HDD recorder with programming ftw. Kind of the best way to avoid shitty Japanese telly while not missing out on the quality programs.

I have one. There's still fuck all on. Since I'm too lazy to call the cable company and cancel the crappy channels I pay like 3000 yen a month I shouldn't.

Back on topic for a moment, check the link above to the first game on the DS to have a transvestite as a hero. Some people have said the first ever, but they obviously haven't noticed the thousands of PC games and a couple of Ero-Game ports that made it to the PS2.

So I think it is safe to say that Japanese women (and a solid amount of men) have had an interest in transvestites for a long time, it is just finally gone mainstream.

Soko ga Shiritai was a pretty good documentary travel show back in the day. Granted, some episodes are boring crap, but they did cover some pretty interesting stuff. Don't know if they still show re-runs of it over there, but it's still being aired on KIKU Honolulu tv.

On the panties issue. I female friend of mine worked for a weird company while she was at university in Tokyo. She had to go round with weird men to 109 or similar department stores and buy clothes as if they were for her. Obviously they were for the man and the man would choose what he wanted. She got about 8000 yen an hour! Just cos the guy was too nervous to buy clothes on his own. (or too stupid too buy clothes on the internet.) Plus especially in Shibuya I have noticed more TV on the streets, especially at the weekend. And lets be honest, Japanese Gal-O fashion and host fashion is on the cusp of being crossdressing anyway. Some of my jeans are too tight for even my girlfriend!

OT : I am actually not around at the moment. I have come back to Europe for my big bro's wedding in Italy. I will be back in Japan soon enough though. I will let you know. My girlfriend is virtually planning our wedding at the moment as well. Permanant Visa or Freedom? Difficult...

Oh, you're getting me all worked up before bed!

OT: I'm about to take a quick trip myself. Hopefully will come back a little browner than before. Good luck w/ that spousal visa stuff. Can't say that I'm a proponent of fast-forward marriages, but hey, to each their own.

Oh do not get the wrong idea! I am not talking marriage at the moment! My girlfriend is just trying to keep ME in Japan! Not the other way round.

I have plenty of other options before I resort to that. I do love her though. But still I would like to see how she copes with me for a solid year of living together before I commit.

There is a tiny part of my Christian upbringing that wants me to give marriage a bit of respect. So yeah, if I can avoid it spousal visa is not the way I would like to go. (I am rambling here - I just don't know if I am ready for what my girlfriend wants me to do)

Ahem. Anyway this is the kind of doubts and conversation that has a 3 drink minimum.

Don't get married just for the visa. They're simply not that hard to get for a native English speaking westerner. If you were from South Asia, yeah, I'd say go for it. But in your case, a shitty job will do. :)

Agreed. My modeling agency alone said they would be willing to sponsor my visa. (probably because they get a scary 40-50 of my earnings!)

As for the girlfriend, I was stupid enough to joke that getting married would be easy path to a visa. As I said it I saw a little light flash behind her eyes and she started to run with the idea! In the same way there was a little pregnancy scare a while ago and I found her flipping through a baby furniture magazine. Scary stuff! Now I am the one who is in charge of her taking her pill.

Yowza! I'm in the wrong business. I actually go scouted twice in a week, wearing shorts & T-shirt, with massive 5 o'clock shadow. One was for a specific shoot (skater stuff, so they needed the scruff) but I couldn't make it. Nagano on a week day.

I could've told you that long ago. One thing I learned in my wisdom is don't ever trust them to take it. I'm sure some will forget on purpose.

Yeah up to 50 percent is a bit much. But that seems to be more and more the norm these days in Japan. At least my account got moved from the dedicated gaijin section of the agency to the half and Japanese section, after I got a couple of good jobs. That meant that for a lot of jobs they only took about 30 percent of my income.

Still a lot of modeling agencies seem to take their cut totally randomly. My girlfriend (model and actress) never seems to sign anything and never seems to know how much she is going to be paid until after a job! She was out in Shinjuku park on a Parasol shoot for about 30 mins and raked in 30000 yen! Then another gig took the whole day for only 8000. At least both of our agency are run by women, rather than the suited fools you usually find.

As for my job I only do fashion work. Regular income comes from Cat walk and photos for fashion mags. Mostly foreign fashion magazines like "Huge". But I do a bit of Japanese fashion like "Men's Knuckle" and my proudest hour "host knuckle". Though in the latter they lied and said I was a half! And for the shot I was wearing enough make-up to be legally declared a TV a reckon!

And I am by no means beautiful. I just have a strong striking face. Models must stand out in fashion, if you are a soft faced pretty boy you are just one of many. Most models are better described as interesting or striking rather than "good looking". And it helps if you are painfully thin.

whenever I do any jobs I try and short-circuit the agency out of it. I charge 75% of the total amount that an agency would otherwise charge, saving them 25% and getting me an extra 25er. It does take some practice to know what sort of money a job is worth though (and always make sure you're a good negotiator with an understanding audience, to avoid any possible, yet unfrequent, legal entanglements)

Good stuff Barc0de. But in Japan that is not going to work. That would be like comitting model suicide, it is in my contract that I would not do that or even give my phone number to the people in charge. If I break the terms of my contract I would be right out on my arse! The agency even escort me to jobs (when they are sending a couple of models) and a representative always seems to pop up at fashion shows. Plus I always need the agency to release my pictures for my portfolio as they have rights to them... They really trap you in, in Japan. But they do treat me very well and I do get a lot of free stuff, my contract translated (into complete rubbish), a taxi account and a discount at my hairdressers.

So overall they do make up the difference in little extras here and there.
