Osaka and Kyoto are pretty boring, I never found a gamestore by walking. Did have some mediocre food and see a few shrines :) I wanna go down to Fukuoka, perhaps they haven't caught the collector bug.

Fukuoka City (Hakata) is not far from where I live. Only about 1 hour 20 minutes or so by bus. Don't expect to find any game shops in Tenjin, Fukuoka City's main shopping area. THere's nothing ! There is however a massive Sega GIO senter with a massive Taito center over the road. These places are the only places worth visiting in Fukuoka City. I'm sure that there are many good shops in Fukuoka it's self but as far as the main city center goes there's nothing.

Thats sad, I guess in reality, the place to shop really is Akihabara despite the ugly prices. One could waste their trip looking for a small games store. I had an exchange student from Fukuoka some years back, maybe I can get back in touch with him, perhaps he knows some good places :D

Osaka has Nipponbashi, which is along the same lines as Akihabara, and a bit more reasonably priced so I hear. I doubt anyone from a large American city would think Osaka was dirty though. Kyoto's great if you're into temples, but that's about it.

Just like the states, you'll only find the good deals by searching... and lots of it. The thing is, there's SOOOO much ground to cover, even in Tokyo. This is a land that has more retailers and resellers than actualy citizens! (exeagerration, but the number is still ridiculous). I think if you scoured Chiba and Yokohama you might find some good deals, but take that with a grain of salt.

And about the love hotels -- they'll only work for an overnight stay. A rest is about 6000 yen, but a "Stay" will only get you a room until the next morning, for 11,000 or so... you can't leave your luggage their all day either, which is a bummer, and they generally don't let people go in alone, or with someone of the same sex.

I suppose if theres no love in the room, they have nothing to film with those hidden cameras.

  9. So... am I the only one interested in actually seeing parts of Japan rather than just loading up on stuff you could find on eBay, though cheaper? :smt009

I wouldn't mind seeing Japan either, but if I'm going to spend a butload of cash to visit the land of the rising sun, I am going to come home with some souvieners.

Not just games, I'd have to buy a shitload of Godzilla stuff too.

It is not a choice. I will be forced to. I know, I know, I know. It is too late for me, my son.

I also wouldn't mind visiting Tokyo's red light district

Well if people are going to spend a shitload on going to japan they might want to make the trip worth it by buying all the stuff they can find which would cost 1000X on ebay.

Man, that was boring (although, coming from Amsterdam I might be a little spoilt :smt033 ). Just private clubs and drunk bussinessmen, and a temple at the end :smt043
I've got a few pics I'm still planning to upload, if you're interested.

A rather boring answer I suppose but I've got quite a few gay friends. Two of which didnt' speak Japanese nor had their own places to live.

Roppongi is not the Red Light District, although msot white people think so. Kabukicho (especially the back part) is 1000x seedier. Coming from somewhere like Amsterdam anything else is not going to look good. Kabukicho is right next to the business district, and is also surrounded by legitimate businesses and shops. So, most of the stuff is "hidden", although my friend walking through there when I was at work was offered some "service"... this was at 12-noon for God's sake!

Kabukicho is a really nasty place I think. I was walking down there last September and was offered "services" twice within the hour. There are clubs where you can sit and have a woman ride you while you drink. This is no shit either, it's the truth. I know for sure that I couldn't drink a drink while taking part in that service.

I think Kabukicho is actually the only place in Japan where if you piss off the wrong person, you MIGHT actually be in a world of hurt. There are quite a few Yaks there (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) and undesireables all around. On the flip side, there's some cool bars and a one-time very popular club, not to mention some arcades in the Neighborhood, and the Koma and Liquid Room.

Here's my story... running to a club at 5Am in the ball-shrivelling rain. Some guy across the street was yelling, "Blow jobs!" in English. I can only assume he was merely recruting for someone that actually did the deed.

    I'm not that stupid, I meant Kabuki-cho ;-)
The Golden Gai is a bit of a disappointment unless seeing loads of 2m-wide bars gets it up for you :smt042

And I got more "massaji" offers in Ichikawa than anywhere else :smt042
