I forgot to mention another one of his tricks: he'd often just mail the YJ sellers cash, including the cost of international shipping, without consulting them first. This left them pretty much obligated to send the item

But yeah, absolutely a risky strategy. Personally, I always use a deputy service.

Well not really, they could keep the money and item. It's typically illegal to mail cash.

It is not illegal to mail cash. It's just not generally a good idea because it's very difficult to trace cash and there is no record of it.

That said, it is a calculated risk. I'm guessing that the OP's friend was relying on Japanese cultural ethics to work in his favor.

I would NOT suggest trying the same approach with an American or European seller. ;)

The only thing it's illegal to do w/ cash is destroy it (or of course buy illegal shit).

Stupid idea, for all sorts of reasons. The funny thing is, he'd probably have the same success rate by simply asking before bidding... and at the same time not drag every white person's name through the mud.

Well a lot of times people don't place any value on the cost of time. By using a proxy he wins 100% of the auctions and eliminates all of the emails and time spent going back and forth with the Sellers who don't cooperate. I often see the questions from foreigners asking is Sellers will ship overseas and I wonder how many hours of wasted time that took so so he could save $10 by not using a proxy.

That's because your average Japanese has about 60% of his DNA in common with a chimney.

Jimminy Fucking Christmas. That's worse than that one post a few weeks ago. O_O

And the other 40% have partial chimney DNA due to second hand smoke.

very cool item. but for a rarity, the price seems reasonable right?

For number of pieces it is what Famitsu printed in magazine at time of contest. 10 was for the election prize and 8 was for editors of magazine.
