knowing that the original DOA was intended for the Saturn (later released also on PSX), was there an arcade version of it on a Saturn-based or Model series? also is there DOA3 or even 4 (Lindbergh?) on the arcades?

Because both Tekken and of course Virtua Fighter surpass its fighting system. Virtua Fighter has more balance and depth to it, making it extremly challanging. I'm not saying that DoA is fireworks all the way, but it's more looks than substance I guess.

Dead or Alive was originally released on Sega's Model 2 board and featured 3D backgrounds. It was the first non Sega title for the system and it was that version that got ported to Sega Saturn. It had to be downgraded of course, so 3D backgrounds were cut and multiple layer bitmap backgrounds were used instead.

Dead or Alive did get an upgrade [aside from various Model 2 revisions. Game appeared on 2A and 2B boards]. The game was remade using different hardware. Characters got remodelled and the 3D backgrounds were scratched. This version got ported to PlayStation and feautered different soundtrack than the Saturn one. In its arcade form it's known as Dead or Alive ++.

The hardware DoA++ was released on is a JAMMA board that appears to be a customized version of Namco's System 11.

Fighting Vipers made great use of walls, long before the DoA series.

Yea, so did Fighters Megamix [very creative with the bouncy lines]. But that was just hitting someone against the wall, and eventually breaking it if the last hit in the round sent your oponent towards the wall. That's all good stuff.

But it's 2006 now and Lindbergh hardware is no Saturn and no Xbox either.

DOA and DOA2 are fine. The problem started with DOA3.

Another series that i like is Bloody Roar. I have the first one, but already played with the 2nd, and it's good too. Don't know about the 3rd and 4th, because i never had the chance to play those.

Fighting Vipers is cool mostly because those damn walls and the armor thing. Never played Fighters Megamix though.
