I can't figure out why everyone thinks this thing is such a disaster. It's got a lot more/better software than the N64 had in it's first year. Mario just came out and is absolutely stellar, Icarus is coming, etc. People are expecting what...third party releases? Ha.
Well, because of... the hard and early price drops perhaps?!? the fact you rarely encounter this thing in public? Read the thread and you get an idea why people think this thing is a disaster... which does not mean that it necessarily must be true, but peoples perception of the console is a point for Nintendo to worry over while marketing. When people will think that the PS Vita will be the next big thing, they will be getting those instead, and it will be a self fulfilling prophecy... think about it.
There were tons of people bitching about the 3D screen giving them headaches, and I'm not talking about the resolution but the cheap 3D system it uses Ironically eye tracking with a webcam would be cheaper and more effective, I saw a hacked phone with that and the effect was much better, even when it had a regular screen About the battery, and if you cant charge it? I'm not talking about a bigger battery to play 8 hours straight, just something you dont have to recharge every day or else it goes black.
I think the 3DS is a great system its just that the 3rd party titles are so mediocre, with a few exceptions like street fighter. The best games for the system right now are all 1st party from nintendo. Nintendo is also concentrating too much on japan by releasing everything there first and then a few months later here. Personally I don't like the region locking as some of the best 3rd party games are going to be japan only also, like the Gundam launch title and the Hatsune Miku rhythm game.
I have no idea what you're talking about. Autostereoscopic systems that use eye-tracking still use a parallax barrier, like the 3DS. The difference is that the barrier changes with the movement of your eyes, and it's much more complicated and expensive.
Okay, I'll put this simply: that technique and the screen that the 3DS uses are completely separate things. The 3DS makes use of stereoscopy, and the phone in that video you posted does not. If you want me to explain further I will; otherwise I'll assume you understand. Now, there are actually screens that combine both technologies: head-tracking and parallax barriers. In a display like that, the slits that make up the barrier change dynamically depending on the position of your eyes. So basically, while a screen like the 3DS's requires your eyes to be in a certain, fixed position, a head-tracked parallax barrier display can theoretically be viewed from any angle. However, the technology involved is still in its infancy and is incredibly expensive. I think I read that the first such consumer display costs around $25,000. My point being that for what it is supposed to do (project separate images to each eye without glasses), there's no other economically viable way to do it (yet).
The 3DS as a 3DO? The 3DO cost way more money. The 3DO didn't have a 1st party that is Nintendo. It is in no way like 3DO.
You lot really do need to read beyond the fact of 'OMG NO1 PLAYS 1 IN DA STREET SO THEY MUST BE FAILINGIN1111'. Half of us are not a bunch of kids and should be able to see further than that. The three main points on why people believe the 3DS are a lack of games, a lack of sales and Nintendo making their first loss in thirty years. None of these mean that the console is going to be a failure and it's a naive way to look on things if you believe that. The 3DS did have a lack of games on Launch, no one can deny this. Launching a console without one of the major first party series games (Mario) was a huge mistake on Nintendo's point. But the whole lack of games theory is flawed, There is now 78 games out for the 3DS, I wouldn't call that a lack of games. Sure some of the games have been terrible such as Steel Diver or Brunswick Pro Bowling but there have also been a few cracking games such as Super Mario 3D Land and Resident Evil. With more games coming out in the next week weeks such as Mario Kart 7, The lack of games is certainly not a problem and sales of such games are not either. People are also saying the 3DS is failing to sell, This is not true. The initial uptake of sales was quite slow, granted but from when Nintendo did the price drop, sales have rocketed. The sales at the start of this month had passed 1.65 million in the US, which is infact beating the DS's original selling amount. Although the DS sold 2.37 million units in the first year, 50% of those sales came at Christmas time, so if we do quick math, the 3DS is looking to do a minimum of 2.475 million units. It's not a big change over the original DS's selling mark but it's still better than the original, which is showing progress among sales. The final reason people are saying the 3DS is going to fail is because Nintendo is going to post a loss for the first time in thirty years. Posting a loss does not mean that the console is not going to work. Everyone knows Nintendo don't sell loss-leading consoles until they decided to do with the 3DS, which yes, is a bold move but has helped sales substantially. If you think of other businesses which routinely post a loss, such as American Airlines and Delta Airlines, They still keep going and do they come out better than before? Yes. Sorry for the essay, but what you guys keep saying about the 3DS failing is just bullshit.

I realize the point you make there but Delta and American have filed for bankruptcy millions of times and still passed through it. I forgot to mention that!
here in italy even with special offers (a 3ds at 169euros) they started selling A FEW just because all the Dses completely disappear from the shelves. until a few week ago people here was skipping the 3ds and still buying old ones even if the difference was just 10 euros! :flamethrower: also i saw literally none playing the 3ds here... and even amongst my friends that are vg players since years, not even one bought a 3ds... sure the market are different, yet i can't see how optimistic many of you are. is it really that successful in the states and japan? or maybe we're just too much close to bankrupt here in europe?
Even though it was announced at E3 apparently the game(at the time at least) wasn't even in full planning stages.
I certainly haven't seen any bargain bin 3DS systems in all my travels this week. THey're still at $169.99 everywhere I go.
