XBMC already installed, but no original dash?

    Hi all,

Bought my softmodded xbox a few years ago. I'm unable to ftp to the console unfortunately.

What I would like to do (ideally) is format the harddrive as i'm not sure what is actually installed on the machine and then reinstall the original dashboard alongside a current version of XBMC. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to go about doing this? I've done a little research myself but all guides seem to require FTPing to the console. Any help is hugely appreciated!

It's risky formatting the hard drive if you don't even have an EEPROM backup. Why can't you FTP in to it?

I've literally no idea why I can't FTP to it.

Have tried numerous applications, just totally unable to make a connection. From what i've read attempting to fix this issue. A file somewhere has corrupted deleting the user and pass (i think?) from the xbox itself.

You did make sure the ftp functionality is actually enabled in XBMC, yes?

Or maybe boot EvoX from a CD instead, that'd also let you quickly back up the EEPROM while you're at it.

    Modchips solve all.

    It is enabled yeah.

Is there a guide to do that sorry? What would that then allow me to do?

Sorry, i've absolutely no idea what AID is?

Haha probably, although presumably that requires soldering, something which I have never done.

Auto Installer Deluxe, it's an iso you download, burn it and run it. Follow everything on screen. I even made a video about this a little while ago.

    Sounds perfect.

Have started downloading it now, have been reading the user manual for it.

Think I know what i'm doing. We'll see.

Ok, well this afternoon I attempted to use AID.

During installation it provided me with an error message and the message :. with rename written underneath.

Unfortunately this now means that my xbox is merely providing me with error code 21, i've looked at some youtube guides on how to rebuild the harddrive for it. When doing this does it just install the original dash? Or the softmod too? Is it worth just putting a bigger harddrive in now that I have got to take it out anyway.

Also, where can I download the required recovery disk?

There's some instructions and a link to download the software here.

Also a more detailed version here.

    Good luck!

Big thanks, seems like a pretty detailed guide there. Will hopefully give this a go on saturday as i've only got a laptop currently.

Just that one remaining question now sorry, once I have rebuilt the HDD using the above guide will I be using just the standard dash and have to softmod from scratch? Or will it be installed too?

i believe you can user xplorer360 to read fatx(the hdd formatting the xbox uses) within windows.......you would still need a copy of the original xboxOS C: drive files but it saves all the bother of making a bootable iso etc, once you have the drive unlocked and detected in windows delete everything from C: and copy a fresh set off the stock files on plug the hdd into the xbox and power down the console, then use one of the save exploit hacks to install AID over the fresh console

if you dont have the stuff to do the save exploit you will have to look into setting it up manually

    • If you have the save exploit then load the game up again & run it, the xbox always boots the DVD first even if there is no functioning C drive.

if your getting an error even with a game disc in then its not the software.

    game disc = legit copy.

If you have a PC with IDE, I'd rebuild the drive with that and use a new hard disk with a hardware dumped EEPROM. Since you have no modchip you won't be able to boot a recovery disc.

The Xbox will only boot by default from the hard disk, modchips boot from D:/ depending on BIOS settings, but they usually... Error 21 is a general error and simply could be anywhere, but usually relating to the dashboard. Booting a game will not work if the system has an error anywhere!

So your only bet now would be to build a hard disk from scratch, and since it's softmodded you don't have much choice other than external hardware recovery.

    Or

Get a modchip installed (I know you said you don't have soldering experience but don't forget, someone here could do it for you)

Yeah, i'm gonna rebuild the hard disk from scratch tomorrow hopefully.

Then someone I know is going to lend me a softmod kit. Getting someone to modchip may well be a better idea but i'm a cheapskate haha.

Right, sadly no luck cannot use my brothers PC to do it.

Anyone able to help me out? Maybe fit a modchip for me?

Incorrect, that's true if its a fatal error, ie hardware & an unlocked HDD.

if it's not a fatal error then you can bypass it with a game, like I stated.

error 13 (no dashboard) will only trigger if the system tries to load xboxdash.xbe & it doesn't exist, but if there is a disc present it will boot it, since it doesn't load the dashboard until after it checks for D:\default.xbe
