I've got a few ideas. First and foremost the average person has no idea about collecting anything or what goes into it. However if you walk into anywhere that deals in coins as a serious thing you'll find that the expensive ones have been graded and that the grading does in fact influence value. I know the argument of 'games are meant to be played, not put onto a shelf inside an acrylic case' is thrown out regularly but you can say exactly the same thing about money...for the most part. I've never been to Europe but I'm pretty sure I can't spend the Lira or Francs I still own nor would any bank in the US be willing to convert them into the USD. In this case the coins in question are now purely for aesthetics and collecting purposes as well as piece of historical interest.

The average person can clearly see that it is true, grading and sealing up a coin protects it's value and even can increase it, sometimes considerably. Aside from tarnishing issues (where cleaning any coin is a great way to destroy it's value no matter how ugly it gets) coins hold up extremely well over time physically. Video games will eventually become unplayable by virtue of discs falling apart or cartridges having batteries leak, contacts corrode, etc. Placing them inside an acrylic case will only prevent any examination of the goods. Look at some of Jackson Pollock's works where he put paint directly onto canvas(?) and it slowly eats away at the canvas. Every so often preservationists remove the paint from the backing and place it into a new medium all in the name of keeping it in one piece. Video games will probably have to undergo similar processes but at some point discs will all degrade to the point where only reproductions of them (or more likely emulations with reproduction controllers) are usable. Cartridges will last considerably longer but I don't see anyone actually playing original Edison wax cylinders in a museum to anyone for any reason.

The acrylic cases are viewed as a sign of "this is actually a high quality product and must be worth something". Anyone worth their salt can spot the fallacy here but the average person doesn't because they were never taught to think in such terms. If I haven't made it apparent I too think the whole VGA grading thing is at least (currently) a waste of money. For sake of arguement let's say they do raise the value and that they are worthwhile. What happens to Super Mario RPG's value when someone puts it through a MRI in 20 years and finds that the battery leaked and caused enough damage to the PCB to render the game unplayable. What does the value become then?

And if you think that's hyperbole think again. There's a store down the street that specializes in collectibles of all sorts (I saw baby Ewok soap in there from the early 80s) and he knows a guy who bought an unopened box of some sort of action figure. The numbers on the outside of the box indicated mixed messages about the contents so they took it somewhere to get X-Rayed. IIRC it was the local hospital and it cost upwards of $200.

Would love to see one of these come up for auction just to see what it would go for. Might be the best version of the game graphics wise.

Im not sure if it's rare but the Steel Battalion Controller (which you need to play the game with) is pretty expensive now. Im not sure i want to see the price when Xbox starts becoming popular. Glad i got one now.

It's not that rare, it appears often. It's only the shipping costs which ruins the chances of getting one.

Sure are lucky! Yeah, that's the other issue isn't it? I haven't seen the set in person, but it does look huge.

I don't have a camera with me but it's about 3 feet long. so you need a long enough table and you need room underneath the table for the foot pedals. But it comes in 4 peices so it's easier to store then to set up.

Nope, I see a new one pop up on eBay daily. It's just the huge BIN prices you see that makes everyone think theirs is worth more.

Complete with the map is where it can get tricky, but honestly the game shouldn't go for any more than $50 complete.

Conker is rare? If that's true, then I'm never giving it up! But really, I only paid $5 USD for it at a thrift shop. Surprisingly, it's in near mint condition. Virtually no visible scratches on the disc, manual is in perfect condition, the case is still in great shape, and it still has a trace of that "new Xbox game smell" I used to enjoy when buying a new game back in 2003-07 (oh, how I miss those days...)

My rarest game would be GunGriffon: Allied Strike. It was really hard to come by, and I had to do some diligent searching to get it. Well, I could have ordered it on eBay, but I wanted to find a local copy of it.

Other rare finds were Japanese imports of Whacked!, Brute Force and Blinx, which I also found at the same thrift store. They were cheap, so I snatched them up.

The only other NTSC titles I have I'd consider rare are Gun Valkyrie (because I never see it anymore), Combat Task Force 121, and Warpath which is kinda rare.

    Shogun.

Just like Morrowind, Conker is NOT rare. They pop up extremely often, it's one of those games where people don't want to sell less than $50 (in Australia). Expensive doesn't mean rare, it's just a valuable game.

A lot of Japanese XBOX games are not extremely rare as many state - Probably the only one that's kinda rare is the big box N.U.D.E.

So I really want to clear that up as the message of "expensive" doesn't make a game rare. I've been following Xbox titles for long enough to notice which I see more of compared to games I barely see any of.

I swear BIN prices for most Original Xbox games in Australia are ridiculous. I picked a game up I hadn't heard of before not too long ago called Tron 2.0: Killer App for $1 complete at Vinnies. Because I hadn't heard of the game I checked it's price on eBay and found it for AU $39.95 BIN. Unfortunately buying locally is out of the question for me. The local "retro" gaming store only stocks shit sports games for consoles like the PS1 and Xbox. Can't believe people think that shit will actually move...

With the xbox games they are only worth what somebody wants to pay , like one day they can sell for £1.00 and the next £6.00 just depends whom is looking and bidding at the time.
    same with most games really.
i have gotten xbox games on carboot sales for 10p each.
like people with high buy it now prices you will notice they will stay on there forever.

TBH i think the consoles and promo stuff on xbox are the rarest.

speacking of which i found some promo flyers for the xbox glossy folding A4 conkers and a few others also scarface A4 lithographs that were given out when you bought the game by blockbuster.

Well every game has a range if prices, no matter the platform, and yard sales / car boots don't really count towards the general market hah. Certain games certainly command a higher price, and there is no denying that :)

That pretty much applies to everything used. However the usual sale price determines the value, and if it's actually paid for.

That's true. The value of a product is determined by the most commonly paid price at the time. That's why BIN is a problem for collectors who are buying. Prices go up because BIN products that sell set the benchmark.
