Virtua Fighter 4 if translated to Dreamcast would've required a huge downgrade. even the PS2 versions are very significantly downgraded from the arcade, the original VF4 on PS2 moreso than PS2 VF4 Evo.

NAOMI 2 had three chips dedicated to graphics compared to the Dreamcast's one.

NAOMI 2 had two PowerVR2DC / CLX2 chips each with 32 MB memory. there was also the 'ELAN' T&L geometry processor with its own 32 MB memory. Dreamcast had no equivalent of this.

NAOMI 2 could conservatively handle 10-12 million polygons per second with 6 lights per polygon. Dreamcast could do, max, 4-6 million polygons per second with 1 light per polygon. so NAOMI 2 was several times more powerful.

Gamecube and original Xbox would be able to handle close conversions of NAOMI 2 games, as seen with Gamecube's Beach Spikers. some of the lighting is lost as well as the deformable sand, but it's pretty close.

I still don't understand what the "very significant downgrades" were to VF4 on the PS2, but if AM2 concluded that a Dreamcast conversion would be too compromised I have no reason to doubt their decision - after all, we're talking about a highly talented team that opted against working on VF3tb so that they could give the Saturn two huge send offs in the shape of VF3 and Shenmue... it's just a shame neither saw the light of day in their original forms!

VF4 on the Dreamcast would probably have looked something between VF3tb and Soul Calibur in terms of graphics, but of course Yu Suzuki felt any compromises would be too much - why then did his team waste nearly a year working on the ill-fated Saturn version of VF3 when they could have done much better than Genki's treatment?

as a game designer, the decision of compromise is one of content, not volume.

Some games you can downgrade the graphics and they ll play fine, like Outrun 2.

Some games aren't well suited for downgrading - imagine trying to run Shenmue on a nintendo 64.

It's the constraints presented by each platform that propel the decision of suitability.

well, some people who worked at sega claim they had actually seen vf4 on dreamcast. They claimed that although downgraded, it was still impressive for dc.

Becasue the Saturn had a huge install base in Japan and would have made a lot of money.

come on, we all know they were making VF3 on the Saturn because Yakumo was paying them to.

Was the Dreamcast really that much of a step down from the Saturn in Japan that a conversion of VF4 would not have been financially viable? AM2 desperately wanted VF3 released in its Saturn form to silence the console's many critics, but management at Sega was more interested in pure money - it was felt a scaled down 32-bit treatment could harm sales of the imminent Dreamcast edition.

I once read a news report from back in the day that suggested AM2 was ready to offer Saturn VF3 for a third time in early 1999, though without any further improvements to the "second revision" that was officially cancelled - according to those in the know - on 17 September 1998. By this point, Yu Suzuki believed his team's jaw-dropping Saturn work could be viewed with enough distance from Genki's flawed Dreamcast version to give it a chance of success on its own. However, once again Sega didn't want to know, believing it would then be seen as a last-ditch attempt for the Saturn to share in what should have been saved for the company's newest hardware.

As for Barc0de's assumption that VF4 on the Dreamcast might have resembled Shenmue running on a Nintendo 64, I take it you've not seen the Saturn prototype footage? This game would have looked decent enough on any fifth generation system, and the Saturn is regarded by many as the most basic of such technology as you can get... commercially, at least!

Yeah, but your are forgetting that the N64 can't draw polys unless they are 10 feet wide  I've never seen anything on the N64 made of polygons that didn't look like triangle Lego. At least the Saturn could work with small polys to give tinny details. Just a shame it'S textures were so low in resolution most of the time.

You're making up stories again and presenting them as fact. Do you have any evidence to back this up?

Would this have been in the UK Saturn magazine?

Viruta fighter 3 and Shenmue on the Saturn, constantly mentioning those titles. why?

That's the trouble with unreleased games mate, they get a mythical status and would have been the best thing ever, system saver ect.. but when they finially get dumped on the whole it's a bit of a let down as the titles fail to live upto the hype.

I don't know really. I love Proppeller Arena while others thought it wasn't close to the hype. To me it was everything I expected it to be  I think some people just expect too much.
