North Korea's ideology is rooted like the Stalinist cult of personality during his reign of the Soviet Union. The Soviet's though were lucky in that he never groomed family for succession.

I wouldn't say that. You'd be surprised how many none Americans are on this forum. It's about 50% none American members :) many people here don't even speak English as their first language.

So if America knew Japan was coming to attack Pearl Harbor, that makes the attack okay? Stupid.

    We were English then, commie.

One could say the same thing about arranging the attack on the Lucitania as far as Pearl Harbor goes. Arranging an attack just means neither side was justified.

That's rather interesting though. In my area people were under the assumption that the historic whitewash was applied long ago and recently lifted, but apparently it's the other way around (mostly). We have a large Filipino community here, so you can imagine their take on the war ;*) Neither set of schoolbooks seems to cover them.

Arranging is a strong word. Really strong... and wrong, I would say.

Basically most of the rest of Asia hates Japan, and with ample reason. America's never been such an asshole on that scale in the history of the cuntry. We're really bitching about Apples & Oranges.

But anyway, yeah. I wouldn't expect any history book to be totally accurate, but Japan is noticeably more cheeky about it.

You are implying that losing the war was a bad thing for Germany. Germany lost the war. It was good thing for the world & for Germany that Germany lost the war.

I mean, the loss of life is never a good thing, but the die had been cast.

Also of note might be Miyazaki's supposed final film, The Wind Rises/Kaze Tachinu, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wind_Rises) which is a historical fiction piece about the creator of a famous WWII Japanese fighter plane. I don't know if it captures Japan's current feelings of the war, but it is an interesting film and drew a lot of ire from different groups of people on different parts of the political spectrum...

I don't know where you're getting it that I think that it was a bad thing. Germany lost the war, that is fact, but thanks to what it got in the process, it went from a stagnating and almost bankrupt country to one of the most powerful countries in the world. Now in perspective of time, say that the outcome wasn't good for germany? It was a win-win situation for them

Ahh, ok, the phrasing sounded a little odd to me, that's all. :)

FWIW, I was taught about Japanese internment camps when I learned about WWII in a US school. That was ~20 years ago at this point.

    I finally saw this one.

    1) Good film, but not one I think he should finish on
    2) People need to stop being such pussies. Honestly I don't see where the contraversy came from.

Well, the right thought it portrayed war in a bad light, and the left thought it glorified war. Go figure.

Also, anti-smoking groups were pissed that kids in the movie smoked a lot.

Yes, when I went to school we learned up to WWII and part of Vietnam (Korean war was skipped) and nothing after. Nowadays, tho (and I'm sure its not the same in every school) the kids do not learn of WWII. A few years ago I knew a girl just got out of high school and didn't know who Hitler was. I wouldn't be surprised that it may be a combination of people not paying attention (learning) and the ciriculum (sic) leaving out certain details. In fact, I think I read a recent story where Japan is removing portions of their history from their text books and its causing some uproar.

Well, what a great win-win situation. They just finished paying off reparations for WWI! And they still pay the Jews whatever they want, basically.
Germany was a great country before WWI, it did not need to win so much...

On the other hand, if the whole of Europe spoke German and had one common market with a single currency and united government, that would have been much better. In that case, the history books would still laud the victors anyway ;)

I thought it decidedly dodged question entirely, summed up in a few lines.

Hmm... define "kids". They were all of legal age, AFAIK. Different times though. Don't blame the film maker.

Nah, It's waaaaaay more extreme than stalinism. Imagine if you were in Stalin times USSR and were drunk in Stalin's birthday. What would have happened? Nothing. Same in NK can lead you to prison.
And many other things will be like that. There was a cult of personality in Stalin's time, but Stalin was just a de-facto emperor, in NK country leader is treated like a living god.

Europe and even whole planet requires some old good dictatorship with smart and strong leader(s) to clean all this mess and prevent worldwide economical crisis and maybe WWIII. If things will continue to roll down as they are now, it will happen, and it won't be long.

But there's a thin line between dictatorship and tyranny. In Hitler's case that would be tyranny of a madman. He almost got it, whole world in his hands. And lost it all, because of his german superiority ideas and irrational hatred for jews and other people.

The really sad part of the whole story is that the genocide and hatred did not even play a minor role in the collapse of Hitler's Reich. The Allies had very little interest in saving the Jews and they in fact tried to ignore the whole situation for as long as possible, even stopping immigration and other things that could have helped. The Holocaust only stopped because Germany was defeated. Major extermination camps had already been running at much lower capacity or had been shut down altogether before the war entered its final phase.

The real cause of Hitler's downfall was actually the strength of the British and Red armies, preventing Germany from taking over the UK and the Sovjet Union. If either of which had occured, I think the war would've ended differently and the huge genocide would've been widely accepted and forgotten by the rest of the world, just like nobody remembers how soil soaked with blood serves as the foundation for today's Russia and China.
