Clockwork, I think I read it was originally planned that both parts were gonna be one, just like Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, but they eventually split it due to time constraints or something. I guess in that respect you can see it as them getting more money, but who knows. As a game though I liked it Speaking of Sonic & Knuckles, that was sort of unnecessary. I never thought about it back then how it uses the exact same engine and graphics style as Sonic 3, making it look like they just built a new game over their old engine so they could get something out for cash sooner. But if S3 and S&K were released as one whole game, the ROM cost probably woulda have rocketed the price, so I guess that can be forgiven. My picks now: Spyro Ritpo's Rage and Year of the Dragon - I didn't like part two at all, but generally sequels are forgivable enough, it's when they release a 3rd one that gets me, and Year of the Dragon just sucked. Plus they changed his voice. That's always a sign things are going wrong. Croc 2 - They had it advertised in the back of the manual of the first one already, so you just know they were getting ahead of themselves. Croc 2 had absolutely none of the quality gameplay of the first, it changed the style completely and felt more like accomplishing lame mini game missions over and over rather than exploring levels. Yoshi's Story - I looked forward to this one so bad when I was younger, I can't express how hyped I was for it. It's nothing like the SNES one, big failure there. Gameplay premise was dumb, collecting fruit? What were they thinking, it's not even a necessity to get them all, making it so you can get past all levels pretty damn fast. And only one level of each "world", so the game is only like 5 levels long each playthrough. They didn't live up to any expectations they themselves should have expected everyone else to be expecting
Yeah, Yoshi's Story was pretty damn lame. For that matter, Yoshi's Island 2 was pretty worthless as well.
I think all Mario Kart games are ruined by the AI. Dirty and cheap. The more the series progresses, the less forgivable it is. Super Mario Kart you could easily forgive because it was fantastic for the time. Mario Kart 64 you could forgive because it added much more to the game and it was real 3D. After that it just disgusted me. I liked Diddy Kong Racing more than Mario Kart 64.
Diddy Kong Racing was my first N64 experience and I loved it...still do. The best Mario Kart IMO is Mario Kart Advance!
