crazy stuff ! why didn't they just call it Ultimate Doom 2 :Fury edition or something like that there is no real need for such a long name ><
Well there has been another update. It sounds like things are on track. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console/posts/308810
Honestly im looking forward to Ouya, despite everything some people have said in this thread. I did not pledge or preorder or anything but i had been thinking about getting an android TV box for a while and decided to wait and see what Ouya would turn out to be. I sure like old school and indie games. Nowadays i dont buy many games from big developpers. I mostly buy indie stuff for PC. ( and used retro games of course ). I do not play the current gen consoles at all.
Another update just now. Funny since I was just thinking the other day that there should be one. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console/posts/339520 ^^^ pictures of the board they say they are still on track for devkits in December at which point I imagine we should start seeing a lot more.
Dude, its 5 months to launch and the board still isn't final? when they plan to start mass producing these things? And I dont like how they talk about JB like if it was a feature, unless they were planning to stick with ICS If they knew what they are doing they would STFU about their "SDK" (its android bro) and release the controller first which is the only part of the project that isnt standard and developers actually need to code for. The games? if it runs on android it runs on ouya, BFD
At the moment they are right where they said they would be. The first consoles expected were to be devkits which they planned to have available in December. (not sure if they have a way to realistically meet the goals they've set.) What's so complicated about a controller. The mock ups look the same as most standard controllers wouldn't devs just be able to map this later?
Not if you want a good controller, and as I said talking about a SDK for a generic phone-in-a-box device is downright stupid, they should focus on the controller, 99.99% of all games will be phone and tablet games but the thing lacks a touchscreen so the controls have to be top notch
New Update http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console/posts/359619 They are planning to ship the Dev units Dec 28th. Still on schedule (or at least the schedule I invented to see if they are on track). How ever it will be a lot more interesting to see the units start to arrive and videos, articles and other info to start popping up. ^^^ Nice to see an actual produced unit (at least case) they mention the controller going out too but imagine they would have taken a picture if it was ready all ready.
IMO They're doing it wrong. 1. They need to change the name, times have changed what with the Wii and all but I still think people prefer to have their consoles sounding meaty. 2. They shouldn't have made it totally open source, they should have confidence in their product as something standalone. They're going to get raped by piracy and the idea of "every game must have some free playability" makes me shudder, it reminds me of so many things; Namely; Shareware of the late 80's early 90's, the Ad based Gizmondo and lastly free games on the Apple/Android stores, stuffed full of adverts or crippled unless you pay for extras. A powerful SDK (and a basic one for kids) with a really good anti piracy model which doesn't totally open up the hardware but gives you access to what you need for great games would have been a better step. I think the lack of licensing required and the opportunity to see your game on a TV are big enough incentives here, backed up with a rock solid distribution model and some guaranteed exposure it'd be a winner. 3. They've missed a trick here, because it appears to have a nice dashboard and every system will be the same, they could have set up a really unique distribution model based on kickstarter itself. Imagine the dashboard having a voting/Kickstarter section where devs can pitch idea's/potential ports and seeing what interest gets generated before they start devving. Lastly they should have taken a big chunk of that cash they got and grabbed a really great exclusive or approached a studio/set of indies to produce something really spectacular to get some more positive buzz going. Or at the very least have a tech demo showing the system pushed to it's limits by a dev who's used tools that aren't out of this world (Unity for example). There's always a win involved when you trick 13 year olds into thinking they can make their own version of Modern Warfare. That said I think for $99 it does look cool though and if I hadn't spent enough money this month already I'd probably take a gamble. I just can't see it working beyond a standard Android box with a controller, they really need to work harder to gain some brand identity. It's too Arty and Apple like. They should have called this the Destructoid 720 or something and just riddled it with games based on guns and sex, I don't think they know who their target market is.
New OUYA Update. Developer Consoles are in the mail. Can't say I'm impressed with the controllers at this point. I'm sure we'll get a lot more thoughts and comments from devs/gamers receiving the boxes soon though. Full Update Here
So with this console I'm guessing that all games bought with your Android phone can be just redownloaded for free on to this box for play on the TV? Maybe worth looking in to if that's the case.
To show the console is working, they show an Ouya text appearing on a TV screen. Uh, how about showing the menu or something like that? Also, "100% open" in the thread title isn't true anymore, according to the developers. (I'm assuming the root button is gone, since it was a really stupid idea if you actually wanna make money off any game)
Well they have an actual product now which is a lot more then many here expected. In fact at this point they are on time with sending out devkits which is very encouraging. The question is if they can get a thriving community going with developers making money and gamers making money. Worst case I'm "stuck" with an emulator/xbmc box. Best case I get some games I actually want to play. (Only time will tell at this point) Oh and you can see the menu in the update (which they state is a very early look and subject to change) Also I imagine we'll start to get some full blown videos when these start to arrive into peoples hands and I imagine the real criticisms will come out then. (and not half ass speculation)
