Was the Xbox originally going to be an 'X' box?

I was a senior in High School, he was a sophomore. But honestly, even the other sophomores knew that. He's asked it in class, was told "no" and I guess he needed it from what he would consider the horses mouth. We tried cutting him off to save him some embarrassment but he wouldn't listen...

I can't imagine what happened to him having 35 students and also the teachers false palm at the same time...everyone did kind look at him, look down and shake their head.

    One thing about the controller:
It wasn't part of the sidewinder controller lineup from Microsoft, but it was released as a 3DFX-branded peripheral, actually called 3DFX "Hammerhead" FX.
(also sold unter the InterAct brand, they were actually making the thing)
It was always as far as I remember molded in smoke clear plastic, there was also a non-transparent version without the rumble that was only sold unter the InterAct label (the FX at the end of the name denoted the rumble version).

Yeah, this is well known. Have a look further back into the MS section and you'll find details of the Microsoft Xbox Alpha and prototypes, including the Hammerhead controller.

OE used to have some, and I think Kev either had some or was selling some off a year or two ago.

The Hammerhead also sported a green X logo on it, but I cannot remember whether it shipped with the Alpha or not, I do believe it did for development usage, but only as a temporary measure as it was USB and they'd have realised at MS where the Xbox was going controller wise.

The Alpha even has a 3D model of the Duke style controller in Dash.

Great, I love these Devkits - even if they were "PCs in disguise" (more or less).
The chrome miditower looks kinda cool, though I normally hate any kind of bling on my machines.
Somehow I always remember the Nvidia PingPong and Butterfly demos when thinking about early xbox announcements, were they linked to the original Box demonstrations, or were they part of the then-current launch-buzz of the Geforce cards?

Only thing I need to pick up to do ideal video capture would be an svideo adapter for my cord, otherwise I have my nice DSLR that can do 720p at 30fps and 1080p at 20fps. Plenty for off-screen stuff, but Id prefer to use my capture card obviously :p

I personally think the alpha kit was sexy, it is my dream to acquire one of these some day. That and a 360 XeDK

Anyone know if the specs on the alpha kit differed greatly from the other ones?

You could try making one if you really want :p. I remember reading through a thread that was on here(I think). It was about and individual buying the same computer parts that compose an alpha development kit in attempt to essentially recreate one. If I recall, it actually ended up working, and the parts weren't all that hard to get ahold of.

Otherwise, a few months ago I saw one of these alpha kits go for something like $32.50 on ebay because nobody but one person bid on it. I don't think anyone knew what it was ;P.

Getting a genuine one sounds nice, but I'd be interested in that thread of the home made one :)
