I was thinking about this the other day, and I thought it would make an interesting thread. Which systems did you buy the day they were released? For the sake of simplicity (and to prevent ridiculously long lists) let's limit this to systems, not games. Give the story of each one, if you want. As for me, I bought the PS2, Gamecube, Game Boy Advance, and 3DS at launch. The PS2 I immediately sold for a profit (that was my plan). I played the hell out of the Gamecube (which was an indigo unit) until I spilled a cooler full of ice on it, destroying it. Luckily I had an extended warranty on it, so Best Buy gave me a new one (a black one) for free. I still have that system to this day. I also bought a controller for it (a purple one with a clear back) before the console was released, which I still have. The GBA was also very cool. I ended up selling it and getting a GBA SP, which was also very cool. The 3DS was an interesting system, but I found myself playing it less and less, so I sold it. I bought a big CRT computer monitor with the funds I received from the 3DS. You?
Same here. I worked at Toys R Us at the time and picked one up launch morning. Played it for about 2 days, then was offered $700 for it. Too good to pass up. Other than that, I make it a point to never buy launch systems.
Dreamcast and the Wii. The Dreamcast was awesome because it wasvthevlast time I think you could just casually walk in a store and pick up a launch day console. Total impulse buy and it got me back into console gaming. The Wii was mainly because a TRU had a boatload available and I am a huge Zelda fan. With so many there a midnight lineup made it feasible to get one. If you've never done a campout for a game or console, you should. They can be a blast. You meet some cool and also weird people. My launch DC was stolen when I moved from NYC. It was th only box taken! I'm still bummed I lost it.
Just been trying to remember, think i have only bought 1 console on release day (I'm quite suprised at that!) It was the original Nintendo DS - it was payday and i had money burning a hole in my pocket. Bought Mario64 DS and WarioWare DS with it, was very pleased....
I bought a Wii at launch. Mostly a waste of time and money, and it'd still be gathering dust if it wasn't for softmodding and emulators.
Sega Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 when my Mommy was so cool, she called the school and said I was sick and took me to the mall to buy it! I played Dead or Alive: Hardcore all day -- and Fighting Games are pretty low-tier on my enjoyment list! Every other game console I owned was about 1-2 years after launch :s
Nintendo Wii, and that's it. I learned the hard way with buying on launch. The system will sit there for a few months until something of interest gets released. Well that was for the Wii at least.
Xbox 360 and Wii. I still have and use both to this day. Wii for New Super Mario Bros, and 360 for Spelunky. Yes, my 360 is an original 2005 Elite unit! My PlayStation and PS2 were bought by my folks within a few months of launch. Both times were as duty-free purchases, back when that actually meant a decent discount. My GameCube was a few weeks before EB Games stopped selling them. I was able to get the console brand new for $89, and the GameBoy Player for $30. Similar story with my Xbox 1. Everything else I own console-wise was second-hand.
The systems I bought at launch are: Super Nintendo PAL launch Atari Jaguar US launch Nintendo64 US launch Sony Playstation JP lauch Xbox 360 PAL launch Edit: How could I forgot: Sega Saturn!! JP launch. Good memories...
N64 and Wii U on launch day that's about it , I usually try and wait a bit until games are released :O
Got my Gamecube (indigo) in Uruguay a couple of days before the November 18th release, with Wave Race Blue Storm, amazing Still got both and work flawlessly just as day 1.
What was the higher-tier launch unit called then? Premium, maybe? Came with the chrome drive tray, and 20GB HDD. I definitely got it on launch day though.
As close for me was my Playstation around 2 weeks after launch or so. Yea Premium I think as well, I gave mine to my Nephew and Niece. Told them when it red rings don't tell Uncle Pete lol!
none, i rarely buy consoles at launch unless there's a very special reason for getting one on lunch. consoles i got closest to launch were the N64 and the original XBOX
Grabbed a Gamecube on launch day, that was probably one of the best gaming weeks of my life, I wasn't big into Nintendo but I couldn't resist the lure of Rogue Squadron 2. Happy times. Got a Vita on launch here too as well. Loved that machine but after a few months I had no choice but to abandon it due to the sheer lack of games. The winner for me though was importing a JP PSP long before they reached UK shores, doesn't really count as a launch purchase I suppose but lying in bed opening that packaging up for the first time and lifting it out was a product experience for me that to this day has never been matched. The PSP was truly an amazing piece of hardware when it came out.
